Littlegig, the world’s first 24-hour, curated, “all-included” festival, returns to Cape Town in 2017 with an eclectic line-up of international talent in music, food and design. Taking place at Wiesenhof farm in Stellenbosch from 28-29 January 2017, Littlegig’s music lineup is headlined by DJ Culoe de Song, an internationally-acclaimed proponent of African House; German electronic DJ/violinist, Seth Schwarz; Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Captain Planet; and award-winning local singer/songwriter Nakhane Touré. In addition, there is a host of talented acts that fill the festival programme. Johannesburg-based international DJ/producer Culoe de Song’s music has been described as ‘epic African house with a strange touch.’ His international success over the past few years is testament to his ability to segue international and African sounds, mixing the best beats from both worlds. A protégé of Black Coffee, Culoe now releases globally with German label Innervisions and has played at top tier parties including the coveted DC-10 Circo Loco in Ibiza, Watergate and Fabric. Culoe will be playing a 3-hour back-to back sundowner DJ set with executive producer Strat3gy (who is also a partner at House Afrika record label and Black Coffee’s Africa Rising). Seth Schwarz is the headline DJ for Littlegig’s Night Stage, held on [...]

The highly successful Cape Town Art Fair (CTAF) is returning in February 2017. This 5th edition promises to be bigger and bolder in size and scope, exhibiting an extraordinary blend of top quality contemporary artworks from galleries in Africa and around the world. In keeping with its growth and positioning, the organisers have appointed a chief art curator – globally recognised, South African born curator, Tumelo Mosaka. Mosaka is returning to the country after more than a decade to spearhead Cape Town Art Fair’s rise to prominence on the international art fair scene. Currently working as an independent curator in New York, he has had an illustrious career in the United States, with positions as Associate Curator of Exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum and Contemporary Art Curator at the Krannert Art Museum in Champaign, Illinois. Mosaka’s curatorial projects have explored global and transnational artistic production especially from Africa, the Caribbean and North America, examining themes such as racial injustice, migration, and identity, some of the most urgent social concerns of our time. His past exhibitions include Andrew Lyght: Full Circle at the Dorsky Art Museum (2016), described by the New York Times as “stunning” and “long overdue”; Poetics of Relation [...]

For the first time on the African continent, a curated selection of the world’s biggest design awards – the internationally renowned INDEX: Design to Improve Life® based in Copenhagen – will participate as a collaboration partner with Open Design Cape Town Festival. The selection of innovative design that showcases how design improves lives in Africa and beyond, is a featured highlight of the festival’s “Design is for Tomorrow” 2015 Open Design expo showcase, which runs from 12-23 August 2015. “With challenges like ebola, electricity supply and housing, Africa is an amazing base for designers whose projects seek to improve lives through innovative design,” said Suné Stassen, Open Design Festival Director. “The solutions to these and other problems lie in innovative designs produced by people with a passion for making things. We cannot underestimate the ability of designers, innovators and even the man on the street to change the world.” The 12-day city-wide festival will also host a number of other innovative design projects and exhibitions derived from international partnerships with Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria and the United States at various festival hubs such as Cape Town City Hall, the Watershed and the Lookout at the V&A Waterfront. Created by Denmark [...]
