Following a dazzling display at Decorex Cape Town, Cosentino is bringing its Atelier Cosentino stand to Decorex Joburg. The 30th-anniversary edition of this renowned event is taking design to new heights, and the leading Spanish surfacing brand is joining the celebrations. At Decorex Cape Town in June, Cosentino debuted its spectacular collaborations with Capetonian furniture design brands Haldane Martin and MŪVEK. Atelier Cosentino at Decorex Joburg will see the return of Haldane Martin’s designer furniture, plus a brand-new collaboration with The Grand Living. Located in the dedicated Kitchens & Bathrooms hall on Level 0 of the Sandton Convention Centre, this exciting display of cutting-edge furniture design is set to be a highlight of the Joburg show. Haldane Martin, the eponymous brand of premium outdoor furniture designer and director Haldane Martin, is known for its strong visual identity and South African character. Following its debut at Decorex Cape Town, Haldane Martin’s brand-new Dombolo outdoor table will be displayed for the first time in Joburg. This voluptuous piece, named after the Xhosa word for dumplings, is topped with Cosentino’s Dekton Umber from the Kraftizen Collection, a durable engineered stone with a hand-plastered stucco surface effect. Paired with intentionally oversized legs, this table’s [...]

Exploring various themes, Spier Light Art delves into the ethereal and the whimsical, the political landscape, humanity’s changing relationship with technology, tenacity in the face of adversity, and Spier’s unique history. Here we take a look at some of the installations featured in Spier Light Art 2023: Orpheus by Georgia Munnik In the Greek tragedy, Orpheus loses his dead wife Eurydice a second time as he fails to fulfil the condition of bringing her back to life: not to look back at her as she crosses the threshold from dead to living. The artwork’s title, ‘Orpheus’, refers to the colonisation of Stellenbosch and the incessant gaze of historically white wine farmers looking at the soil as a resource. ‘Orpheus’ is a glass neon light sculpture derived from a digital rendering of a font that the artist developed from the Australian parasite plant, dodder. The parasite plant cannot photosynthesise; instead, it extracts nutrients from host plants through suctioning tendrils. Dodder’s ‘long strings of cursive writing’ inscribes its tendrils on host plants, strangling them while calling things into being – one cannot invoke without naming and the parasite font forms words to call to them.
Thabisa Mjo has done it again with an incredible new collaborative project that focuses on telephone wire weaving. The acclaimed local designer’s latest collection is called Alfred’s Lights, and is a line of striking telephone wire pendants. Mjo worked closely with Elizabeth Joubert of interior design studio, Tin Lab, together with renowned master weaver, Alfred Ntuli – who is known for weaving geometric patterns with telephone wire, and a range of other collaborators to bring the collection to life. Mjo, the founder of Johannesburg-based studio Mash. T Design, has always been adamant that hers is a practice of African storytelling through design. Over the last few years, as her business has grown, she has increasingly sought out collaborations with artisans who use techniques that are quintessentially South African. “For me, arts and crafts, and anything handmade, represent luxury, and my aim is to merge these traditional production methods with forward-thinking design,” she explains. In this instance, telephone wire weaving is a longstanding local artisan practice rooted in the 1960’s, when Zulu night watchmen started weaving scraps of telephone wire around their traditional sticks. The practice became popular among Zulu communities, and today there is great innovation and creativity in the [...]

South African ceramic designer Jan Ernst is a multidisciplinary creative specializing in functional art and spatial design using clay as his main medium. The work is driven by his fascination with natural structures such as corals, fungi, and rock formations. His organic designs stem from his abstract understanding of form and space influenced by his background in architecture, his connection with the natural world, and his South African heritage. He is currently exhibiting his collectible design pieces through the New York branch of international contemporary sculptural design and art gallery, Galerie Philia. After this leg of the exhibition, entitled “Into the Wild”, select pieces move on to Galerie Philia in Paris. “Into the Wild” is an original concept organized by Galerie Philia that showcases hand-sculpted art design pieces in natural landscapes. According to the gallery, “this physical translation enables the public to admire the design artworks in a novel way by creating a fruitful discrepancy. The eyes not only look but apprehend the works creatively in this particular context. Silent resonances hatch and multiply between the artworks and the surrounding nature. The idea is to convey a distinct sight of what sculptural design work is…” For “Into the Wild”, Ernst’s [...]
