To mark the 25th anniversary of the renowned Design Indaba Conference, the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout, has honoured the founder of this world-class event, Ravi Naidoo, with an annual residency programme in his name. The announcement of the new Ravi Naidoo Residency for Emerging Creatives was made at the recent Design Indaba Conference, which took place from 26-28 February 2020 at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town, and was broadcast via simulcast to Johannesburg, Durban, Potchefstroom, Port Elizabeth, Namibia and Nairobi. This year, and each year going forward, Clout will select one stand-out creative from the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives class of that year to be the recipient of this Residency. The Design Indaba Emerging Creatives is a longstanding programme spearheaded by Design Indaba and supported by the Department of Arts and Culture. Each year, the Design Indaba selects a class of 50 successful applicants who receive a plethora of support, advice and benefits from the Design Indaba. This ranges from return flights to Cape Town from their home city, and accommodation for the duration of Design Indaba, to tickets to attend the Design Indaba simulcast in Cape Town, the exhibition and display of their work during the Design [...]

Iconic industrial designers Charles and Ray Eames left an astonishing legacy behind. Aside from their stylishly functional furniture, their mid-century modernist home – at once residence and studio – comes under the spotlight this year as it celebrates its 70th anniversary. It was in this house that some of the designers’ best-loved furniture was created, with a number of items available to South African buyers through local distributor All Office stocks, courtesy of the Herman Miller Collection. Classics like their elegant ottoman chair and stylish lounge chair continue to grace local homes, and fans can visit the Eames House in the Pacific Palisades, California, to see where it all began. This famed property, built on a eucalyptus grove on a 1.4-acre plot, was finally granted National Landmark status in 2007. It attracts a large number of visitors – house walkthroughs are arranged by the Eames Foundation. The house started life as Case Study House No. 8 – Charles and Ray Eames designed it as part of a programme envisioned by Arts & Architecture magazine. The idea was to create a structure that expressed modern living using materials and techniques arising from the Second World War. In a 1945 design brief, [...]

Over the last decade and a half, art lighting company willowlamp has created a substantial body of work – a veritable library of remarkable designs and memorable silhouettes. Over time, the style of the designs has evolved too, from Creative Director Adam Hoets’ first iterations exploring sacred geometry and forms found in nature, to newer, more contemporary pieces that demonstrate a cleaner, more contemporary sensibility. willowlamp’s latest collection, launched late in 2018, sees Hoets come full circle with new lights that combine these attributes – they are both contemporary as well as informed by his first sources of inspiration. What remains true for all the brand’s designs, from day one to present, is a commitment to craft and a considered and conceptual approach. This gives the pieces enormous gravitas in an interior space and makes them iconic in their own right – modern heirlooms for future generations of design lovers. With a large number of these pieces – from old to new – in the same location for a very limited time, willowlamp wanted to take the opportunity to show off the breadth and variety of its work over the years. In order to do this, willowlamp is inviting the [...]

LEAN The LEAN side table is a simple interlocking construction of three elements. The two vertical and diametrically opposing elements of the timber base slot into one another, each supporting the other; each unable to stand without the other. The circular top, which can be of glass, stone, brass, is a at disc that sits in a recess provided by the timber base. The beauty of the table lies in its simplicity, in the reliance and relationship of one form upon another to create the whole. It is an assembly of simple elements, a visual haiku, the fewest amount of syllables expressing the maximum emotion possible. Available in a range of timbers and with options of glass, stone or timber tops, the LEAN side table is a succinct expression of the relationship between form and material. MAGNIFICO “Nature provides us with expressions of beauty beyond our own creation, this is the essence and function of the Magni co table.” The MAGNIFICO collection of tables focus on the beauty of natural materials and their inherent unique qualities. The material palette is raw, yet sumptuous, the materials express themselves with complete clarity. RATIONAL “I wanted to create the simplest table I could, going through a complex [...]

Exchanging big-city living for a more serene lifestyle, a young family opted for the private golf estate of Pearl Valley as its new home. On the outskirts of Paarl – a 30-minute drive from Cape Town – this home affords the couple and their children a style of living where the outdoor environment is a continual reminder of their expansive surrounds. Through the vision of interior architect Jon Case of design studio ARRCC, the living spaces were carefully conceived to produce a home epitomising casual luxury. ‘The subtle details and quality of finishes reflect a seductive living environment,’ says fellow ARRCC director Mark Rielly who also oversaw much of the home’s decorating. There is a strong tactile element throughout the house, which was designed by Gauteng-based architect Gardiol Bergenthuin, and it was this natural quality that the ARRCC team chose to champion, starting in the foyer. Here, ribbon-stone water-walls flank a bridge, with the sounds of cascading water welcoming one inside. Nature’s elements are visible throughout the design, often as focused visual features. By wrapping the home around a central courtyard garden with a reflective pond, the theme of living in nature is a constant connector to the home’s unique [...]

