USURPA is delighted to present one of South Africa’s most sensational young artists, Johannesburg-based illustrator, painter and multimedia artist Seth Pimentel, aka African Ginger, for his very first solo digital exhibition, The Pride Comes Before the Fall. Hot on the heels of his participation in USURPA’s group exhibition The New Medium, Pimental will present a collection of 12 digital portraits honouring the diversely melanated skin of persons of colour (POCs) in South Africa. Pimentel’s artistic practice revolves around pushing the limits of modern portraiture by seamlessly blending painting, drawing and digital illustration, resulting in an innovative hybrid style that embraces experimentation. In recent years, Pimental has channelled his craft into many local exhibitions, and collaborations with major international brands such as Converse, SneakerLab, Redbull and Jameson. In stark contrast to Pimental’s typically desaturated pieces, The Pride Comes Before the Fall is an exploration of colour as we’ve never seen before from the visual artist. Pimental describes the radiant colour palette of the 12 works he created for this exhibition as a ‘celebration of a new beginning’ in an experimental phase of his career. This new beginning comes as a result of what Pimental calls a conversation [...]

Minibus taxis are often in the news, but rarely for promoting the arts. Turning the tables on this perception, is respected local artist Thania Petersen, who has collaborated with taxi owners Ziyaad and Fatima Dyason to turn a public transport vehicle into a moving masterpiece that passengers can appreciate en route. The “pimped-up” ride forms part of the UnInfecting the City public arts festival currently underway in Cape Town. The festival is presented by the University of Cape Town’s Institute for Creative Arts. “The Taxi Project is a public arts Initiative to make art accessible to people who do not have the privilege to experience much, if any, art in their lives. By turning a taxi into an immersive art experience – from showcasing video work, visual art, recorded poetry readings and even theatre productions played on a screen inside the vehicle – commuters’ lives can be enriched with the arts at any given moment of the day,” explains Petersen. To achieve this end, the interior of the Dyasons’ taxi has been kitted out a 22-inch screen and sound system, on which Petersen’s latest film will play. She has covered the entire outside of the vehicle in the art from the [...]

The opening of the new Jaffer Modern art gallery in Green Point, Cape Town comes at a time when human connection and congregation are sought after but limited due to social distancing. The gallery has responded to the times by mounting an inaugural exhibition entitled GATHERING: A Community of Portraits and offering visitors the option of private, one-on-one guided walkabouts that are free of charge. GATHERING: A Community of Portraits was curated with the intention of exploring our deep desire to commune and to showcase the diversity, cultures and commonalities of the African continent. Expect to be captivated by a plethora of intriguing portraits selected by guest curator, Margie Murgatroyd. The multiplicity and diversity of artistic voices creates a variety of avenues and perspectives to be explored and discovered. Private gallery tours will offer insight into these perspectives while allowing for personal interpretation of the works and interaction with the guest curator. It is a wonderful opportunity to delve into the alchemy of curating an exhibition and simultaneously see the concept realised. The private walkabouts offer the opportunity to uncover the narrative of the exhibition through its various themes. From the importance of cattle to humans, to gender, identity, belonging [...]

EXHIBITUS is the second solo exhibition by Cape Town artist Lucie de Moyencourt. Self-taught, this show pays homage to her informal and idiosyncratic art-training. De Moyencourt’s work was developed through the art of observation in her daily life, as well as by being exposed to European art from a young age through visits to her family in France. In this show, Lucie takes us with her on a recent Summer trip to Europe. Her ink drawings are her diary and act as an itinerary of her travels. We are given access to the great Museums and Galleries of Europe through her paintings and we gain insight into which works the artist herself is drawn to. Lucie not only pays attention to the works displayed in these famous collections; she shifts her gaze to observe the way visitors in galleries interact with the works on the wall. The show acts as more than just a recording of gallery visits – it also highlights the tension between art history and technology, the image and the making of the image and ultimately the masterpiece and the mundane. Dates: The exhibition will run until the 31st October Venue: The Voorkamer Gallery at Chandler House, 53 Church Street, Cape Town.
