Boasting break-out designer names and exclusive products and designs, Design Lab is a must-shop this summer season! Eight promising creative brands have been clustered together into a living retail “laboratory” – and just in time to meet the festive demand. This new incubator store, known as the Design Lab, has opened its doors at the bustling Watershed, within the iconic V&A Waterfront precinct. Design Lab’s shelves boast handmade leather jewellery from Nondwe Nyathi, bespoke linen and homeware from Jenine Allchin, and work by several members of Our Workshop in Langa, supported by well-known local designer Heath Nash. The Our Workshop offering includes: custom-painted and embroidered clothing from Anele Nono; wall hangings by Malibongwe Nohesi; wooden bowls and platters by Ado Ludidi; upcycled e-waste jewellery and wall-mounted trophy heads by Sizwe Shumane; beaded candelabras, wire animals and trophy heads by Richard Mandongwe; and upcycled pendant lamps and wall hangings by Heath Nash. In essence, the “lab” is a concept store with a difference. It’s a go-to for fresh style that’s proudly “Made in Cape Town”. All these rising brands have been set on the path of retail success thanks to a collaboration between the Craft and Design Institute (CDI) and [...]

If you think you’ve come up with an idea for a purpose-led solution to our country’s many social and economic issues, now’s your chance to enter the RE:SOLVE Challenge. You could be chosen to form part of a six-month design thinking programme and win your share of R100 000 in grant funding to develop your concept further. But hurry, entries close on 31 October 2021. RE:SOLVE is funded by the City of Cape Town, and organised by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI), a non-profit company with 20 years of success in developing creative people, small businesses and the craft and design sector in South Africa. RE:SOLVE’s aim is to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit of individuals and teams to co-create bold solutions, with a focus on access to economic opportunities, quality healthcare, food security, and water and sanitation. “The RE:SOLVE Challenge is a fantastic opportunity to join in a facilitated process that will help South African innovators take their ideas from concept to more of a reality,” says Erica Elk, Group CEO of the CDI. “We are looking particularly for solutions that can improve the lives of the most vulnerable in our society. It’s a challenge not just for designers, but [...]

Over the next three years, up to 60 Cape Town-based creative businesses and 200 learners will benefit from the Cape Skills and Employment Accelerator. Local design companies in need of machinist capacity are urged to submit applications for support until 21 October 2021. The Cape Skills and Employment Accelerator is focused on creating employment opportunities in SMMEs for youth and women. The project is made possible thanks to the National Skills Fund in collaboration with the City of Cape Town and is implemented by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI). Businesses will benefit by taking on funded learners who are being trained as machinists for clothing, textiles, soft furnishings, leather and footwear. The learners will receive an NQF2 Certificate in Clothing Production which includes workplace, as well as classroom, training as part of a 12-month learnership. Business owners are supported through the Accelerator, to develop their human resource capacity – their systems and abilities to create new jobs, recruit new staff, induct and performance manage them. The learner will spend 75% of the time in the business and 25% of the time in the classroom. The qualification will equip the learner with the skills and knowledge to participate effectively in workplace [...]

Imagine an urban aquaponics farm that feeds local communities? Or an App that allows you to share information about poor road conditions? Or even, an electrical grid storage battery… These concepts are not so far off from being realised, thanks to the RE:SOLVE Challenge. South Africa is full of untapped ideas that hold the potential to solve for the pressing challenges experienced by the people who live here. This – combined with the impact of COVID-19 on the country, which revealed a deep necessity to re-examine and re-imagine how we do things – is what sparked the RE:SOLVE Challenge. This purpose-led, design thinking challenge, which calls on the entrepreneurial and creative spirit of South Africans to rebuild and pave the way forward, was launched in October 2020. RE:SOLVE is now in its 2nd iteration, with the new 2021 Call for Entry open until 31 October 2021. Funded by the City of Cape Town, and organised by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI), RE:SOLVE invites individuals and teams to co-create bold and innovative solutions with a focus on areas such as transport, hygiene, food security, education, medical care, retail and micro-enterprises. The top big ideas that are identified through the challenge [...]

