It is resoundingly clear that we need to act in very meaningful ways to address the issues that face us as a nation, and a planet. But we are also drowning in opinions masquerading as facts; not to mention the politics. Enter the fourth annual #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL, a local public event that consciously gathers together a diverse range of people, who may not often or easily come together, to have the difficult and uncomfortable conversations about South Africa’s biggest challenges. Secondly, the festival aims to support South African innovators and entrepreneurs to action their solutions to these issues. This year’s #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL runs from 20 – 23 September 2021, and takes participants on a deep dive into the major fault lines in South Africa – brutally exposed by the impact of COVID-19 – in order to stimulate ideas and action that result in inclusion and change. Private sector businesses, communities, designers, thinkers, do-ers, visionaries and policy makers from across the country and beyond are invited to participate in this collaborative public event. The “unconference” style of this year’s festival allows for small physical gatherings and site visits, online conversations, and facilitated design thinking sprints, all aimed at supporting local innovators [...]

Despite the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic and other shocks to our economy, there are green shoots of growth in some sectors – this includes, for example, small businesses who have focussed on ecommerce and digital services. Capitalising on and funding this growth potential will be key to rebuilding the local economy. With this in mind, the CDI Capital Growth Fund has opened for grant funding applications. Small businesses that are experiencing growth or are poised for expansion in any sector and can create jobs are encouraged to apply. CDI Capital is a niche emerging impact funder, and subsidiary of the Craft + Design Institute (CDI) non-profit, which has a 20-year track record of success in supporting small businesses in South Africa. As an impact funder, CDI Capital is committed to creating positive social and economic impact in the SMME sector and the South African economy. From 2012 -2015, CDI Capital Growth Fund created 464 jobs in 45 businesses with participating businesses growing their combined annual revenue by 73% – exceeding the fund’s initial targets. The current round of funding, supported by the National Treasury’s Jobs Fund, aims to support up to 60 businesses to create 600 new jobs by 31 [...]

Many businesses are reverting to pre-lockdown levels of activity, while others still are seeking new entrepreneurial avenues to supplement existing incomes or replace those lost due to the Coronavirus crisis. A must-read for entrepreneurs and new business owners to aid this return and stimulate new economic activity is the debut book by Catherine Wijnberg, entitled Sheep Will Never Rule The World. Launched officially on 13 August 2020, the book is a collection of wisdoms from the pen of this successful entrepreneur, who is the founder and CEO of SME growth specialists, Fetola. Here are just a few of the insights Wijnberg offers to assist entrepreneurs: Follow your passion According to Wijnberg: “As entrepreneurs, we have the choice to make the world what we want it to be. So be grateful for that choice – and find a way for your passion and your work to align.” Understand the market Identify if there’s not only a gap in the market but “a market in [...]

South Africa, like the rest of the world, has entered into a Coronavirus lockdown, yet the measures taken in our country have severely shocked the economy. With recovery tipped to be slow, this can be dispiriting, especially for businesses that have already been adversely impacted. Yet there are ways to mitigate this. Catherine Wijnberg, the founder of Fetola, a national leader in the business growth sector, specialises in assisting SMEs with their growth trajectory. Lean startup and turnaround strategies are her specialty. Wijnberg is convinced that there is an opportunity in every challenge. She should know: she has experience in starting, growing and operating businesses in five different sectors across three countries. In 2006, she started Fetola with the aim of transforming the local SME sector. “It’s simple really,” explains Wijnberg, “we build businesses that last.” This has become even more critical for South Africa now, in the light of post-lockdown economic realities. The expert insights in this book have inspired the entrepreneurs on Wijnberg’s business programmes to reach their full potential. Fetola runs Enterprise Development programmes for clients such as SAB Foundation, FNB, Sappi, Old Mutual and the EU.
Cape Town-based Catherine Wijnberg is a successful entrepreneur with experience in starting, growing and operating businesses in five different sectors across three countries. She was born in Ndola, Zambia to an entrepreneurial father. The fourth of five children she travelled from an early age to the UK for boarding school and studied agriculture in Scotland and Australia. Catherine started her working life as an agricultural economist at the Zambia Farmers Union. Her first entrepreneurial venture was a leap of faith into the new forex auction system in Zambia and an import business serving the local farming network. The move to South Africa sparked a range of business ventures including import-export, farming, transportation, an apartment hotel, recruitment, metaphysical healing and architectural software before starting Fetola in 2006. She founded Fetola with a vision to contribute to the transformation of the South African economy by growing the small business sector. For it is here that jobs are created, success is cultivated, and women, youth, and rural communities can create self-empowered futures. She was also determined that one woman could make a difference and empower other women to do so, too. Fetola has grown rapidly, from a small consultancy into a recognised SME [...]
