Glenelly Estate, situated in South Africa’s idyllic Cape Winelands, has launched The Vine Bistro and reimagined its tasting room and glass museum. The new interiors display a sophisticated aesthetic inspired by Glenelly’s French heritage and charm. Created in 2003 by May de Lencquesaing, former owner of iconic Bordeaux Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the project was initiated with her two grandchildren Arthur de Lencquesaing and Nicolas Bureau, continuing the family involvement in wine since 1783. For the redesign, the owners looked no further than award-winning interior design firm Inhouse Brand Architects. The Inhouse team, guided by Director Phillip Wyatt and Senior Designer Brenda Hart, was tasked with designing the new ground level eatery and renovating the first floor tasting room. The brief from Glenelly was clear from the start; bring in the new, while preserving the timeless appeal that guests have come to know and love. Hart explains: “The client wanted a warm and inviting space that was slightly unconventional, with a modern French twist. They wanted it to be ‘very Glenelly’.” Drawing inspiration from the estate’s legacy and surrounding mountainscape, Inhouse created just that. To carry through Glenelly’s theme of mixing the old with the new, Inhouse incorporated [...]

Infrastructure investment company GAIA commissioned award-winning interior design firm Inhouse Brand Architects to create its new Cape Town office space. Following successful, large-scale projects for notable corporate companies, like Old Mutual, Santam, Sanlam and more, Inhouse was the clear choice based on demonstrated conceptualisation and implementation expertise spanning 15 years in the industry. GAIA’s offices are located in a striking building in the southern suburb of Claremont in Cape Town and was designed by well-known architect Professor Roelof Uytenbogaardt. The building’s façade, made up of concrete and exposed brickwork, exudes an industrial feeling that is cleverly juxtaposed with organic elements, like curved walls and timber beams. Inhouse Director, Phillip Wyatt and team leader, Megan Cloete, steered the interior design and were inspired by both the infrastructure industry and the building itself, which came with curved glass windows and intricate timber-clad ceilings. They opted for an industrial-organic aesthetic, and incorporated GAIA’s corporate colours of black, blue and gold, into the design. Cloete explains: “The building is absolutely beautiful. The aim of our design was to complement the architecture and not compete with it. We were able to achieve this by using neutral tones throughout the space, modern furnishings, as well as raw [...]

For a taste of New York in the Mother City, look no further than the fresh, sophisticated new offices of Urban Lime! Inhouse Brand Architects has unveiled a stylish redesign for the Cape Town branch of this international property management company. The commission was the second from Urban Lime; Inhouse previously refurbished the upper floors and common areas throughout the same building and due to the success of this initial project, was the inevitable choice to fulfil the client’s latest aspirations for the first and second floors. The client’s brief to Inhouse was to recreate the style of a luxurious New York corporate management office. It was important to steer away from the stark character of Urban Lime’s previous offices. The first floor of the Urban Lime building is dedicated to client-facing activities, and also functions as an informal meeting area. The Inhouse design team, led by Creative Director Aidan Hart and Associate Director Moiisha Visagie, introduced more luxurious elements into this area in order to reflect the importance of its function. Inhouse made the space more flexible by incorporating moveable furniture that could easily be adapted to accommodate groups of different sizes. The second floor of the building houses [...]

What can only be described as the ultimate “man cave”, Inhouse Brand Architects has converted the unused lounge area of a Fresnaye residence into an industrial-inspired dream pad for the family’s lucky teenage boy and his friends. Taking into account the youngster’s various interests such as skating, surfing and socialising, the Inhouse team aimed to create a trendy, multifunctional space. The project was steered by Creative Director Aidan Hart, and senior designer Jenine Bruce, who chose a modern industrial aesthetic for this youthful interior. Polished concrete flooring encompasses the entire room and sets the foundation for the interior scheme. More notably, a fully functional concrete skate bowl plays a major part in the design. This impressive structure was no easy feat. Initially, the bowl was supposed to be built in a stepped down recess, but after realizing that the structure would be too unstable to support the weight of the framework, Inhouse had to come up with an alternative solution. During a six-week process, a revised plan was put into action. An entire floor level was removed; timber fins were crafted in the newfound space to create the frame; flexible plywood and polystyrene were incorporated to shape the backing; sand [...]

Situated at The Paddocks Shopping Centre in Milnerton, Cape Town, the first branch of pizza concept store First Base opened its doors to the public earlier this year. Offering “fast casual dining” in a quirky yet simple space, the restaurant allows diners to build their own pizza or salad by selecting their ingredients from a range of toppings – ensuring a perfectly-crafted meal, without the fuss. To match this tailored dining experience, First Base commissioned Inhouse Brand Architects to bring their premises to life. With a basic brief to include the principles of honesty, openness and creativity – appealing to the millennial diner – Inhouse Director, Aidan Hart and Senior Designer, Jenine Bruce conceptualised all aspects of the beautiful space. A fast casual restaurant promises a healthier take on fast food, with fewer processed ingredients and more fresh produce. First Base offers the freshest ingredients for their pizzas and salads, along with healthier options like cauliflower bases and a selection of fresh juices. To create a fresh look to match, Inhouse started with a clean “desert” colour palette of muted hues, playfully laid out to create an interesting interior scheme that translates well both by day and night. First Base [...]

