As a leading market-maker and proponent of local design, it comes as no surprise that Clout/SA is bringing the very best of South African talent to 100% Design Africa, which takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 3-6 August 2023. Clout/SA will present three different exhibition stands, all curated by creative director Tracy Lynch: The Nando’s HYD showcase, a display of decor items by the Keiskamma Art Project X Clout/SA, and the SOL Design Collection. The 2022 Nando’s HYD winners exhibition showcases the works of Kalki Ceramics, a Durban-based design studio headed by co-founders Nindya Bucktowar and Nikhil Tricam. Kalki Ceramics specialises in bespoke handcrafted ceramic tiles, looking to South African flora and natural landscapes for inspiration. Tricam and Bucktowar were named the overall winners of the 2022 edition of the talent search competition, which called on designers from across South Africa to conceptualise a condiment unit to display the acclaimed peri-peri sauces available in Nando’s. The duo’s server was chosen from over 120 entries by a prestigious panel of 17 local and global industry judges. As part of their prize, their concept design was subsequently brought to life with their signature handmade ceramic tiles, thanks to support from [...]

Come 28 October 2021, and for one trailblazing day only, some of South Africa’s brightest young design talents will gather at Johannesburg’s historic Constitution Hill for the Nando’s Design Conference. The conference forms part of programme for Day One of the three-day Basha Uhuru Creative Uprising Festival, and will feature a combination of workshops, talks, and an exhibition of selected furniture and lighting pieces. Joburg audiences will be privy to stunning new prototypes of pieces designed by the Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search (HYD) 2020 finalists. These pieces have come to Gauteng after having been exhibited for the very first time as part of Right Here, Right Now!. This South African art and design exhibition was held in June 2021 in Cape Town, and marked the public launch of Clout/SA. Among the inspiring pieces on show at Constitution Hill will be benches by HYD winner Katlego Tshuma, and fellow finalists Christian Botha, Siviwe Jali, Anele Vezi, as well as a server design by Sipho Twala. Twala’s innovative Gimba server was “inspired by the Swati tradition. When I was designing it, I didn’t want to go for the regular rectangular shape, like a cabinet with four legs and all that, [...]

Clout/SA was officially launched to the local and international market in the last week of June 2021. Clout/SA is a purpose-first enterprise, creative agency, and business-to-business (B2B) market-maker for South African design. The aim is to promote South Africa’s creativity, craftsmanship and heritage. Additionally, creating opportunities for collaboration between corporates and designers is a main driver. Clout/SA’s founding project and one of its ongoing directives is the Nando’s Design Programme. As part of the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout/SA developed and facilitated one of South Africa’s top biennial design competitions, the Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search. This competition has launched and supported local design careers, including that of Mash T. design’s Thabiso Mjo, one of the first winners of the competition in 2016. Mjo has described the competition as having “changed the trajectory of my entire life”. In 2020, she went on to make history when she became the first South African designer ever to have her work placed in the permanent collection of the Louvre’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France. Clout/SA’s work on the Nando’s Design Programme led to the development and launch of the Nando’s Portal to Africa in 2018. The portal is an online shopping [...]

Tell us a little about yourself? I am a Durban-based interior designer with a love for travel and diverse cultures. Growing up in Durban, I was fortunate enough to be constantly exposed to different cultures and people. I also have a passion for history and architecture; I feel that there is so much to be learnt from the past when proceeding into the future. What are your plans and aspirations for the future? In the future, I hope to continue to represent South African interior design and inspire people through my work. I particularly enjoy working on hospitality projects and hope to get to a point in my career where I get the opportunity to design interiors and manufacture furniture more frequently within this sector. I also hope to continue designing furniture, create fresh conceptual ideas, and find creative ways for material usage. What impact do you hope to have in the world of design? I hope to show other young women that this industry can drive women’s success and recognition on a local and international level. I also hope to educate people on what our industry is actually about because there is a misconception that interior designers [...]

Hot off the press! Clout / A heartfelt celebration of South African design is a gorgeously curated design compendium sharing the collaboration between Nando’s design programme, Clout, and established and emerging creatives. South African design is thriving as never before – in part due to the support of Nando’s notable design programme, Clout, which showcases a host of creatives on its various platforms. The global restaurant giant is one of the biggest exporters of local design – its support for the industry extends to its Hot Young Designer competition, the print magazine Clout, and the online catalogue and purchasing platform Portal to Africa, which has facilitated more than R34m worth of design sales to date. In July last year, it spearheaded Nando’s Business Development Support Initiative to support design businesses. “As a business in South Africa, we are mindful of the need to create employment opportunities for young people as well as offer ongoing hands-on support to SMEs,” says Michael Spinks, Nando’s property and development director. “We are proud to boost the design sector by facilitating exposure to global opportunities.” To enhance its print oeuvre, Clout has brought out a gorgeously curated design compendium of the work and big [...]
