Local beekeeping is currently faced with a range of challenges, including adverse weather conditions and the rapid decline in bee numbers worldwide – which is a global concern seeing as bees pollinate crops that are produced for human consumption. The cheap price of low-quality imported honey is also a threat to South African honey farmers. However, a new type of beehive has the potential to revitalise honey production in this country. The concept sees traditional wooden hive structures replaced with an innovative concrete frame. Although a concrete hive is not in itself a new idea, the new Beegin hive provides several design adjustments that have helped a test group of beekeepers to increase their productivity. The progressive, aptly named Beegin was created by Ivan Brown and was born out of this intrepid industrial design student’s goal to expand local beekeeping and contribute to both job creation and food security in this country. Brown is currently studying for a master’s degree at the University of Johannesburg. His work on Beegin, which started as a research project, has been featured at several international design conferences. He has also co-authored several research papers. Brown came up with the design when he entered the [...]

The PPC Imaginarium Awards was established by PPC Ltd as a means to give emerging designers and artists the opportunity to showcase their talent and creative thinking by using cement as their primary medium. Now in its third year, the competition is the most supportive of its kind in the country and has seen many of its past entrants and finalists go on to become recognised in the art and business community. The PPC Imaginarium encompasses six categories, namely, architecture, fashion, film, industrial design, jewellery and sculpture. This year, the competition has assembled an extraordinary group of some of the industry’s most influential and outstanding creatives on the national and regional judging panel, who will evaluate the various category submissions, choose category finalists and the overall winner. Fashion and design consultant Allana Finley, will fill the role of judging the fashion category and that of national judge. Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US, Finley has worked on fashion brands such as Eileen Fisher, Tiffany & Co. and Gucci America, and is currently a board member of the Museum of African Design. Over the past 13 years, her focus has been on telling the story of the African continent in [...]

Un-established artists and designers stand a chance to change their careers through financial support, recognition, mentorship and guidance by entering the 2015 PPC Imaginarium Awards. After a successful inaugural competition in 2014, the PPC Imaginarium Awards is back; and is still South Africa’s richest arts and design competition. Having evolved from the longstanding PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards, the PPC Imaginarium encourages artists and designers to create and express their abilities using Portland cement – based concrete as a primary base or material. The competition will feature six disciplines in the arts and design fields. These disciplines are sculpture, jewellery, architecture, film, industrial design and fashion design. Boasting prize money to the value of half a million rand, each category winner stands a chance to win R 50 000; while runner-up contestants receive R 15 000. The overall competition winner will receive the grand prize of R 100 000 at the winners’ exhibition in 2016. How to Enter the PPC Imaginarium Awards The PPC Imaginarium Awards are open to South African citizens, resident holders as well as foreign students with study permits, who are not professionally established in their respective fields. Entries may be submitted by individuals or team collaborations, and artists and [...]
