The Goatshed restaurant at Fairview Wine and Cheese Estate in Paarl is hosting another annual series of its famous winter evenings. After last year’s sold-out events, the hearty food-and-wine dinners are back by demand. From the beginning of June to the end of September 2017, the Goatshed – which is usually a day venue – will be open on seven selected evenings and will serve a three-course paired menu. Co-owner of the country-style eatery, Shannon Riley plays host while resident chef, SJ Nel serves up well-loved Fairview classics alongside themed dinners that are inspired by a world of cultures and tastes. Fairview is renowned for its award-winning selection of artisanal cheeses and a broad range of handcrafted, star-quality wines, and these will once again be a staple feature of the winter evenings. Under floor heating, wood fires and soul-warming wines will melt the cold Cape Town winter, allowing guests to fully enjoy the exceptional quality of Fairview’s fresh farm produce. In addition to cheese and wine, Fairview produces its own free-range lamb, beef and pork, farm butter, fresh artisanal loaves and pastries that are baked daily, a range of olives, preserves, relishes, spreads and cordials. Each winter evening comes with [...]

The 2017 National Wine Challenge winners were announced on 25 April 2017 at a gala event, where Fairview Wine and Cheese Estate in Paarl was named a Vineyard Consistency Award winner, garnering over 10 top accolades this year. In addition, Fairview took joint second place overall across the entire spectrum of categories and wines. Speaking of Fairview’s outstanding achievement, the CEO of The National Wine Challenge competition, Robin von Holdt comments: “We don’t grant an overall award to a vineyard as best performer. But if we did, Fairview would probably crack that this year, too. Altogether this can only be described as a stunning set of results across the board!” The National Wine Challenge is in its seventh successful year and each year the judges’ task gets more and more difficult. The selection process is thorough and rigorous as greater numbers of fine wine entries intensify pressure for the limited victory spots. Each and every wine is objectively and independently assessed with great care and professional diligence. Three Fairview wines each achieved a double acknowledgement, winning both Top 100 and Double Platinum awards. These three wines, each completely different in style, are the Fairview Eenzaamheid Shiraz, Fairview Extraño and Fairview La [...]

With a lineage of great entrepreneurs, innovators and winemakers, it’s no wonder that Fairview constantly finds itself at the forefront of the wine and cheese industry. Now, 35 years after its famous Goat Tower was first built, this is still the case, with the introduction of a new landmark attraction – South Africa’s first skywalk and activity playpark for goats. “They constantly innovate every single aspect of the customer experience, which has led to their success,” says international wine tourism consultant, Peter McAtamney, an international guest speaker at the recent The Business of Wine and Food Tourism Conference held in Cape Town in November 2016. McAtamney, founder of Wine Business Solutions, an Australian firm that provides performance improvement solutions to the wine industry, ranks Fairview as the leading visitor experience in the world: “In my experience and from the numbers we see through benchmarking of wineries across Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States, there is no more commercially successful cellar door than Fairview.” McAtamney’s statement is supported by Fairtrade-accredited wines that have pioneered new varieties in South Africa, exceptional cheese (Fairview recently received a prestigious gold rating for its Chèvre Roue Goats Milk Cheese at the 2016 [...]

Launching on International Grenache Day (16 September 2016), Charles Back and the Fairview team are proud to release their new, Single Vineyard Grenache wine called Stok by Paaltjie One of the key philosophical traits Fairview has orientated itself around is to always push the boundaries of traditional winemaking through ingenuity. For decades, Charles Back and his team have done this by planting varieties that are best suited to their surroundings. Their newest release, Stok by Paaltjie Grenache, is one such variety, being the 6th addition to their Single Vineyard range and enjoying a new wave of appreciation among locals. “Our Stok by Paaltjie is so called as, translated from Afrikaans, it means Vine by Post. Vine by Post is a unique trellising system, whereby the vine grows upwards along an individual supportive pole, giving each vine time to develop its own tiny character. This is how the grapes to make this wine were grown,” explains winemaker, Anthony de Jager. “The vineyard itself is also one of the most striking on the farm, rich with soils that have been chiselled, shaped and terraced over the course of nearly two millennia.” The vineyard in which the Stok by [...]

Fairview Wine Estate’s restaurant, The Goatshed, will host its third annual Charity Dinner this year on 21 October 2016. After battling cancer for many years and realising what a true privilege it is to have private health care, Co-Owner Shannon Riley of The Goatshed wanted to help those in a less fortunate position by hosting a charity event. Each year, The Goatshed Charity Dinner supports a new charity, with this year’s ticket sale proceeds going to the very deserving Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Tickets include a hearty four course dinner prepared by The Goatshed’s renowned chef, SJ Nel, as well as beautifully paired Fairview wines to complement each dish. Highly accomplished Chef, Author and Presenter, Sue Ann Allen will be conducting the evening as this year’s MC. Don’t miss out on this very special event. Book your seat and help to make a difference in a needy child’s life. Tickets cost R500 and are available on www.quicket.co.za For overnight accommodation, Fairview recommends the following neighbouring farms: Belair: http://www.belair.co.za/belairWP/ Email: info@diamantestate.com Diamant Estate: http://www.diamantestate.com/ Email: info@belair.co.za For more information, please visit Fairview on http://www.fairview.co.za/ and Goatshed on http://www.goatshed.co.za/ Contact Goatshed@fairview.co.za 021 863 3609

The La Capra Goat Run, an annual favourite from Fairview, takes place this year on Saturday 15 October 2016. This trail run begins and ends at the renowned Fairview Wine Farm in Paarl and is held in aid of numerous charities, including Drakenstein Hospice, Boland Autism, Sunfield Home, Wellington Lions Club, Paarl Mountain Reserve, and The Sunflower Fund. Trail runners can expect a real treat of a route, climbing out from vineyards onto the fynbos slopes and upper areas of the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. For the more fun-minded, family-oriented groups, there’s also a short Fun Walk that’s free for kiddies. The event caters for all levels of trail runners. There are the entry level 5km and 8km routes, and for the more adventurous ‘goat runners’, the challenging 15km and 28km ‘extreme’ options, which include summiting the striking Paarl Rock, the second largest granite outcrop in the world (after Uluru in Australia). Ascending the ‘Pearl’ is a memorable experience, as you feel so small, trickling over its vast slope. The panoramic view from the top is astounding, with Table Mountain and the sea in the West and the Boland Mountains in the East. The diversity in the ‘extreme’ [...]
