Date: Wednesday 18th April Time: 6pm to 8pm including drinks Venue: Iziko South African Museum, TH Barry Theatre, Company’s Gardens, CBD, Cape Town Ticket: R100 for members; R120 for non-members; R50 for student non-members; R20 for student members. Book here. “Themes” is a series looking at some of the broad concepts that drive creativity, across the disciplines – visual arts, music, performance, architecture and design. For each concept, two creatives are invited to consider how a particular theme informs their work. This iteration explores “making” with visual artist Liza Grobler and architects and product designers Douglas & Co. In the modern and contemporary era, making is but one tool in the tool kit of creatives – for instance, conceptual art does not require making let alone making by the artist’s hand; designers render on software and fabrication is outsourced. For those creatives who make as part of their practice, what does making offer them? Perhaps in the case of our two speakers, making is another way of thinking, via using their hands? Visual artist Liza Grobler has exhibited widely in South Africa and internationally. She is the recipient of various awards including the Africa Centre award to attend the Khoj [...]

EULER’S ASHES is a tray that originated from an interchangeable table composition of the HERR EULER table by Douglas & Company; a tribute to Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler’s logical diagrams of representing areas of overlap among circles. Aged 76, at about midday on the 18th of September 1783 after a lunch with his family, Euler was discussing the newly discovered platet Uranus and its orbit with a fellow academician. All of a sudden the pipe Euler was smoking slipped from his hand and moments later with the words Ich sterbe! (I am dying!), he lost consciousness and died a few hours later. EULER’S ASHES will launch in Paris this week as part of NeoFuzz a Special Project at AKAA – Also Known As Africa Art and Design Fair. Curated by Amy Ellenbogen, the exhibition will feature 20 African design objects. Douglas & Company was invited to create an object specifically for the exhibition that evokes a sense of play and celebration of African design. Originally conceptualised as an ashtray with tribute to Leonhard Euler’s last living hours, the tray can really be used for anything. A combination of glazed and unglazed stoneware is used in a rich earthy colour palette. The AKAA Art and Design Fair will host 38 galleries and [...]

Douglas & Company set up shop in Cape Town for one month only. Located at 150 Long Street, the pop-up store will trade until 28 November 2015. Titled FRIENDS & FAMILY, the shop celebrates contemporary South African design and is a one stop emporium for local design products, furniture, and objets d’art. Hosted by design studio Douglas & Company, the shop showcases covetable items from a range of contributors including limited edition silk scarves by L’MAD COLLECTION, illustrations by LU WEST STUDIO and RENEE ROSSOUW STUDIO, interior products by DAMN GOOD LOOKING and a selection of local design printed matter including the last few copies of Paternoster chef Kobus van der Merwe’s West Coast odyssey, Strandveldfood. Interior items include limited editions and unique one off pieces, with many of the products not available in any other retail spaces, so early birds will have the pick of the best. Liani Douglas of Douglas & Company says “We are using the retail platform to boost and support the work of likeminded local designers. The selection started by including family and friends doing interesting work, but quickly evolved into making new friendships with a larger network of local designers that produce items that are not [...]
