A ground-breaking health educational campaign aimed at raising awareness of stroke symptoms is being rolled out globally – with a Grand Mission to recruit one million children from across the world to help save their Grandparents. The award-winning FAST Heroes campaign seeks to use children between the ages of 5 and 9 years of age as the catalyst to help improve recognition of the signs of stroke, as well as increasing understanding about the need for speedy action when stroke strikes. The campaign will leverage children’s amazing enthusiasm for learning and sharing, encouraging the spread of knowledge to the rest of their family, particularly to their grandparents. The educational resources are fun, engaging and interactive, teaching youngsters about empathy and love, as well as providing practical life-saving skills. Children are empowered with tools with which they can fulfil their mission of educating their grandparents. Sheila Martins, Neurology Professor and President elect of the World Stroke Organization, who endorse the FAST Heroes campaign, said: “One in four of us will have a stroke in our lifetime, so it is a prominent issue that touches all of us. Worldwide, stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause [...]

The town of Stellenbosch gears up to host an extraordinary series of events, next year, when the first Stellenbosch Triennale will play host to some of the world’s most sought after artists responding to the complex present, historical realities and future possibilities. The Stellenbosch Triennale, brainchild of the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust, will take place from 11 February to 30 April in 2020. Venues across the town will exhibit works in response to the theme of the Triennale Tomorrow There Will Be More of Us. In addition to artworks by practitioners of contemporary art from Africa, the Triennale will also provide a unique learning opportunity for all in its vicinity. Known as The Imaginarium, the carefully engineered platform will be a supplementary, online, open source (i.e. free) discovery and learning resource centre for all ages. This exciting experience will be accessed through the Triennale website, and will be designed to stimulate the imagination while supporting 21st Century learning skills. Prior to the launch of the Stellenbosch Triennale online content, workshops which put this theory into practice have already begun. Workshops and lessons are being held at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography. Here, Grade 5’s from Devon Valley Primary [...]

You needn’t leave the kids at home when visiting this year’s Investec Cape Town Art Fair at the CTICC from 14-16 February 2020, as stimulating creative activities await the young – and the young at heart – at Lalela’s exhibition presence at the fair. The non-profit arts education programme for at-risk youth will be exhibiting artworks created by Lalela learners as well as hosting Kids-4-Kids Tours, in addition to mounting an Interactive White Wall which invites all visitors to make their mark… This year, Lalela will show off a range of inspiring artworks created by youth at-risk who participate in Lalela’s arts education programme. Selected pieces will be exhibited on the walls of Lalela’s stand and are available for purchase, with the proceeds going towards funding the NPO. What’s more, Lalela will coordinate Kids-4-Kids Tours taking place on 14 and 15 February 2020. As the name suggests, these are curated tours of the fair aimed at fellow school pupils, coordinated and undertaken by Lalela learners themselves. The Kids-4-Kids Tour Guides are chosen from Lalela’s Grade 11 and 12 learners at Silikamva and Hout Bay High Schools, and they will be assisted by Lalela alumni. Tour groups – which ideally cater [...]

Apparel with purpose – this is the raison d’être behind The Lalela Scarf, an international luxury fashion brand that exclusively supports Lalela, a non-profit arts education programme for at-risk youth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The gorgeous designs that give The Lalela Scarf such vibrant appeal have been created using Lalela learners’ original artworks. It is a sustainable cycle of life-changing art. New York-based Creative Director Sandy Tabatznik curates each seasonal collection of scarves by drawing on stand-out paintings and then adapting their format. “Lalela provides educational arts to at-risk youth to spark creative thinking and awaken the entrepreneurial spirit,” she explains. The organization teaches children how to map and manifest their dreams and goals, launching the possibility of a different future for themselves and their communities. From grade 1 to grade 12, Lalela connects arts to everything important in a child’s life, from core academics to critical life skills. Research shows that arts education improves the lives of students, increasing their academic, social, mental and economic wellbeing over a long-term period. Furthermore, arts education is a key indicator of success in life and academics. The Lalela Scarf was first conceived as a means of funding Lalela but has grown into a standalone luxury [...]

With a lineage of great entrepreneurs, innovators and winemakers, it’s no wonder that Fairview constantly finds itself at the forefront of the wine and cheese industry. Now, 35 years after its famous Goat Tower was first built, this is still the case, with the introduction of a new landmark attraction – South Africa’s first skywalk and activity playpark for goats. “They constantly innovate every single aspect of the customer experience, which has led to their success,” says international wine tourism consultant, Peter McAtamney, an international guest speaker at the recent The Business of Wine and Food Tourism Conference held in Cape Town in November 2016. McAtamney, founder of Wine Business Solutions, an Australian firm that provides performance improvement solutions to the wine industry, ranks Fairview as the leading visitor experience in the world: “In my experience and from the numbers we see through benchmarking of wineries across Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States, there is no more commercially successful cellar door than Fairview.” McAtamney’s statement is supported by Fairtrade-accredited wines that have pioneered new varieties in South Africa, exceptional cheese (Fairview recently received a prestigious gold rating for its Chèvre Roue Goats Milk Cheese at the 2016 [...]

“We have been thinking about these new animals for a couple of years.” Says Jay Osgerby about Barber & Osgerby’s latest children’s designs for The Rug Company. “The animals in question need to have sufficient characteristics to make them distinctive. It is a challenge to make the man-eating creatures – just real enough without scaring the living daylights out of the household.” Comprising four new animal designs, Peacock, Croco, Tiger and Frog, the collection is designed to be loved as much by parents as their children. The cheerful designs are versatile and enduring, seeing its owner through the years from childhood into adulthood. As to be expected of the designers of the Olympic Torch, the rugs have been painstakingly designed, with careful attention to every detail and shade of colour. “The compositions are very important to us. We have often cropped the creature to give a sense of movement or to add to the humour of the piece.” Each rug has been woven by hand using traditional techniques for which The Rug Company is renowned. These age-old methods of production ensure that the rug will last a lifetime or longer. Frog will be available from the end [...]
