Never before have our homes – their atmosphere, aesthetic and ambience – been so important. With people spending more time within their four walls than ever before, the need to feel good in general has become essential. Plascon, with its finger on the pulse and its ear to the ground, has looked at both this global imperative to “nest” as well as the need for something to look forward to. This, in combination with the overall generosity of spirit and outpouring of empathy that bubbled up in 2020, is what paved the way for choosing 2021’s Favourite Hue. Cue Plascon Golden Syrup (Y2-B1-2), a warm, sunny yellow that encapsulates positivity, confidence and joy. An embracing tone, Plascon Golden Syrup (Y2-B1-2) has the power to instantly uplift, nurture and illuminate (both literally and figuratively). Embodying optimism, it’s a feel-good hug in a paint tin. As a rich and neutral yellow, Plascon Golden Syrup (Y2-B1-2) is easily adaptable to many types of palettes and works beautifully with an unlimited range of design styles. Plascon Golden Syrup (Y2-B1-2) is tintable in all of Plascon’s premium products. Plascon Velvaglo is great for use in your kitchen or bathroom, where the satin sheen finish of this premium enamel will give your walls a rich lustre. It’s formulated for use [...]

In this time of social, informational and emotional overload, the world sees a rise in the search for wellness and other self-preservation tactics. We are burnt out from the pressure, fear, anxiety and constant sense of uncertainty. People yearn for community, connection and peace. Colour has the ability to fulfill some of these longings. Spring is here and Plascon guides you in the search for renewal and solace. The Plascon Colour Advice team’s newest palette, Gentle Serenity, is a modern and fresh interpretation of chalky pastels with gender-neutral appeal. Gentle Serenity showcases moods and moments which embrace imperfection in order to generate happiness, wellness and contentment. Mermaid Jewel, Oak Forest, Stormy Day The cooler tones in the Gentle Serenity palette bring peace and the tranquillity of an oasis to your space. “We have selected fresher tones of blues and greens to modernise the pastel palette concept. Ask a child and they will tell you: ‘Yellow is the colour of sunshine’. We believe the soft yellows and neutrals we have selected epitomize warmth, happiness and joy. Pinks and lavenders are no longer “girly” colours and these warm hues bring healing, comfort and security”, says Nozipho Kunene, who leads Plascon’s Colour [...]

The winner of the annual Plascon Colour Design Awards was officially announced at 100% Design South Africa, held at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 5 to 9 August 2016. This year’s competition was aimed exclusively at South African students of architecture and interior design. Top honours went to Shani Bijleveld, a first year student from Design Time School of Interior Design in Cape Town. Second and third place went to Athena Strates and Janine De Bruin respectively, who are also students at Design Time. Powered by South Africa’s leading coatings company, the Plascon Colour Design Awards, celebrate colour, design and creativity. Under the theme #colourcan, the brief for this year’s competition was to create a design that would uplift an existing school or educational institution building using Plascon’s Inspired Colour range. Bijleveld chose Oranjekloof Moravian Primary School in Hout Bay, Cape Town, as a canvas for her entry. Her winning design incorporated bold shades of orange and blue including Atlantic Beach B5-B1-1, Plascon’s Colour of the Year for 2016. The vibrant complementary colours were used in patterns inspired by Xhosa beadwork, thereby acknowledging the cultural heritage of the majority of learners at the school. “The Plascon Colour Design Awards [...]

Nurturing future stars and growing the design industry lies at the heart of the ethos behind 100% Design South Africa, which takes place from 6 to 10 August 2015 at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, alongside Decorex Joburg. South Africa’s only international design show, 100% Design South Africa, in conjunction with headline sponsor Dauphin HumanDesign® Group, promises to enthrall visitors with its superbly curated displays and a lineup that comprises top global design brands alongside local design stars. In addition to the established South African names and international design luminaries participating at this leading design show, some of the country’s brightest young talents are given a platform to showcase their work. Each year the curators, Creative Director Laurence Brick and Programme Director Cathy O’Clery, choose a designer whom they see as a future design leader. Last year it was Cape Town-based surface designer and artist Atang Tshikare, a self-developed multidisciplinary artist whose work combines line drawing and street art, working across mediums from pencil and marker to acrylic and aerosol. This year’s featured designer is Renée Rossouw, a recently graduated architect who is already making an impact on the design scene with her bold, colourful graphic patterns applied to a [...]

“We have been thinking about these new animals for a couple of years.” Says Jay Osgerby about Barber & Osgerby’s latest children’s designs for The Rug Company. “The animals in question need to have sufficient characteristics to make them distinctive. It is a challenge to make the man-eating creatures – just real enough without scaring the living daylights out of the household.” Comprising four new animal designs, Peacock, Croco, Tiger and Frog, the collection is designed to be loved as much by parents as their children. The cheerful designs are versatile and enduring, seeing its owner through the years from childhood into adulthood. As to be expected of the designers of the Olympic Torch, the rugs have been painstakingly designed, with careful attention to every detail and shade of colour. “The compositions are very important to us. We have often cropped the creature to give a sense of movement or to add to the humour of the piece.” Each rug has been woven by hand using traditional techniques for which The Rug Company is renowned. These age-old methods of production ensure that the rug will last a lifetime or longer. Frog will be available from the end [...]
