Jeanne Gang is one of the most important architects of her generation. She was named one of the 100 most influential people of 2019 by TIME magazine and 2016 Woman Architect of the Year by Architectural Review, and has been awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship for her work. Her award-winning multidisciplinary practice, Studio Gang, is driven by an ethos of ‘actionable idealism’ and is concerned with how to make cities more livable, with an emphasis on sustainability. Excited to push the boundaries of what architecture can achieve, Gang likes to improve upon the built environment in ways that are focused on people and that encourage community-building. Her Aqua Tower – the tallest woman-designed building in the world when completed in 2010, an accolade soon to be surpassed by her nearby Vista Tower, now under construction – is an 82-storey undulating skyscraper that received the Emporis Skyscraper Award as skyscraper of the year in 2009 and was recently named one of the most important buildings of the decade by Dwell. Firm-wide recognitions include the National Design Award for Architecture Design from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in 2013 and an Architizer A+ award in 2016. With offices in Chicago, New York, [...]

We’ve been fixating on a pair of Maui Jim Ebb & Flow PolarizedPlus2® sunglasses ever since spotting them across a crowded optometrist’s showroom. They stood out from the me-too designer and not-so-designer brands cluttering the shelves. Their clean lines and vision-forward approach to eyewear set them apart from the pack. We knew nothing about Maui Jim at that point, other than it was love at first sight. On getting to know the brand a little bit better, our infatuation deepened. Durable, lightweight and sporting polarized lenses, Maui Jim sunglasses are all about enhancing the way you see the world around you. Thanks to Maui Jim’s proprietary PolarizedPlus2® Lens Technology that protects your eyes from 100% of UVA and UVB rays, the company can support these claims. Not only does the PolarizedPlus2® Lens Technology block 100% of UV rays, it also removes 99,9% of glare. Plus, colour is boosted so that you see all those views in crisper detail and contrast. The sunglasses really are designed to make you change the way you see the world! So how did this approach start? The brand’s very name is a giveaway for the company’s origin. Yes, Maui Jim was born on the beaches [...]

MONSTERA DELICIOSA, VOLUME I, the first solo exhibition by Cape Town designer Porky Hefer, opens at Southern Guild Gallery on 20 November, with an old-school craft-consciousness that will appeal to a modern audience. Sponsored by Woodhead’s leather merchants, the monumental show will premier fantastical underwater animal-inspired hanging seating environments, transforming the double-volume gallery space into a magnificent faux waterscape. From a crocodile donning avocado leather, to a puffer fish woven with Kooboo Cane, these creatures will welcome gallery visitors on an intriguing journey of discovery. ‘My pieces get people to think about nature, and its fragility, and make them consider how to protect it,’ says Porky of the nest environments with which he has become synonymous. ‘They’re also about protecting local crafts so that these traditions don’t die out.’ The six pieces featured in Monstera Deliciosa, Volume I, have been created using unique local artisanal skills that include weaving, stitching and splicing. ‘No one is playing with these skills in this way,’ explains Porky. ‘People are latching on to technology, but this evolves so quickly that it’s hard to benefit from it, because by the time you master a technological aspect it’s already dead.’ He highlights the importance of reviving [...]

Winner of the Sculpture Category, Mlonishwa Chiliza’s winning piece reflects on his experience of living in a hostel. Mlonishwa Chiliza came from a working class background and a hostel provided him with a home. The intention to depict an underprivileged kitchen is a reflection of his experience. The kitchen is often the most important place in a hostel, where the residents would gather to chat about social and political issues. This also created a sense of unitywithin the building. Portraying a two-plate stove with an empty kettle intended to grab the viewer’s attention in getting a feeling of a township life. The medium of cement is hard and strong, which acts as a metaphor for Mlonishwa Chiliza’s life – enduring the hardships of poverty, hunger and hopelessness. These objects are handmade mainly to portray the interior of an informal environment, and the use of cement alludes to the strong sense of permanence. Chiliza thoroughly enjoyed the medium, seeing it as a constructive device to record and share his ideas. Lastly, the floor replicates “uMlabalaba”, a game, played in most hostels. The structure of a sleeping chair reveals the insufficiency of space that can be experienced in a hostel.

Bokang Lehabe, winner of PPC Imaginarium Awards’ Fashion category, is a young creative originally from the rural village of Ganyesa in the North West. He left his home to go study in Cape Town and recently graduated with a B.A Degree in Fashion Design from Fedisa. Lehabe’s three pieces, entitled “The Beast We Call Fashion” use concrete to convey a subtle African aesthetic. “My work is all about how fashion consumes people and how we end up becoming it,” he says. Bokang Lehabe specifically made all the pieces tight fitting to emphasise the female form. “The beast”, as Lehabe calls it, appears as a pair of wire horns and a synthetic animal-skin skirt, which are worn around the midriff on two of the pieces. Judges loved Bokang Lehabe’s entry for its interesting contrast of materials. Soft fabric and lace are offset by the brutality of poured concrete. The inclusion of a notably African identity within each garment was also very well received.

With a Masters in History of Decorative Art and Design from Parsons, in conjunction with the prestigious Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York, Emma de Crespigny is an expert collector and producer of a wide range of desirable interior objet, ranging from furniture to glassware. Her recently opened C20 Galerie, located in Cape Town’s trendy Woodstock precinct, functions as both shop and showroom, targeting architects, interior designers and collectors, as well as members of the public. The galerie is open weekdays and by appointment. De Crespigny recently relocated from New York to Cape Town to open her new destination store. After a ten-year apprenticeship to a prominent 20th century dealer in Manhattan, de Crespigny has developed a keen eye for rare and obscure pieces. The distinguishing feature of the aptly named C20 Galerie is the inclusion of truly unique and original 20th century pieces from France, Germany, North America and Italy. World renowned furniture designer Vladimir Kagan, who designs for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, describes Galerie as ‘an impressive collection of vintage furniture’, stating that ‘anyone in the market for period modern furnishings and accessories can certainly find happiness in (this) store’. On top of her skilful acquisition [...]
