South Africa’s longest running platform for supporting rising young talent is the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives programme. Now in its 16th year, the programme continues unbroken in 2021, after completing its previous cycle in March 2020. For 2021, the approach to the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives has been reformatted in response to the times. The new programme takes the form of an extended virtual exhibition and individual online profiles on www.designindaba.com, documentary videography, ongoing social media content on Design Indaba’s thriving channels, masterclass sessions with international and local experts that include UK-based Artsthread (one of the globe’s foremost resources for and about young talent), and inclusion on Design Indaba’s soon-to-be-launched Google Arts and Culture presence. All this in celebration of the new crop of creatives who have emerged through the submissions and curatorial selection process. Design Indaba Emerging Creatives is supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture with the aim of nurturing new talent. The programme successfully functions as a launching pad for careers. Over for years, it has provided a much-needed break for scores of young designers. According to Design Indaba founder Ravi Naidoo: “We are extremely committed to this programme, and especially now, what with the [...]

To mark the 25th anniversary of the renowned Design Indaba Conference, the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout, has honoured the founder of this world-class event, Ravi Naidoo, with an annual residency programme in his name. The announcement of the new Ravi Naidoo Residency for Emerging Creatives was made at the recent Design Indaba Conference, which took place from 26-28 February 2020 at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town, and was broadcast via simulcast to Johannesburg, Durban, Potchefstroom, Port Elizabeth, Namibia and Nairobi. This year, and each year going forward, Clout will select one stand-out creative from the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives class of that year to be the recipient of this Residency. The Design Indaba Emerging Creatives is a longstanding programme spearheaded by Design Indaba and supported by the Department of Arts and Culture.
For 2020, the three invited curators of the annual Design Indaba Emerging Creatives programme constitute a thrilling trifecta of top local talent. The responsibility for selecting the Emerging Creatives Class of 2020 falls to milliner Crystal Birch, conceptual art director Mokoena Kobeli and furniture maestro Siyanda Mbele. First up is creative force Crystal Birch, whose varied skills across the spectrum uniquely equip her to mentor and guide young creatives. Known primarily for her millinery business, Birch also has extensive experience in styling, art direction and set design. She studied fashion design at Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion in Stellenbosch and spent time honing her skills under the guidance of Noel Stewart and Piers Atkinson, two of Europe’s topmost hat-making talents. Since then, she has forged a path of her own and her irreverent and fanciful hats have come to adorn the heads of South Africa’s most fashion-conscious. Joining Birch in the lineup is Mokoena Kobeli. The Joburg-based conceptual art director, graphic designer and illustrator graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Johannesburg’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) and continued to study at leading international and national creative institutions, from the School of Visual Arts (New York) to [...]
