AAAA, a co-operation of artisans from Mali, is launching a pop-up exhibition of contemporary African designs based on traditional techniques in collaboration with Cécile & Boyd. The display will run at Cécile & Boyd’s landmark Kloof Nek Road destination in Cape Town, presenting an opportunity for local interior designers, decorators and art lovers to experience leading decorative homeware from the continent. The pop-up will open to the public from 26 February 2020 onwards and will run for two weeks. AAAA and Cecile & Boyd will present a concise collection of handcrafted Textile Totems that will be showcased to the South African market for the first time. Playing on a love of symbolism and design, AAAA stands for Atelier Autodidacts Anti-Algorithms. The co-op aims to celebrate traditional artisanal methods, which includes championing the original Malian textile artform of Bogolan. Bogolan (which means made of mud) is a traditional handmade Malian cotton fabric (called finimugu) that is dyed with fermented mud. AAAA incorporates Bogolan, also known as Bògòlanfini, into their designs and textures, and it is some of these works that will be shown in Cape Town. Visitors can expect to see an edited selection of striking Textile Totems in eight distinct [...]

Debbie Millman’s name is synonymous with brands – she’s worked with over 200 of the world’s largest corporations, and her work for Burger King, Häagen-Dazs, 7UP, Gillette, Tropicana, Twizzlers and more is legendary. She’s also famous for having launched the first and longest-running podcast about design, Design Matters, and has authored six books, contributed illustrations to publications like The New York Times and Fast Company, and had artworks included in the Boston Biennale, the Chicago Design Museum, and more. Named one of the most influential designers working today by Graphic Design USA, she’s a creative polymath with a resumé second to none. But that’s not the only reason why you’ll love Millman. She’s a frank and funny speaker, engagingly open about topics that larger egos almost never touch on, like rejection and creative insecurity. A late bloomer, she believes anything worthwhile takes time. Fascinated by how we create our own lives, and the choices we make on the way to becoming who we’re meant to be, she explores the personal side of creativity – who creates and why, and what lessons we can learn from them. As the host of Design Matters, she’s interviewed close to 500 artists, designers and [...]

A recent showcase of classic and contemporary Herman Miller furniture pieces at the Greenhouse restaurant celebrated enduring style and taste. Seating that allows for both great comfort and productivity is so important that the South African government has just passed new laws to ensure employees don’t have to endure dodgy ergonomics in the workplace. One imagines iconic industrial designers Charles and Ray Eames would approve. The pair believed that furniture needed to be as functional and playful as it was good-looking, as the inviting folds of their famous lounge chair and ottoman attest. This and other mid-century classics, such as the duo’s striking moulded plywood chair, stood elegantly at ease on the borders of a summer lunch at the Greenhouse restaurant in Constantia in December. Hosted by global furnishing company Herman Miller, the media event was an informal ode to much-loved favourites from its Classics Collection, with a nod to some newer design stars. All items on show are available in South Africa through local distributor All Office. Something old, something new Regional manager Robert Reilly was on hand to recap a little of the illustrious 100-year-old-plus company’s history. The Eames were engaged by the firm’s first design director, [...]

Design Indaba’s yearly lineup is a highly anticipated event on the creative calendar. Having established itself internationally as one of the premier multidisciplinary programmes in the world, it consistently draws the globe’s luminaries to its stage. But it’s not just inspiration for inspiration’s sake that the conference advocates. With ‘a better world through creativity’ as their guiding principle, founder Ravi Naidoo and his team have continually shown their commitment to positive change through design-led thinking. In line with this powerful impetus, they’ve created a legacy for including speakers in the programme whose work seeks to better the world we live in – whether through technological advances, environmental advocacy, or simply social change that fosters healthier communities. The event can boast star-studded speaker alumni – leaders and achievers in a variety of fields – that constitute the who’s who of international design. Anyone from Thomas Heatherwick to Patricia Urquiola, Tom Dixon, Brian Eno, Yves Behar, Jaime Hayon, and scores of other global luminaries have graced Design Indaba’s stage to share their progressive work in genres as diverse as business innovation, product design, costume design, performance art, architecture, food design – and many more. The common denominator among its myriad speakers and [...]

Hot off the press! Clout / A heartfelt celebration of South African design is a gorgeously curated design compendium sharing the collaboration between Nando’s design programme, Clout, and established and emerging creatives. South African design is thriving as never before – in part due to the support of Nando’s notable design programme, Clout, which showcases a host of creatives on its various platforms. The global restaurant giant is one of the biggest exporters of local design – its support for the industry extends to its Hot Young Designer competition, the print magazine Clout, and the online catalogue and purchasing platform Portal to Africa, which has facilitated more than R34m worth of design sales to date. In July last year, it spearheaded Nando’s Business Development Support Initiative to support design businesses. “As a business in South Africa, we are mindful of the need to create employment opportunities for young people as well as offer ongoing hands-on support to SMEs,” says Michael Spinks, Nando’s property and development director. “We are proud to boost the design sector by facilitating exposure to global opportunities.” To enhance its print oeuvre, Clout has brought out a gorgeously curated design compendium of the work and big [...]

Littlegig, the world’s only all-inclusive 24-hour festival, returns to Wiesenhof Farm in Cape Town for the second time, from 28-29 January 2017 with a progressive line-up of highly coveted experiences spanning international music, food tastings, fashion, fine art and design. Littlegig is the first festival of its kind to include access to carefully handpicked events, food, drinks and accommodation in the ticket price. This year’s event will once again inspire lovers of art and design by showcasing new bespoke pieces created by upcoming furniture designer Xandre Kriel, a sculptural installation by fine artist Rowan Smith, and a live painting performance by rising star, Atang Tshikare. These highlights are featured alongside a glittering array of custom-designed installations staggered throughout the festival landscape. Some wildly popular elements from the inaugural Littlegig event will return to contribute to the spirit of the 2017 event. Together, stimulating installations and themed zones by leading stylists will make for a heady visual and sensory feast. The art and design elements running throughout Littlegig are there not for design’s sake alone, but have been carefully chosen to enhance the overall experience. The Gin Bar installation designed by leading local designer Porky Hefer for the first Littlegig festival [...]

Anura Vineyards, a breathtaking wine farm situated in the Cape Winelands, has revealed spankingly modern interiors for its new events venue. Nestled between the towns of Paarl and Stellenbosch, this venue provides more than just idyllic surroundings and award-winning wines – it offers a contemporary design direction in a landscape usually associated with traditional architecture… Having already created the heady contemporary space for the wine farm’s restaurant and brewery, Wagon Trail, it was unsurprising that Inhouse Brand Architects was commissioned to design the new building’s interiors. Inhouse was directed by the client to connect the style of the existing restaurant with that of the events space. Set to host a wide range of functions such as weddings, launches and conferences, it was essential that a stylish and inclusive aesthetic was chosen, forming a neutral backdrop for any function. Creative director, Aidan Hart, and senior designer, Brenda Hart (both of whom had previously headed the Wagon Trail project), opted for neutral colours to contrast the venue’s high ceilings already clad by the client in solid Oregon pine. Light-colour porcelain tiles were selected for the flooring, along with a weathered-plaster paint finish, to complement the warm wooden hues and establish a distinctly [...]
