The true mark of an artist is their ability to evolve – to expand their concepts and widen their scope in the quest for new vehicles of expression for their vision. When Adam Hoets, Creative Director and founder of willowlamp, conceived his most recent collection of pieces for the brand, it was with the idea of increasing his repertoire to include different slants on his first foundational pieces. “The way people live these days, few of them have room for extraneous objects, and so what is in a space needs to count. I therefore decided to focus my attention on some fabulous works of art,” says Hoets. The Crystal Mandala falls into this category. The Mandala theme has become something of a hallmark for Hoets, whose fascination with sacred geometry and the forms inherent in nature have inspired much of his work. Taking elements from the original designs – their strong geometric influence and graphic silhouettes – the Crystal Mandala develops these concepts further and streamlines them into something more dynamic. “Geometry is how nature is structured, so the more perfect a geometric construct the closer it gets to mirroring nature in its purest abstract form,” says Hoets. The key [...]

Lighting not only shifts to fall in line with the major new directions for homeware, it also updates according to advances in technology and materials. As an industry leader, Adam Hoets, Creative Director of chandelier and art lighting company willowlamp, keeps abreast of the constantly changing face of lighting around the world. Here he shares his insights into a few of the functions and features that will impact the global face of lighting from now into 2020. Willowlamp is one of the first local lighting brands to have participated in the illustrious biannual Euroluce fair – the world’s preeminent platform for lighting designers to exhibit their work – as part of Milan Design Week. Hoets spent some time surveying the show and noted a few consistent threads running through the event. “While there’s always room for variety and uniqueness, you do see certain themes coming up repeatedly,” he says. Here are some of the standout concepts designers explored through lighting this year. Au naturel A pervading theme was the influence of nature on the designs. From fanciful flowers to more obscure references, the natural world serves as inspiration. Nemo launched a powerful LED task light called Bird, which balances [...]

International architecture firm SAOTA opens LIFE SPACE LIFE in Zurich, Switzerland this month. More than just a showcase of the award-winning firm’s work, the exhibition explores the synthesis of these core ideas within the work that has established SAOTA as an integral part of the global architectural landscape. LIGHT. The energy that is crucial to human life is also the force that renders form, allowing the observer to perceive colour, texture and space. SPACE. The manipulation of space and the definition of the sequence in which it is experienced has always been one of the architect’s primary tools. SAOTA’s architecture blends and shares space, blurring the division between elements; be it internal or external, sometimes extending to the horizon, or to the sky, to create buildings that invite a powerfully emotive response. LIFE. SAOTA creates architecture that understands human needs extend beyond just the requirement for shelter. They are stages for entertaining, for sharing, for rest, for families and for contemplation. LIGHT SPACE LIFE offers a view into the thinking of an architectural practice that is relentlessly questioning the sense of and what it means to live today. About SAOTA SAOTA, a leading firm of architects, is driven by the [...]

Part of Adam Hoets’ most recent range of pendants and chandeliers, the Love Clover collection is a whimsical take on the striking similarity between the silhouette of a clover and the shape of a heart. Playing off the folklore of luck that surrounds this petite plant, each of the four distinctive designs in the range conveys the sense of magic associated with finding an elusive four-leaf clover. Founder and Creative Director Adam Hoets was inspired to create the range during a walk in the mountains when he and his wife came across a field of clovers, the beauty and serendipity of this discovery prompting her to suggest Adam form a design around the moment. ‘Since that day, she has encouraged me to use the shape of the four-leaf clover in my work. In a way a tribute to her, the range was initially meant to comprise a single design, but Adam found the motif lent itself to further permutations and expanded it to three pendants and a chandelier. The challenge came in when trying to capture the feeling of joy associated with the memory, while still instilling a sense of sophistication in the designs. ‘As sweet as four-leaf clovers are, it took me a while to translate them into three-dimensional objects that were [...]

willowlamp’s citrus-inspired statement piece Known primarily for its signature large-scale art pieces, willowlamp’s most recent designs were conceived to cater to smaller spaces and offer the same design impact in a more versatile way. ‘I decided that the new collection needed to include beautiful and sculptural lighting designs that were accessible to a wider audience – not everyone who wants a statement piece has the space for something on the larger end of the scale,’ says Adam Hoets, Founder and Creative Director of willowlamp. For these new smaller pieces he looked around him for cues, the result of which is a collection of forms inspired by the exciting design capacity of nature. The A-Peal pendant is proof that creative impetus can be found in even the most commonplace of objects. The inspiration behind this particular design was the simple everyday beauty of a naartjie peel – the irregular rind of the peeled fruit inspiring the playful curved shape. The design process too was organic. ‘While we were working on the piece in the factory I noticed how when the chains were cut and dropped down they created another tier, so we decided to do two versions – a single and [...]
