Now in its second year, the V&A Waterfront Neighbourhood Awards will once again be presenting bespoke pieces of art to celebrate retail excellence among tenants. From ancient laurel wreaths and polished pewter cups to contemporary forms, trophies have always symbolised achievement, identity and shared values. Just like a flag, a trophy is an ideological marker: its design says as much about an era and institution as the achievement it represents. At the V&A Waterfront, this symbolism is reimagined through the annual Neighbourhood Awards, which commissions trophies that are works of art crafted by leading local makers and which are deeply rooted in the precinct’s purpose-led philosophy. ‘The trophy becomes a symbol of shared purpose,’ says Mandla Mkhwebane, Senior Marketing Manager: B2C and CX at the V&A Waterfront. ‘It honours the retailer, but also the creative talent that defines our precinct. It’s recognition with ripple effects.’ In 2024, the V&A Waterfront began this journey by commissioning Diana George of Lerato Design Consultancy to envision a collection of bespoke ceramic trophies made by a group of Cape Town-based creatives: award-winning ceramicist Clementina van der Walt, known for her bold use of colour and pattern; N’Sele Adonis Mumpango, whose hand-engraved lines and textured [...]

If you were asked to identify the world’s most luxurious wines, the cognoscenti among you might cite something suitably French, involving the word “Chateau”. The bottles would be extremely rare, or extremely old, or both. American aficionados would probably look to the Napa Valley’s low-production cult hero Screaming Eagle. But would it surprise you to learn that extremely hand-crafted, limited-edition wines hailing from the ocean-facing slopes of a Stellenbosch estate are also starting to lay claim to the accolade? De Toren Private Cellar is fast cementing its reputation as a global contender. One of the first-ever South African wineries to produce Bordeaux-style wines and make use of a gravity-fed cellar, the estate is renowned for meticulous attention to detail when it comes to nurturing its vineyards to grow the perfect berries, and for making wine through the softest and gentlest of processes. Its spectacular wines have been awarded the honorary titles of South Africa’s Best Bordeaux Blend and South Africa’s Most Luxurious Wine, respectively. De Toren has been ranked as one of the Top 10 Red Wine Producers in South Africa by the South African Wine Index. Further afield, De Toren was twice nominated as New World Winery of the [...]

Design Indaba can’t wait to host perennially restless design engineer Kinya Tagawa at #DI2020. The award-winning founder of design innovation firm Takram works in fields as diverse as software engineering, product design and interactive art, and tackles everything from moon rovers and cars to government data visualisation tools and camera lenses with his multidisciplinary team. His passion for prototyping sees him pushing the boundaries of what is possible – he has spoken about reinventing the design process and has positioned Takram at the forefront of the industry’s evolution. Creative yet practical, his experimental design brings fresh artistry to the engineering discipline. His forward-thinking studio, which has offices in Tokyo, London and New York, is well known for integrating technology into each and every project, whether working on graphic design or product design. The underlying ethos of the business is what Tagawa calls ‘pendulum thinking’ – an ability to navigate any pair of seemingly opposite ways of thinking; design and engineering, thinking and making, abstract and concrete, etc. Tagawa, who graduated from the Department of Mechano-Informatics at the University of Tokyo and also completed an Industrial Design Engineering course at the Royal College of Art in the UK, is becoming well [...]

Seven of Spier’s nine Double Gold winners were white wines: Spier Brut Methodé Cap Classique 2009, two Chenin Blancs (Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2018 and Spier Ideology Chenin Blanc 2019), two Sauvignon Blancs (Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2019 and Spier Ideology Sauvignon Blanc 2019), and both the 2013 and 2019 vintages of Spier Creative Block 2 (a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon). The historic Stellenbosch wine farm and hotel was also a finalist for the Culture and Lifestyle Award. “Our warm, welcoming and attentive staff have worked hard at helping the guest experience at Spier reach new heights – and this award is evidence of that,” says Joep Schoof, Spier’s GM. “We’re enormously proud to receive it and are delighted that our team’s efforts have been recognised with such a prestigious accolade.” The award was presented by the Provincial Minister for Finance and Economic Opportunities, David Maynier. “The Lilizela Tourism Awards recognises and rewards those in the tourism sector who work passionately and with pride to deliver a world class product or experience for visitors to the Western Cape,” explained the minister at the prizegiving. “Every stakeholder in this industry, no matter how small, fulfils an incredibly important role in delivering a culture of service excellence which supports the tourism industry and in turn, grows our economy and creates jobs. They are the everyday heroes in our communities.”

At a gala event held at UJ Gallery on 11 April 2019, emerging Eastern Cape artist Sonwabiso Ngcai was announced as overall winner of 2019 PPC Imaginarium Awards, taking home R150 000 in cash for his sculpture entitled Isigu, or The Snare. A BASA Award-winning programme, the PPC Imaginarium Awards is the country’s most supportive art and design competition with over half-a-million Rand in prizes awarded across six categories – Sculpture, Industrial Design, Film, Fashion, Jewellery and Architecture – to standout entries that express innovation using PPC cement. Ngcai secured both the Sculpture Category prize and the Overall Winner ranking for a thought-provoking entry, which provides an analogy for how certain religious cults are ensnaring their congregants. According to the artist’s personal views on the subject matter: “an isigu, in traditional African society, is a contraption used by young boys to hunt birds. It consists of a downward-facing bowl, with one side held open by an upright stick that has a string tied to it, with a few pieces of grain scattered underneath the bowl. Lured by the promise of food, a bird enters the area – the string is tugged, and the bird is captured. In this piece, the use [...]
