Beyond being the country’s leading furniture and lighting design competition, the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search competition has evolved into a highly effective platform for helping young designers transition their work from conceptual design thinking to actual marketable products that can be manufactured and sold at scale.
2Stories is a new content collective by serial entrepreneur Joanne Hope and seasoned content director Anelde Greeff. Not “just another content agency”, 2Stories offers boutique-level service with big-agency experience that turns the usual model on its head. “Imagine a traditional content marketing agency. We’re not that,” explains chief operating officer Hope. “We are a new genre. Think smaller, and with way more flex appeal. We speak, write, strategise, conceptualise, plan, direct and produce content marketing fluently.” A modern approach to the C Word 2Stories believes in work that is driven by humans, not channels. Both founders bring a wealth of editorial experience to the table: Greeff spent 15 years at New Media in various roles such as head of content: food division, editor-in-chief of Eat Out, and content director of Woolworths TASTE. She is currently also a director of SheSays Cape Town – Africa’s first chapter of the global movement focused on the engagement, education and advancement of women in creative industries. Hope was general manager of the South African operations for global content marketing agency John Brown Media, where she oversaw operations and client service for Capitec, Life Healthcare, Old Mutual and BMW Mini amongst others.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the renowned Design Indaba Conference, the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout, has honoured the founder of this world-class event, Ravi Naidoo, with an annual residency programme in his name. The announcement of the new Ravi Naidoo Residency for Emerging Creatives was made at the recent Design Indaba Conference, which took place from 26-28 February 2020 at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town, and was broadcast via simulcast to Johannesburg, Durban, Potchefstroom, Port Elizabeth, Namibia and Nairobi. This year, and each year going forward, Clout will select one stand-out creative from the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives class of that year to be the recipient of this Residency. The Design Indaba Emerging Creatives is a longstanding programme spearheaded by Design Indaba and supported by the Department of Arts and Culture. Each year, the Design Indaba selects a class of 50 successful applicants who receive a plethora of support, advice and benefits from the Design Indaba. This ranges from return flights to Cape Town from their home city, and accommodation for the duration of Design Indaba, to tickets to attend the Design Indaba simulcast in Cape Town, the exhibition and display of their work during the Design [...]

No idea is too weird or absurd for multi-award-winning advertising maven Richard – aka Rick – Brim to consider. In fact, the Chief Creative Officer of adam&eveDDB thrives on bonkers, leftfield thinking and mines the creativity of a team that’s delivered some of the most applauded ad campaigns in the world today. It’s not hard to see why the communications agency was named Advertising Agency of the Decade by Campaign magazine – under Brim’s direction since 2013, it’s won seven Grand Prix awards at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, and has also won loyal fans for the brave, emotional work for which it’s best known. Campaign’s Creative Person of the Year in 2018 and Chief Creative Officer of the Year in 2019, Brim’s brilliance finds expression in a range of virtuoso campaigns. He’s known as the ‘King of Christmas’ for his heart-hugging holiday campaigns, including ‘The Boy and the Piano’ for John Lewis & Partners, which tells the story of Sir Elton John’s first piano, and the shamelessly adorable ‘Monty the Penguin’, again for John Lewis. He also made yuletide waves with his hilarious ‘Sorry, I Spent it on Myself’ campaign for Harvey Nichols, encouraging shoppers to put [...]

You needn’t leave the kids at home when visiting this year’s Investec Cape Town Art Fair at the CTICC from 14-16 February 2020, as stimulating creative activities await the young – and the young at heart – at Lalela’s exhibition presence at the fair. The non-profit arts education programme for at-risk youth will be exhibiting artworks created by Lalela learners as well as hosting Kids-4-Kids Tours, in addition to mounting an Interactive White Wall which invites all visitors to make their mark… This year, Lalela will show off a range of inspiring artworks created by youth at-risk who participate in Lalela’s arts education programme. Selected pieces will be exhibited on the walls of Lalela’s stand and are available for purchase, with the proceeds going towards funding the NPO. What’s more, Lalela will coordinate Kids-4-Kids Tours taking place on 14 and 15 February 2020. As the name suggests, these are curated tours of the fair aimed at fellow school pupils, coordinated and undertaken by Lalela learners themselves. The Kids-4-Kids Tour Guides are chosen from Lalela’s Grade 11 and 12 learners at Silikamva and Hout Bay High Schools, and they will be assisted by Lalela alumni. Tour groups – which ideally cater [...]

Cécile celebrates the life and work of Cécile Tilley, a design doyenne, style icon and the founder and ongoing inspiration behind renowned interior design studio and retail company, Cécile & Boyd. Cécile & Boyd is internationally respected for their award-winning hospitality design for Singita as well as various high-level residential projects around the world – not to mention astonishingly layered and visually captivating stores located in Durban, Cape Town and online. A South African powerhouse that has successfully redefined the experience of luxury, they have set new standards for the globe. Timed to coincide with the celebration of the company’s 30th anniversary, Cécile is a tribute to the woman behind the name, whose inimitable courage, creative instincts and inherent charisma inspired all those who crossed paths with her. The memoir has been painstakingly and lovingly put together on behalf of Cécile & Boyd by creative duo Kerryn Fischer and Luanne Toms, with beautiful visuals ranging from archival family snaps to photographs from some of Cécile & Boyd’s early projects. Although Cécile passed away in 2014, her energy still informs the company’s aesthetic and attitude today. The book honours the considerable contribution she made to the interior design landscape of South [...]

Business of Design, the conference aimed at creatively revolutionising the way you work, returns to Cape Town and Johannesburg this October for its Spring 2015 edition. This third installment of the bi-annual programme boasts an all-new talk schedule, including first-time Business of Design speakers and fresh topics, with the Cape Town conference hosting guest international speaker Jim Brett, President of West Elm, the US-founded homeware retail store. Business of Design is a two-day conference led by top industry experts and design professionals to guide, inspire and offer practical tools to change the way people do business. Says Co-Founder Laurence Brick, MD of Platform Creative Agency and Creative Director of 100% Design South Africa: ‘We’re proud to already have had 69 of South Africa’s best minds speak on our stage during the previous two conferences in both cities. The networking that has taken place between them and the over 500 alumni delegates we now have has been invaluable.’ ‘Business of Design appeals to all industries,’ adds Co-Founder Trevyn McGowan of Source, Southern Guild and GUILD. ‘We’ve not only had designers and architects attend, but people from retail, accounting and marketing.
