Award-winning De Toren Private Cellar has revealed the new packaging of its 2018 right-bank Bordeaux style vintage: De Toren Edition Z. Affectionately known as ‘Z’ by wine aficionados across the world, the symphonic blend of five Bordeaux varietals has a slightly modified name and a stunning new label that showcases the progress of the vintage while retaining the essence of its 15-year legacy and the recent brand relaunch. Edition Z 2018 This meticulous approach to progress prompted the label’s evolution, giving the ruby-red Z with its soft, approachable notes and luscious palate a subtle and respected new identity. The new packaging of the Z has a sophisticated yet almost earthy feel, with intricate diamond-shaped impressions. The metallic silver typography is a shimmery remnant of the previous label. The stately and instantly recognisable De Toren logo – the essence of a lion – still dominates against an intense maroon backdrop. The final touch is the winemaker’s signature and, fittingly enough, the brand tagline, ‘Experience Exceptional’. The new label of the Z is as powerful and layered as its flavour. One of the most popular wines in the cellar’s premium range, the 2018 vintage from which the Z originates was one of the most multi-layered and complex in the history of the vineyard.
The epitome of meticulous winemaking, The Black Lion is one of the most luxurious 100% Shiraz ever produced in South Africa. Exquisitely handcrafted by De Toren Private Cellar in Stellenbosch, Cape Town, this bespoke Shiraz is born out of De Toren’s continuous quest for the exceptional. The estate presents The Black Lion as an heirloom piece that bears testament to profound skill, passion and dedication. A mere 1 162 bottles of the 2020 vintage have now been released. This is the 9th vintage release of this extremely limited-edition wine. For the 2020 vintage, the Shiraz grapes, though slightly smaller in size, were more powerful than previous vintages. Full-bodied and with great depth, the result is a robust and vibrant vintage with unequivocally expressive flavours. The Black Lion 2020 vintage is exceptionally multi-layered, with complex aromas of blackberry, spicy pepper notes and a hint of toasty cigar. On the palate, it has a firm yet elegant tannin structure showcasing concentrated purple, black fruit and wood-delivered sweet spices, which lures one into a long, intense finish. Speaking of this luscious wine, De Toren Cellar Master, Charles Williams states: “There is nothing else like this magnificent 100% Shiraz. It has even more richness, [...]

Sixty percent of the permanent vineyard and cellar team at De Toren Private Cellar is female. What’s more, the harvesters and vineyard tenders are female only. It’s an unusual statistical skew for the wine industry, but not an unusual approach for De Toren – the luxury estate boldly embraces innovation and extreme care in the name of producing rare and exceptional wines that are consistently among the world’s most awarded. An exception to the rule on several fronts, the Stellenbosch estate lays claim to many industry firsts. It was one of the first to plant and produce Bordeaux-style blends in South Africa; the first to introduce a gravity-fed cellar; and the first to achieve over 90 points from wine critics for a maiden vintage. Consider also, that De Toren’s vineyard rows are aligned to face the prevailing winds off False Bay and not at right angles to the wind as farmers are taught. By doing this, cooler air is channelled through the vineyard, lowering the temperature, extending the ripening period and keeping the vines free of disease. Like its wines, De Toren’s practices are clearly beyond the norm. The rationale behind female-only harvesters and vineyard tenders is primarily a practical [...]

Savour one of the world’s finest examples of winemaking, when you sip on the extraordinary BOOK XVII. This opulent, limited-edition wine is meticulously handcrafted by De Toren Private Cellar in Stellenbosch, Cape Town. It is a wine with a reputation that precedes it – so much so, that annual client pre-bookings secure about two thirds of the mere 1 400 bottles that are lovingly produced each year. The remaining bottles of the 2018 vintage have now been released. This year marks the 9th vintage release of this exceptionally exclusive wine. The 2018 vintage of this fabled South African Bordeaux-style blend is even richer and more elegant than before. The full-bodied BOOK XVII has often been compared to the famed “Super Tuscans” of the world – those wines characterized by bold winemaking, experimentation with Bordeaux barriques, and an embracing of modern viticulture. BOOK XVII indeed encompasses all this and has been hailed as South Africa’s most luxurious wine. It is also the highest-ever rated South African wine by one of the globe’s leading voices in wine, the US-based Wine Enthusiast. Standing proud amongst the world’s best, De Toren’s BOOK XVII is an exceptional example of extreme viticulture – no expense or [...]
