In a first for the Decorex Africa Portfolio – South Africa’s leading interior design, décor and product design events – a virtual expo experience will replace this year’s physical shows of Decorex Joburg and 100% Design South Africa. This interactive and virtual event will start on 6 August 2020 and will provide exhibitors, members of the trade, and the public at large with a unique online opportunity to engage and conduct “business as unusual”. In light of the ongoing restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Reed Exhibitions Africa (the company behind the Decorex Africa Portfolio) has looked to virtual solutions in a bid to continue to support the industry and its exhibitors. The decision not to host the physical events in 2020 was made following multiple discussions with the industry and partners, and upon the advice of local and national health authorities. “Because this is the new normal,” said Decorex Africa Portfolio Director, Sian Cullingworth, “we have adapted accordingly and explored new ways to enable the business to continue during these unusual times. While we are sad that we cannot host Decorex Joburg and 100% Design South Africa in their usual format this year, we are determined to do something [...]

The Herman Miller Aeron Chair is the perfect accompaniment to a home office. Why focusing on physical, mental, and emotional health is a must Written by Rebecca Greier Horton, Workplace Well-Being Knowledge Lead at Herman Miller Self-care has been a hot topic in 2020. And now, given the fact that many of us are working from home, it’s even more important. How do we look after our mental, emotional, and physical health while trying to manage the challenges of working remotely? When it comes to WFH, comfort is key. Take time to set up an ergonomic home office. This will help prevent the musculoskeletal disorders that can occur when you work on a laptop for long periods of time, and it will increase your cognitive engagement. So, where to start? Light It Up Select a spot where natural light is your primary light source. Research indicates our sleep cycles and even our hormones are positively affected by this. If your setup is near a window where you can let the fresh air circulate—even better! Police Your Posture Remember that bad posture still counts when you work from home, and that how you sit today will shape your body forever. It’s [...]

are the warm heart of a home, where most of our entertaining is planned – but kitchen design trends evolve rapidly, so be ready for some changes… The days of keeping your guests out of the kitchen are past. A renaissance is afoot and, according to Decorex Africa’s Trend Report for 2020, it’s time to repurpose your kitchen as a multifunctional space, where cooking, entertaining, relaxation, reading and homework are all supported. This is the message delivered by Creative Director Anita Bloom, author of this authoritative report on décor, interior design and lifestyle trends, which gives us a teasing glimpse of what to expect from Decorex Durban 2020, where the overarching theme is ‘Lifestyle by Design’. Bloom, who ran her own design studio, Just Bloom Designs, before moving to Inspire Trade Expo for four years and then joining the Decorex Africa team, is uniquely positioned to identify and share shifting design and décor trends. She says the humble kitchen is evolving into part of an integrated living space, in which boundaries between rooms are blurring: “The trend is towards an open-floor arrangement, which creates fluid motion between different functional zones in this area of the home, so it’s possible to [...]

Lorenzo Nassimbeni’s new solo exhibition, entitled ‘Home’ represents a sort of return. Born and raised in Cape Town, the coast and oceanic element of the city are close to his heart. Currently living and working in Johannesburg, the artist chose to view the city of his origin through the lens of, for him, its most special component, the sea. Consistently working in a series of layers, in the architectural tradition, Nassimbeni has divided the exhibition into 3 distinct parts, all relating to the ocean. They are, the pure essence of water as a substance (surface), the lie of the land beneath the surface of the water (submerged), and the built form interacting with the edge of the coast (interface, eg. tidal pool). The body of work seeks to uncover Nassimbeni’s understanding of ocean as architectural element, and in so doing, realise the essence of home, through the extraction of essence, and subsequent exposition of spirit. Artist’s statement Lorenzo Nassimbeni’s creative work is characterized by its focus on the area where the disciplines of architecture and fine art meet. This is expressed by identifying, extracting and representing the artistic meaning within urban and landscape conditions. His portfolio reveals that the space [...]
