The much-awaited first JW Marriott in Charlotte, North Carolina celebrated its grand opening on 18 August 2021. The upscale hotel is described as an urban luxury retreat, and boasts an impressive rooftop bar and pool, oyster bar, Spa by JW, an authentic restaurant, and luxurious well-appointed rooms. However, there is one standout feature that truly lights up the hotel – a strikingly exquisite chandelier adorns the welcome lobby. This custom chandelier is monumental; the one-of-a-kind piece requires an impressive 26 cubic meters of hanging space and weighs over a tonne. Though it now hangs magnificently over a curving staircase in the hotel’s lobby area, it originated on the other side of the Atlantic! This lighting piece journeyed all the way from Cape Town, where it was created by leading South African-based lighting company, willowlamp to take its place as the talking point of this leading hotel. willowlamp’s award-winning founder and Creative Director Adam Hoets was commissioned by Fabiola Troncoso, an Associate at Chicago’s Simeone Deary Design Group, on behalf of Marriott International in 2018. This was not Hoets’s first commission from the Simeone Deary Design Group – in 2014, the US design firm commissioned willowlamp’s Flower of Life chandeliers for [...]

Murano glass chandeliers imported from Italy have long been the lighting design of choice for upscale residences in Kuwait. But a desire to illuminate an interior with an original pendant piece that breaks away from the market norm, has led a Kuwaiti homeowner to look further than the traditional chandeliers available locally. The solution was to import a custom-made willowlamp from South Africa that in itself is a piece of art. Taking inspiration from nature, willowlamp’s organic aesthetic provides a refreshing contrast to more classic chandeliers and thus paves the way for a new contemporary style of lighting in Kuwait. After seeing an image of willowlamp’s Mandala chandelier installed in Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Suites hotel, the client was struck by the technical skill demonstrated by the Cape-Town based design company to produce multi-dimensional geometric patterns using chains alone. He then approached willowlamp to design a version of this piece for his own home. Once presented with willowlamp’s design concept from, the client found it was indeed the fresh perspective he had been searching for. “I always focus on creating a modern house with as much of an Art Deco feel as possible. This piece was exactly what I needed. The [...]

willowlamp Founder and Creative Director Adam Hoets draws ideas for new designs from all forms and media; enter The WindChime from the 2018 collection. The WindChime concept came to life after Adam watched a film about ninjas. Hoets says the design was one of the fastest-completed that he has ever created. “It took me less than three days. Sometimes I sit on ideas for years, and sometimes they just appear in an instant.” The creative process varies greatly, as do the many different moments that can take an idea to the next level. While Hoets cannot recall the title of the film, one scene in particular made quite an impression, showing an elongated light made of tiered bamboo windchimes, mimicking the shape of the traditional instrument. “I’ve always liked these forms and thought it would be interesting to interpret windchimes in a classic chandelier design.” The WindChime is one of two new chandeliers among the larger statement pieces in this collection, while at least half of the remaining 2018 lights are smaller designs with consideration given to more compact spaces. The WindChime represents what willowlamp has become known for – large, show-stopping pieces that pack a punch. All willowlamp creations [...]

Forming part of award-winning lighting design company willowlamp’s expanding collection of exquisite pendants and chandeliers, the Love Clover range is a suite of charming yet elegant hanging lights that pay homage to the botanical beauty and keepsake; the four-leaf clover. Each of the four distinctive designs in the new range conveys the serendipitous feelings associated with finding a four-leaf clover. According to willowlamp’s Founder and Creative Director, Adam Hoets, the Love Clover range was inspired by a run in the mountain where he and his fiancé [now his wife] happened across fields of clovers. “Since that day, she encouraged me to use the shape of the four-leaf clover in my work.” Baby Love Initially, only one lighting design bearing this distinctive motif was planned, but then Hoets decided to expand the range to three pendants and one chandelier. The challenge came in when trying to capture the sense of joy that is associated with clovers, while still creating sophisticated designs. “As cute and cheerful as four-leaf clovers are, it took me a long time to translate them into three-dimensional objects that were interesting,” Hoets says. “Eventually, through trial and error, the solution presented itself in what is now a four-piece [...]

Award-winning South African lighting design company willowlamp has created its most impressive art chandeliers to date for the new Crown Perth Hotel in Perth, Australia. Willowlamp’s Creative Director and Founder, Adam Hoets, was commissioned by Australian-based architectural firm, Bates Smart, to design a bespoke series of four chandeliers to be featured in the lobby of the hotel. These astounding pieces, each weighing three tonnes, was unveiled for the first time on 15 December 2016. The project posed a new challenge to Hoets with the design and installation of four clusters on a seven-metre high ceiling, and the pieces being the largest willowlamp has created and installed to date. The solution was found by breaking the clusters into modules, with hidden dropped tiers in each cluster to reduce the overall weight of the chandeliers. Each cluster of the design encompasses approximately 20 000m of ball chain, lending each considerable weight. Illumination for these striking pieces comes from 150 LED G9 lamps per cluster. The result is not not only a technical triumph, it is aesthetically breathtaking, too. The Crown Perth chandeliers are a customised variation of an existing willowlamp design, the Mandala No.1 that is inspired by sacred geometric patterns. The new [...]

Award-winning South African lighting company, willowlamp has launched two new art chandeliers, the Spiralling Tree and its related design, the Double Spiralling Tree. The Double Spiralling Tree had its official debut at a recent trade show 100% Design South Africa, held from 5-9 August 2016. The Spiralling Tree, is set to showcase for the first time at Maison & Objet, Paris in September 2016. These two chandeliers are the latest additions to the willowlamp collection, which includes pieces such as the Spiral Nebula and Enchanted Faraway Tree. The Spiralling Tree and Double Spiralling Tree are two versions of the same initial concept – a winding tree branch with leaf canopies that cascade around its circumference. The body or “branch” consists of a steel frame, while the “canopies” are made out of elegant drops of chain. The weight of the chain causes the branch to collapse downwards and inwards forming the elegant spiral shape for which the chandeliers are named. These two new designs were both inspired by the Enchanted Faraway Tree chandelier, which has counterbalancing branches at multiple levels. However, the two new designs take their original concept a step further. The entire body is one continuous piece instead of [...]
