Experience Cécile & Boyd’s liveability and devotion to comfort at its two signature shops, which are located on fashionable Florida Road, Durban, and Kloof Nek Road, Cape Town, respectively. Both embody the ethos that company founders Cécile Tilley and Boyd Ferguson have instilled in these landmark retail destinations – the ‘high art of living well’ right here in South Africa. Tilley and Ferguson established their first progressive retail space in Durban 30 years ago – back when stores were typically functional rather than homely. Although not uncommon today, the concept of styling spaces as if they were real lived-in rooms is something Cécile & Boyd pioneered at a time when no-one else was doing it. This understanding of what resonates with people is what continues to set them apart and has made the company the industry leader it is today. Established in a turn-of-the-century house, the Durban shop is deftly curated and generously stocked with Cécile & Boyd’s trademark furniture, art and décor pieces. You can’t help but linger and prolong your shopping experience – usually over a cup of coffee or tea. The success of the Durban shop is what led to the introduction of Cécile & Boyd’s interior [...]

Five of Singita’s luxury lodges have been named among the best in Africa, in Condé Nast Traveller (UK & USA) Readers’ Choice Awards – proving that quality design is a distinguishing feature of high-end resorts. The luxury safari market remains competitive, despite wobbles in the global economy. Valued at USD 1184.6m in 2018, it’s a thriving market in which unflagging demand for purposeful safari experiences is driving an increase in tourist numbers. But monied travellers are increasingly looking for “experiences, privacy, and unique memories all bundled into one bespoke package”, according to Forbes magazine, which drives lodges and camps to offer much more than just spectacular sunsets. How, then, can properties gain a competitive advantage in this market, with new high-end lodges unveiled every year and visitors continually looking for the next thrilling adventure? Broadening the scope of guest activities is certainly an option (walking with wildlife and stargazing have been popular, along with particular conservation projects) – but that doesn’t guarantee an increase in the number of visitors, or indeed lead to customer retention. There is, however, evidence to suggest that quality accommodation and inspiring design, together with sustainable ecotourism (that is, making a difference), are driving tourists to [...]

Cécile celebrates the life and work of Cécile Tilley, a design doyenne, style icon and the founder and ongoing inspiration behind renowned interior design studio and retail company, Cécile & Boyd. Cécile & Boyd is internationally respected for their award-winning hospitality design for Singita as well as various high-level residential projects around the world – not to mention astonishingly layered and visually captivating stores located in Durban, Cape Town and online. A South African powerhouse that has successfully redefined the experience of luxury, they have set new standards for the globe. Timed to coincide with the celebration of the company’s 30th anniversary, Cécile is a tribute to the woman behind the name, whose inimitable courage, creative instincts and inherent charisma inspired all those who crossed paths with her. The memoir has been painstakingly and lovingly put together on behalf of Cécile & Boyd by creative duo Kerryn Fischer and Luanne Toms, with beautiful visuals ranging from archival family snaps to photographs from some of Cécile & Boyd’s early projects. Although Cécile passed away in 2014, her energy still informs the company’s aesthetic and attitude today. The book honours the considerable contribution she made to the interior design landscape of South [...]
