Eight promising creative brands have been clustered together into a living retail “laboratory” – and just in time to meet the festive demand. This new incubator store, known as the Design Lab, has opened its doors at the bustling Watershed, within the iconic V&A Waterfront precinct. Design Lab’s shelves boast handmade leather jewellery from Nondwe Nyathi, bespoke linen and homeware from Jenine Allchin, and work by several members of Our Workshop in Langa, supported by well-known local designer Heath Nash. The Our Workshop offering includes: custom-painted and embroidered clothing from Anele Nono; wall hangings by Malibongwe Nohesi; wooden bowls and platters by Ado Ludidi; upcycled e-waste jewellery and wall-mounted trophy heads by Sizwe Shumane; beaded candelabras, wire animals and trophy heads by Richard Mandongwe; and upcycled pendant lamps and wall hangings by Heath Nash. In essence, the “lab” is a concept store with a difference. It’s a go-to for fresh style that’s proudly “Made in Cape Town”. All these rising brands have been set on the path of retail success thanks to a collaboration between the Craft and Design Institute (CDI) and [...]

Importers, retailers and decorators – as well as design-loving members of the public – have their sights set on NEXT21, a South African product showcase that will reveal the latest furniture, lighting, textiles, fashion accessories and homeware from 23 top talents. NEXT21 is set to go live online using the latest interactive video exhibition technology at www.thecdi.org.za/next21 from 25 March 2021 onwards and will run for a full year. Now in its 4th edition, the annual NEXT Trade Exhibition is an export development initiative of the Craft and Design Institute (CDI). The CDI is a South African non-profit company with two decades of success in developing creative people, small businesses and the craft and design sector at large. In previous years, NEXT took the form of a week-long exhibition staged in Cape Town. For 2021, NEXT has been re-strategised to give it increased longevity and a wider global reach.
Pure Single Rum by James Copeland. Bold and Full-Flavoured with No Additives. Fermented and Small-Batch Distilled in the Cape of Storms. This award-winning rum is small-batch distilled in a distillery on the Cape Peninsula, South Africa by James Copeland, with each and every bottle being bottled and branded by hand. From James: “I’ve concentrated on Copeland Rum to have as much flavour a white rum can have without it needing ageing to smooth it out. The results are amazingly deep and tropical, fruity and caramelised. It’s the perfect rum for a classic showcase cocktail like the original daiquiri.” Tasting note This award-winning craft rum has been fermented and distilled with the utmost care to unlock the noble flavours within molasses. Hints of litchi skin and pineapple aromas lead to spun sugar, cacao and deep tropical fruit on the palate. A true friend to fresh fruit mixers and classic cocktails that let its bold character shine.
