The exclusive BOOK XVII brings the rare opportunity to savour an opulent wine, the most exceptional of South Africa’s Bordeaux-style blends. The release of its 10th vintage marks a decade of meticulous handcraftsmanship. It has been an exceptional ten years for the acclaimed BOOK XVII, with the 2019 vintage yielding the most spectacular and distinct vintage De Toren Private Cellar has produced yet. To bid farewell to the end of a successful decade while embracing the next, the 2019 vintage is enrobed in stunning new packaging. This includes the redesign of its gift box, label, iconic key and wooden frame in which the wine is safekept, all elevating the release to even greater heights. BOOK XVII is ever in pursuit of the exceptional; the magnificent new packaging is a sumptuous hint at the pleasure within and the rich history behind it. Like the wine itself, the label is bespoke and crafted by hand. It features an original illustration by renowned international artist Steven Noble, created using an ancient engraving technique and inspired by the narrative of BOOK XVII. Here, the labour-intensive age-old handicraft of Noble’s artistic medium echoes BOOK XVII’s own method of its creation, and is a nod to [...]

The sublime result of pioneering cellar techniques and precision viticulture, De Toren’s The Black Lion bears the hallmark of all the estate’s wines – a devotion to superlative quality. Known primarily for its focus on the Bordeaux cultivars, De Toren’s The Black Lion was the estate’s first venture outside of these stylistic parameters. An answer to the challenge of creating ‘the best wine in the world’, this 100% shiraz certainly sets the benchmark. Hailed as the most powerful shiraz ever produced in South Africa, De Toren’s The Black Lion is a large, bold and powerful wine, a masterful alchemy of hand-chosen fruit. Wine Enthusiast has historically awarded this robust beauty a stellar 95 points, securing it the title as Wine Enthusiast’s highest ever rated SA Shiraz. This wine – crafted from the ancient soils of Africa and cultivated from specially selected vines that are nurtured by special hand-manicuring and individual attention – is the result of a meticulous and extreme approach to winemaking. The Black Lion is truly, and profoundly, a labour of love. Taking into account soil combinations as well as meso and macro-climates, carefully selected vineyards from three unique sites – the Swartland (for its structure), Stellenbosch (for its [...]

Sixty percent of the permanent vineyard and cellar team at De Toren Private Cellar is female. What’s more, the harvesters and vineyard tenders are female only. It’s an unusual statistical skew for the wine industry, but not an unusual approach for De Toren – the luxury estate boldly embraces innovation and extreme care in the name of producing rare and exceptional wines that are consistently among the world’s most awarded. An exception to the rule on several fronts, the Stellenbosch estate lays claim to many industry firsts. It was one of the first to plant and produce Bordeaux-style blends in South Africa; the first to introduce a gravity-fed cellar; and the first to achieve over 90 points from wine critics for a maiden vintage. Consider also, that De Toren’s vineyard rows are aligned to face the prevailing winds off False Bay and not at right angles to the wind as farmers are taught. By doing this, cooler air is channelled through the vineyard, lowering the temperature, extending the ripening period and keeping the vines free of disease. Like its wines, De Toren’s practices are clearly beyond the norm. The rationale behind female-only harvesters and vineyard tenders is primarily a practical [...]
