Inspired by Italian architecture with an eye to the future, the collection reimagines classic stones in contemporary beauty with the high performance of Dekton® The Cosentino Group, the global leader in producing and distributing innovative and sustainable surfaces for architecture and design, introduces a new high-performance, ultra-compact stone collection: Dekton® Pietra Kode, the vision of renowned designer and architect Daniel Germani. Pietra Kode reinterprets the timeless beauty of three classic Italian stones: Vicenza, Travertine and Ceppo di Gré. Each of these antique natural stones is decoded and then recoded within three Dekton® concrete series, enhancing their properties and the many possibilities for their use in architecture and design. Each colour breathes contemporary elegance into the design, with the rich shades and textures creating a sensory experience beyond what the eye can see. The carbon-neutral Dekton® surface allows the collection to be used for a virtually limitless range of indoor and outdoor applications. Pietra Kode marks the third collection developed by Dekton® with designer and architect Daniel Germani. While Germani’s previous Industrial and Chromica collections for the brand have often had an industrial bent, the seven hues that make up Pietra Kode channel the influence of Vicenza, Travertine and the iconic Ceppo [...]

Thabisa Mjo has done it again with an incredible new collaborative project that focuses on telephone wire weaving. The acclaimed local designer’s latest collection is called Alfred’s Lights, and is a line of striking telephone wire pendants. Mjo worked closely with Elizabeth Joubert of interior design studio, Tin Lab, together with renowned master weaver, Alfred Ntuli – who is known for weaving geometric patterns with telephone wire, and a range of other collaborators to bring the collection to life. Mjo, the founder of Johannesburg-based studio Mash. T Design, has always been adamant that hers is a practice of African storytelling through design. Over the last few years, as her business has grown, she has increasingly sought out collaborations with artisans who use techniques that are quintessentially South African. “For me, arts and crafts, and anything handmade, represent luxury, and my aim is to merge these traditional production methods with forward-thinking design,” she explains. In this instance, telephone wire weaving is a longstanding local artisan practice rooted in the 1960’s, when Zulu night watchmen started weaving scraps of telephone wire around their traditional sticks. The practice became popular among Zulu communities, and today there is great innovation and creativity in the [...]

South African ceramic designer Jan Ernst is a multidisciplinary creative specializing in functional art and spatial design using clay as his main medium. The work is driven by his fascination with natural structures such as corals, fungi, and rock formations. His organic designs stem from his abstract understanding of form and space influenced by his background in architecture, his connection with the natural world, and his South African heritage. He is currently exhibiting his collectible design pieces through the New York branch of international contemporary sculptural design and art gallery, Galerie Philia. After this leg of the exhibition, entitled “Into the Wild”, select pieces move on to Galerie Philia in Paris. “Into the Wild” is an original concept organized by Galerie Philia that showcases hand-sculpted art design pieces in natural landscapes. According to the gallery, “this physical translation enables the public to admire the design artworks in a novel way by creating a fruitful discrepancy. The eyes not only look but apprehend the works creatively in this particular context. Silent resonances hatch and multiply between the artworks and the surrounding nature. The idea is to convey a distinct sight of what sculptural design work is…” For “Into the Wild”, Ernst’s [...]

The Chef’s Studio is a unique concept space located in the heart of Cape Town. The venue hosts interactive dining experiences and masterclasses for people who are as excited about what goes into creating a beautiful dish, as they are about eating it. The up-to-the-minute space was recently revamped by interior designer Monya Eastman of Stokperd. The custom-built workstations feature slick yet hard-working surfaces from Caesarstone, are equipped with state-of-the-art cooking technology and feature professional cookware from Scanpan. It’s a professional kitchen down to the last chef’s knife, but it’s also a stylish, contemporary environment that epitomises the notion of “fine casual”. If you’re planning a kitchen renovation, either at home or for a client, it is the ideal space to test top-notch equipment and witness a working professional kitchen that has been styled to make people feel like they’re in a wonderfully appointed home, designed with food lovers in mind. For this reason, the venue is part of the Cape Town Design Trail, conceptualised by Decorex Africa. “Stokperd has balanced the need for high functionality with a high-end interior. This is a kitchen space that works, and works hard, but it is also one that we just love to work [...]