Award-winning interior design firm, Inhouse Brand Architects, recently completed the luxurious refurbishment of an Atlantic seaboard apartment on Cape Town’s exclusive Clifton Beach. This dazzling revamp converted an outdated three-bedroom residence into a sleek dream home for a trendy couple – and their two precious pets! The apartment had specific planning issues: the entrance lacked a sense of arrival; the kitchen completely closed up the area; and the overuse of curved elements disjointed the space. In response, Inhouse’s Creative Director Aidan Hart, and Senior Designer Jenine Bruce, put a plan in place to revitalize the design. The front door was repositioned in order to create a small entranceway that affords a better sense of arrival by aligning the attention of the visitor to the apartment. This also created a unique space to house some of the couple’s glorious artworks. A camera lens peephole is fashioned into the door, which pays homage to the clients’ vested interest in photography and the arts. This creative feature is also intended to offer the visitor an exclusive glimpse into the lives of the owners. Exiting this sleek entrance room, both dark and light design elements fuse to create an extraordinary living area. Timber [...]

Anura Vineyards, a breathtaking wine farm situated in the Cape Winelands, has revealed spankingly modern interiors for its new events venue. Nestled between the towns of Paarl and Stellenbosch, this venue provides more than just idyllic surroundings and award-winning wines – it offers a contemporary design direction in a landscape usually associated with traditional architecture… Having already created the heady contemporary space for the wine farm’s restaurant and brewery, Wagon Trail, it was unsurprising that Inhouse Brand Architects was commissioned to design the new building’s interiors. Inhouse was directed by the client to connect the style of the existing restaurant with that of the events space. Set to host a wide range of functions such as weddings, launches and conferences, it was essential that a stylish and inclusive aesthetic was chosen, forming a neutral backdrop for any function. Creative director, Aidan Hart, and senior designer, Brenda Hart (both of whom had previously headed the Wagon Trail project), opted for neutral colours to contrast the venue’s high ceilings already clad by the client in solid Oregon pine. Light-colour porcelain tiles were selected for the flooring, along with a weathered-plaster paint finish, to complement the warm wooden hues and establish a distinctly [...]

Wild Clover Breweries in Stellenbosch is sporting a newly designed restaurant, brewery and deli that perfectly match the taste and charm of the brand’s celebrated home-brewed beer. The design displays a heady contemporary aesthetic that cohesively ties the restaurant, brewery and deli areas together while also reflecting the brewery’s personality: stylish, yet accessible; sophisticated, but fun! Inhouse Brand Architects was the design firm of choice due to its expert conceptualization skills and long list of successful hospitality and retail projects including the recently completed The Butcher Shop & Grill Sandton, Bocca and Wagon Trail Breweries. Inhouse’s Managing Director, Phillip Wyatt, and Associate Director, Moiisha Viasgie, were briefed to infuse the Wild Clover space with an industrial yet homely look-and-feel. It was also important that the brand’s personality play an integral part in the overall execution. The brewery has four signature beers, each named after an animal – the Eagle Weiss Wit, Blind Mole Pils, Double Owl Ale and Black Dog Porter – and each brings its own sense of character and eccentricity to the brand. The central focus of the space is no doubt the brewery itself. This room is sheathed in glass, allowing guests to view the beer-making process, [...]

Inhouse Brand Architects has constructed a sleek, masculine image for the corporate offices of the Berman Brothers Group (BBG) – a leading property development firm in Cape Town. The design concept sees raw construction materials transformed into signature elements that pay homage to BBG’s very own building blocks. When asked to design the new Sea Point offices for BBG, Inhouse Brand Architects took the bulk of its design references from the origins of BBG’s success in the building industry – its raw materials. Basic construction elements such as reinforced steel, exposed concrete and rebars have all been reimagined into iconic statements in a decidedly masculine space. The overall effect is sophisticated and startling for its design ingenuity. Extremely high-end finishes serve to contrast with and elevate raw construction elements, creating an impressive sense of cohesion. The client’s brief was to develop a world-class interior that both reflected the BBG brand and accommodated the company’s various needs. The wishlist included well-appointed private offices for the owners, Paul and Saul Berman; a large, open-plan seating area for staff; informal meeting spaces; private meeting rooms; and business lounge arrangements. For Inhouse Creative Director Aidan Hart, the project was an exciting challenge not only [...]

From October 2 to 11, 16 teenage girls from South Africa and the United States traveled from Cape Town to the Kalahari Desert on the second Rock Girl Road Trip. The girls interviewed girls and women along the way, documenting their lives through radio and photography, and kept blogs about their journey. They also visited community radio stations, sending out Public Service Announcements and messages of support to girls in places far off the beaten track. With little to no cell service or access to services, the girls in the Northern Cape have no way to share their stories or expose the challenges that they face. Rock Girl reached out to girls in Matjiesfontein, Upington, Calvinia, and Springbok, learning about the lack of high schools, youth programmes, job opportunities and about teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, and sexual and physical violence. “Once we heard these girls’ stories,” said Audery February, one of the Rock Girls on the trip, “we realized that we had to share our own stories and Rock Girl helped us feel safe enough to do so.” On the last night of this epic trip, over half of the Rock Girls told of their own physical and sexual abuse by family members, of growing up in impoverished single and no [...]
