are the warm heart of a home, where most of our entertaining is planned – but kitchen design trends evolve rapidly, so be ready for some changes… The days of keeping your guests out of the kitchen are past. A renaissance is afoot and, according to Decorex Africa’s Trend Report for 2020, it’s time to repurpose your kitchen as a multifunctional space, where cooking, entertaining, relaxation, reading and homework are all supported. This is the message delivered by Creative Director Anita Bloom, author of this authoritative report on décor, interior design and lifestyle trends, which gives us a teasing glimpse of what to expect from Decorex Durban 2020, where the overarching theme is ‘Lifestyle by Design’. Bloom, who ran her own design studio, Just Bloom Designs, before moving to Inspire Trade Expo for four years and then joining the Decorex Africa team, is uniquely positioned to identify and share shifting design and décor trends. She says the humble kitchen is evolving into part of an integrated living space, in which boundaries between rooms are blurring: “The trend is towards an open-floor arrangement, which creates fluid motion between different functional zones in this area of the home, so it’s possible to [...]

Decorex Africa’s Trend Report for 2020 gives us a teasing glimpse of what to expect from Decorex Durban, Cape Town and Joburg 2020, where designers and manufacturers showcase all the latest trends, concepts and products that will guide and inspire us. The broad themes emphasised in the report will be featured in the Mobelli Furniture + Living Trend House – Urban Living by Design, Insta-Interiors, the Trend Kitchen by Cosentino and Trend Installations as well as pop-up restaurants, cafés and feature areas at each show. Make a special note to visit the Lighting by Design Project, which will showcase exciting lighting trends at all three shows. Bloom, who authored the report, ran her own design studio, Just Bloom Designs, before moving to Inspire Trade Expo for four years and then joining the Decorex Africa team, and her vast experience in graphic design and exhibition curation perfectly positions her to identify and share shifting design and décor trends. When it comes to how we’ll be illuminating our homes, Bloom says we’ll be putting the strict minimalism of Scandinavian design behind us. “We’re moving towards softer, more nature-inspired interiors and correspondingly gentle illumination,” she reveals. “Think a multitude of hanging lights, floor [...]

This award rounds out Cosm’s first year of success on the market, taking home a suite of awards for the revolutionary design. Herman Miller introduced Cosm, designed by Studio 7.5, in Milan coinciding with Salone Del Mobile, April 2018. The chair officially hit the market in Autumn 2018. Over the last year, the market response for this revolutionary chair has been impeccable. Today, Cosm chairs have been sold to more than 1,700 companies in 90 countries around the world. On July 8, 2019, Cosm received the prestigious Red Dot Best of the Best Product Design Award—the competition’s top distinction in the “Office Chairs” category—for its innovation, functionality, formal quality, ergonomics, durability, symbolic and emotional content, product periphery, self-explanatory quality, and ecological compatibility. These criteria are used throughout the Red Dot’s search for “good design and innovation.” Prior to the announcement from Red Dot, many industry organisations recognised Cosm for its revolutionary design with awards and certifications including: #MetropolisLikes Award – NeoCon 2018 Product of the Year at Mixology 2018 Green Product Award 2019 Best of NeoCon Gold – NeoCon 2018 Interior Design HiP Award – NeoCon 2018 Cradle2Cradle Silver Certification – 2018 Fast Company Innovation by Design Award – Fast [...]

Accessed from Kloof Road, which winds along the western slopes of Lion’s Head, this site is positioned in the wind-protected suburb of Clifton. Years before any development was introduced, this slope was conceivably covered by indigenous forest and fynbos. Today, however, the area is developed and enjoys spectacular views over the sandy beaches, boulder outcrops, and Twelve Apostles mountains towards the south and sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean. The first aspect of the project that required addressing was the steep slope that would have to be excavated to accommodate the structure. The home was conceived as an arrangement of staggered blocks that rise along the side of the mountain, with the upper, private levels becoming appropriately shielded from both visibility and street-level noise. ‘The conceptual approach to the design was to reinstate the qualities of a natural landscape,’ says architect Phillippe Fouché of South African architectural firm SAOTA, who lead the project. The lower part of the building, an independent apartment, is then expressed as ‘a heavy stone plinth’, its gabion-walled exterior and cocooning interior of dark-stained oak and off shutter concrete reflecting the strata of the mountainside out of which they emerge. On top of this is a transitional space that is expressed [...]
