This September marks the start of Spring and Organic Month – a month-long celebration of organic products, brands, producers and farmers taking place across the world. It’s also Heritage Month here in South Africa. To celebrate the forward-thinking global organic movement and as part of its dynamic Heritage Month programme, Cultivate marketplace in Salt River, Cape Town is hosting a lively talk on Biodynamic Viticulture followed by a tutored organic wine tasting on the evening of Wednesday 15 September. The dynamic double bill is free to the public and kicks off at 17h30 with a 30-minute talk and 15-minute audience Q&A session with Angus McIntosh aka Farmer Angus. This is chased by a tasting of Spier’s internationally recognised organic wines, that is hosted by Spier organic winemaker and Cultivate member Tania Kleintjes, and which starts at 18h30. There is no booking required for either event and strict COVID-19 protocols will be observed. McIntosh, under the mentorship of Christo Kok, started farming on 126 hectares of irrigated pasture at Spier Wine Farm near Stellenbosch in December 2008. Farmer Angus is one of two grass fed, pasture-reared beef producers in the Western Cape. Biodynamic and regenerative agricultural principles and practices are applied [...]

This September will come alive with an impactful programme of heritage events, talks and live performances leading up to South Africa’s National Heritage Day on 24 September 2021. Presented by Cultivate at its newly opened marketplace in Salt River, Cape Town, the festival will run from 8-30 September 2021. The programme will highlight natural history, arts and culture, music, and wine through an exciting line-up of prominent historians, musicians, cultural figures and winemakers. Not only is there stellar talent to be experienced, but the celebratory festival is entirely free to the public. If our Musical Heritage is what moves you, then come and listen to hip hop artist and poet Quinten Goliath aka Jitsvinger, and musician, singer and composer Lungiswa Plaatjies, who will give a live performance of African music played on indigenous instruments. On the visual arts front, expect to hear from the likes of provocative contemporary artist Athi-Patra Ruga and Anelisa Mangcu. The history events will compel your attendance. Historian and author Patric Tariq Mellet will deliver a talk titled ‘Remembering – Early Black Farmers & Winemakers of the Cape 1679 to 1750’. Oenophiles will love the carefully chosen array of wine tastings and talks by the winemakers [...]

As part of its month-long Heritage festival, Cultivate Collective will be hosting a keynote talk by the venerable Patric Tariq Mellet, aka “Zinto”, on the evening of 8 September 2021. The festival highlights natural history, arts and culture, music, and wine through a high-profile line-up of prominent historians, musicians, cultural figures and winemakers. Cultivate is a dynamic, newly launched initiative that aims to inspire and realise a local wine industry landscape that is made in the image of the people who live and work in South Africa. In keeping with Cultivate’s aims, Mellet will be presenting on the topic of “REMEMBERING – Early Black Farmers & Winemakers of the Cape 1679 – 1750”. A specialist in this area, his talk will trace the beginnings of local black practitioners, bringing to light how Apartheid narratives sought to bury this vital part of our winemaking history. Himself a formidable and highly respected figure in contemporary South African culture, politics, history and heritage, Mellet is the author of four notable books. These include: Drakenstein Erasure – The Black Roots of the Vine, An Untold Cape History; Lenses on Cape Identities – Exploring Roots in South Africa; and The Lie of 1652 – A [...]

Cultivate aims to inspire and realise a wine landscape that is made in the image of the people who live and work in South Africa. This dynamic collective opens the doors of its new Cultivate Marketplace – which is located within the popular Salt Orchard development / complex in Salt River, Cape Town – to the public on 8 September 2021. Cultivate was established in 2020 after in-depth research by The City (thecityagency.co.za) director Zahira Asmal, who designs and leads the initiative. Through removing barriers to entry and visibility, Asmal has envisioned a way forward for Cultivate members and their accomplishments to become widely known and appreciated. This opens up the market for both members and eager consumers and businesses keen to embrace their skills and products. In short, Cultivate unlocks a world of opportunity and ushers new opportunities into the world. The collective’s talented members – some of whom are multiple award-winners – span winemakers, producers, sommeliers, entrepreneurs and other wine professionals and consultants in wine analytical services, distribution, internationalisation, tourism and retail. Asmal made a careful and thoroughly considered selection when inviting members to join Cultivate, choosing people that, like her, also wish to see a change in [...]