The 2019 installment of 100% Design South Africa is set to take place from 7 to 11 August 2019, alongside Decorex Joburg at the Gallagher Convention Centre. A sterling line-up of rising talent will be showcased alongside established industry stalwarts. The show features the darlings of the local design world, with designer Laduma Ngxokolo of MaXhosa headlining this year’s lineup as Feature Designer for 2019. ‘We invited Laduma to take part as this year’s Feature Designer for a number of reasons. His strong crossover capability from fashion to home makes him incredibly versatile. And his designs draw on personal heritage and a sense of culture, which we feel is an important narrative to champion,’ says Laurence Brick, creative director of Platform Creative, curators of 100% Design South Africa. ‘Additionally, he has an ability to intepret tradition in a very contemporary way, which makes him really exciting as a designer.’ The much-lauded multifaceted designer has branched out from the iconic graphic garments that have cemented him as a star on the local fashion scene, into equally dynamic homeware. For 100% Design South Africa 2019, he will be presenting his collection of rugs, cushion and throws, as well as his new trade [...]

The darling of Plettenberg Bay hospitality, the eponymously named The Plettenberg, has updated its old world glam in a recent refurbishment. The five-star Liz McGrath Collection hotel has overhauled its newly renamed Garden Room, Blue Room and Villas to embrace contemporary cachet whilst retaining tasteful charm. Situated on a rocky headland, The Plettenberg is gifted with the most spectacular site overlooking the ocean and offers the best 270-degree view in the bay. It was the site itself that provided the inspiration for the new interior direction. One of the main aims of the revamp was to bring the Garden Room and Blue Room up to the minute and create continuity throughout, as the previous style of these rooms was not in keeping with the rest of the hotel. The interior redesign was headed by the daughters of the late and much-loved Liz McGrath, Lesley Kelly and Susan Nathan, who co-own the hotel along with their brother Michael McGrath, the Liz McGrath Collection’s current chairperson. Lesley and Susan add their aesthetic style to all three of the group’s hotels, including the Marine in Hermanus and the Relais & Châteaux Cellars-Hohenort in Constantia. The duo has had extensive experience in interior design through [...]

Over 100 000 visitors were treated to an outstanding display of South African design, sponsored by Nando’s, at the recent Milan Design Week, held from 9-14 April 2019. The international food franchise supported a collective of six local designers who exhibited their work at Ventura Future Base in the Tortona District as part of a striking installation entitled Sacrosanct. The exhibition was curated by Thabisa Mjo of Mash T Design Studio, with mentorship from Tracy Lee Lynch, Creative Director of the Nando’s Design Programme. Ventura Future is a platform for bright young stars from across the globe, offering the best of contemporary design from a mix of international academies, designers, brands and labels. Mash T was invited to exhibit as part of Venture Futura by its organizer and curator Magriet Vollenberg of Organisation in Design. “It was a big success,” Vollenberg says. “We sold over 26 000 multi-entrance tickets and over 90 000 individual tickets to Ventura Future” during the fair. Sacrosanct was viewed by an impressive guest list including international media, interior designers who travelled to Milan for the annual fair and visiting dignitaries such as the South African Consul-General in Milan, Italy, Ms TSD Nxumalo.
willowlamp will take part in Euroluce at the Salone del Mobile for the first time this April. Renowned on the South African decor scene for its design-forward and inspiring creations, the company has previously showcased at African and Middle Eastern trade shows. Now expanding its reach into Europe’s illustrious design elite, willowlamp will be introducing the Milanese audience to a careful curation of its most striking designs. As the first South African designer lighting company to show its pieces on this prestigious platform, willowlamp cements its status as an innovator and market leader. Founder and creative director Adam Hoets studied architecture which gives his works a complexity and sophistication of structure and concept. ‘My journey began as an architect, which has been invaluable in shaping my ‘design’ mind. I decided on architecture because my reasoning was that I could be an architect and also be an artist but not the other way round,’ he says. Hoets made the transition from architecture to lighting design in 2005 due, in part, to his goal in developing a marketable design-related product. The variety of projects that Hoets has overseen since the inception of willowlamp is evidence of his confluence between architectural and artistic [...]
