Walter Train – Peke Boo Screen The search for the country’s hottest screen designs is nearing completion as Nando’s HYD announces its top five finalists for 2024. Kirsty Moolman, Tanisha Neill, Simphiwe Mlambo, Mpumelelo Nyuswa and Walter Train will now participate in an intensive ‘Laboratory of Learning’ before one stand-out candidate is selected to receive ongoing mentorship and business coaching. Facilitated by Clout/SA, the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search is a bi-annual staple on South Africa’s design calendar. This time around, entrants were invited to answer a ‘Screen Dream’ brief to create a screen or room divider that is not only relevant and functional, but also decorative and distinct, adding to the overall ambiance of a Nando’s restaurant. Tanisha Neill Entries closed in June 2024 and just fewer than 200 emerging designers from across the country submitted screen designs for initial consideration. A shortlist of 10 promising designer-makers was selected at the beginning of August 2024, namely, Nicky van den Aardweg, Josh and Pia McFindlay, Margo Kritzinger, Annabelle Brown, Sarafina Maluleka and the aforementioned five finalists. All were invited to a one-day immersion at Nando’s Central Kitchen in Lorentzville, Johannesburg, on Friday 6 September 2024. ‘The HYD programme [...]

Along the edge of the Indian Ocean, on a strip better known as the Sunshine Coast – roughly halfway between Port Alfred and East London – sits the idyllic seaside village of Hamburg. Be it the rolling hills blanketed by indigenous vegetation that define the drive to Hamburg, or the birdlife in the area, or the Keiskamma River estuary that welcomes you into the village, the area is arguably one of the most beautiful parts of the Eastern Cape. It is also home to the multi-award-winning Keiskamma Art Project (KAP), which was founded in 2000 by Dr Carol Hofmeyer. Over the past two decades and four years of its existence, the project has produced major embroidered textile artworks, made by the women and men of Hamburg, sharing their stories and experiences, as well as bringing to visual life the oral history tradition of the Eastern Cape. Now, for the first time since its founding, three artists from the project, namely Anelisa Nyongo, NozibeleNxadi and project director Cebo Mvubu, have lent their skills and their particular aesthetic to a design collection facilitated by Clout/SA, a purpose-driven creative agency and business-to-business market maker that facilitates opportunities for collaboration between designer-makers and corporate [...]

For the foreseeable future, social distancing will remain on the menu for the restaurant trade. The challenge this presents for sit-down establishments who want to create superlative experiences for diners while adhering to health and safety regulations, calls for innovative thinking. Nando’s Design Programme Creative Director and the founder of Studio Lee Lynch, Tracy Lynch perceived that social distancing requirements presented an opportunity to engage with designers to find solutions. So, at the start of the global Coronavirus lockdowns in 2020, she started working on a series of screens and furniture accessories that would not only serve to make social distancing a bit more intuitive, but would also provide as enriching an aesthetic experience as possible. These designs were included in the Nando’s Portal to Africa – https://bepartofmore.com/public/products – and made available to purchase by over 2 500 Nando’s restaurants across the globe. Over the past five years, together with Nando’s Property Director, Michael Spinks, and with the full support of Nando’s, Lynch and her team developed the Portal to Africa as an online marketplace that connects South African designer-makers to interior designers working on Nando’s restaurants around the world. Thus far, the project has been incredibly well received in the [...]

June 2021 will mark the official launch of Clout SA, a purpose-first enterprise, creative agency, and business-to-business (B2B) market-maker for South African design, which states among its goals the promotion of South Africa’s creativity, craftsmanship, heritage, and creating opportunities for collaboration between designers and makers. While many members of the public will be finding out about Clout SA for the first time, the agency’s team has been hard at work building up to this moment for nearly seven years. Much of that work was done on Clout SA’s founding project, the Nando’s Design Programme and eventually, the Nando’s Portal to Africa, an online shopping platform for designer furniture that has facilitated more than R60 million worth of sales across 20,900 products since it was launched in 2018, making it one of the country’s largest exporters of South African design. There are approximately 1 200 Nando’s restaurants located across the globe from Washington DC to Dhaka, and each space showcases bold, bespoke furniture items which are procured through the Portal to Africa. As part of the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout SA has developed and facilitated one of South Africa’s top biennial design competitions, the Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search, which [...]
