The Stellenbosch Triennale, happening in venues across the historic town from 11 February to 30 April 2020, draws in the continent’s important curators to present programmes interlocking with and at many levels of artistic achievement. On The Cusp is not just an exhibition of emergent artistic or related practices, but presents the work of a number of exciting new artists within the larger Stellenbosch Triennale. Conceptually, On The Cusp references the idea of the accumulated potential that an individual or generation possesses at a crucial interval of time – just before the onset of something great. The exhibition is one of the Triennale’s identifying exhibitions – a core part of the programme, initiated by Chief Curator Khanyisile Mbongwa. Curated by contemporary Ghanaian curator, artist and writer Bernard Akoi-Jackson, On The Cusp takes into account future possibilities by engaging with new artists set to innovate in the African scene to come, as well as on the world stage. The exhibition follows the ethos of the Triennale as it ventures beyond the confines of the traditional, exposing fresh practices — aesthetic, conceptual, critical or material. Akoi-Jackson has upon the advice of a network of colleague practitioners across the continent, selected ten African [...]

Hot off the press! Clout / A heartfelt celebration of South African design is a gorgeously curated design compendium sharing the collaboration between Nando’s design programme, Clout, and established and emerging creatives. South African design is thriving as never before – in part due to the support of Nando’s notable design programme, Clout, which showcases a host of creatives on its various platforms. The global restaurant giant is one of the biggest exporters of local design – its support for the industry extends to its Hot Young Designer competition, the print magazine Clout, and the online catalogue and purchasing platform Portal to Africa, which has facilitated more than R34m worth of design sales to date. In July last year, it spearheaded Nando’s Business Development Support Initiative to support design businesses. “As a business in South Africa, we are mindful of the need to create employment opportunities for young people as well as offer ongoing hands-on support to SMEs,” says Michael Spinks, Nando’s property and development director. “We are proud to boost the design sector by facilitating exposure to global opportunities.” To enhance its print oeuvre, Clout has brought out a gorgeously curated design compendium of the work and big [...]

Artworks made in the multiple are at the centre of three inter-related events at Open Design Cape Town, hosted by EDITIONS Cape Town at Cape Town City Hall. To kick off Open Design on Thursday 13 August, Katherine Bull and Warren Editions performed, Lessons in Transformation The Speech. This site-specific performance was dedicated to the occasion of Nelson Mandela’s first public speech, made on the veranda of City Hall on 11 February 1990 – the day of his release from prison. Bull interprets by means of engraving onto perspex the projecting moving image of Mandela’s speech. The artist distills the moving image into the four process colours – yellow, magenta, cyan and black. These become the matrices for a colour combination print. Printing took place by Warren Editions while Bull engraved the matrices, bringing together a partnership of mark-making and the impression of these marks in ink on substrate. The performance spread out in two rooms – one dedicated to a satellite studio space for Warren Editions. The imprint of the matrices over one another blends the four process colours into a full chroma of the moving image interpreted by Bull. Occurring alongside, the exhibition HOST is organised [...]