Did you know that 60% food relief during lockdown came from civil society? Far outweighing any government interventions, it points to the power of the people to help solve the food security challenges in our country. This revealing insight surfaced during the recent #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2021, which was organised by Craft and Design Institute (CDI) in collaboration with the Mission Network of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa. The Festival also saw the launch of the RE:SOLVE Challenge, an eight-month support programme for entrepreneurs with a share of R100 000 grant funding available for selected local innovations. The Challenge is now open for entries and aims to help entrepreneurs develop new, or refine existing, products and services to solve some of SA’s pressing challenges, including food security. World Food Day on 16 October, which is themed “Our actions are our future – Better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life”, is an opportunity to place our food system into sharp focus and highlight the need for home-grown innovations to address systemic challenges. It is a system that is broken for millions of South Africans who struggle to access, on a daily basis, affordable, nutritious, and [...]

It is resoundingly clear that we need to act in very meaningful ways to address the issues that face us as a nation, and a planet. But we are also drowning in opinions masquerading as facts; not to mention the politics. Enter the fourth annual #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL, a local public event that consciously gathers together a diverse range of people, who may not often or easily come together, to have the difficult and uncomfortable conversations about South Africa’s biggest challenges. Secondly, the festival aims to support South African innovators and entrepreneurs to action their solutions to these issues. This year’s #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL runs from 20 – 23 September 2021, and takes participants on a deep dive into the major fault lines in South Africa – brutally exposed by the impact of COVID-19 – in order to stimulate ideas and action that result in inclusion and change. Private sector businesses, communities, designers, thinkers, do-ers, visionaries and policy makers from across the country and beyond are invited to participate in this collaborative public event. The “unconference” style of this year’s festival allows for small physical gatherings and site visits, online conversations, and facilitated design thinking sprints, all aimed at supporting local innovators [...]

Hanover Park’s mother-and-daughter duo, Rene and Anusca Baron provide a sterling example of small business success for women within Cape Town’s communities, and demonstrate how an effectively implemented business accelerator programme has helped catalyse their growth. Mother Rene is a jeweller while daughter Anusca is a fashion designer. Together they are Baron Design House (www.barondesignhouse.com), a locally loved clothing, fashion accessories and jewellery brand. They fly the flag for upliftment against the odds and have grown a sustainable business despite the negative economic impact of the pandemic. They have shown it is possible to create employment for others within their own hard-hit community, tapping into local support being offered to clothing and textile SMMEs – most recently the Cape Skills and Employment Accelerator project. This project, which is now open for another round of SMME applications, got underway in 2021 to boost skills development and capacitate Cape SMMEs to improve and grow production – creating jobs and accelerating the recovery of the clothing and textile sector locally. This dynamic duo’s story, one of starting out from humble beginnings and rising to meet the future, provides a “proof point” of inspiration for other small businesses – and especially those run by [...]

Despite the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic and other shocks to our economy, there are green shoots of growth in some sectors – this includes, for example, small businesses who have focussed on ecommerce and digital services. Capitalising on and funding this growth potential will be key to rebuilding the local economy. With this in mind, the CDI Capital Growth Fund has opened for grant funding applications. Small businesses that are experiencing growth or are poised for expansion in any sector and can create jobs are encouraged to apply. CDI Capital is a niche emerging impact funder, and subsidiary of the Craft + Design Institute (CDI) non-profit, which has a 20-year track record of success in supporting small businesses in South Africa. As an impact funder, CDI Capital is committed to creating positive social and economic impact in the SMME sector and the South African economy. From 2012 -2015, CDI Capital Growth Fund created 464 jobs in 45 businesses with participating businesses growing their combined annual revenue by 73% – exceeding the fund’s initial targets. The current round of funding, supported by the National Treasury’s Jobs Fund, aims to support up to 60 businesses to create 600 new jobs by 31 [...]
