Shafina Jaffer describes herself as a meditative artist who sees art as an articulation of spirituality. She recently exhibited a series of paintings inspired by the creation of the universe, at the Jaffer Modern art gallery in Green Point, Cape Town. Her solo presentation was part of the ‘Does This Resonate With You?’ exhibition, which ran from 3 June to 24 July 2021. Through this work, Jaffer sought to convey the role of God and science in creation in a naturalistic way – to transcend religious mechanisms and encourage a conversation around spiritual pluralism and cultural diversity. Jaffer is currently in the exploration stage of her art career, and this body of work represents the evolution of her journey so far. Her presentation offered the viewer the opportunity to engage with the work of an artist in the process of self-discovery. Setting the tone for the exhibition, the multimedia artwork entitled Eye of Creation was displayed as a separate, standalone piece. With its use of dark tones and fiery coppers and reds, this piece was the one of boldest of the series.
The opening of the new Jaffer Modern art gallery in Green Point, Cape Town comes at a time when human connection and congregation are sought after but limited due to social distancing. The gallery has responded to the times by mounting an inaugural exhibition entitled GATHERING: A Community of Portraits and offering visitors the option of private, one-on-one guided walkabouts that are free of charge. GATHERING: A Community of Portraits was curated with the intention of exploring our deep desire to commune and to showcase the diversity, cultures and commonalities of the African continent. Expect to be captivated by a plethora of intriguing portraits selected by guest curator, Margie Murgatroyd. The multiplicity and diversity of artistic voices creates a variety of avenues and perspectives to be explored and discovered. Private gallery tours will offer insight into these perspectives while allowing for personal interpretation of the works and interaction with the guest curator. It is a wonderful opportunity to delve into the alchemy of curating an exhibition and simultaneously see the concept realised. The private walkabouts offer the opportunity to uncover the narrative of the exhibition through its various themes. From the importance of cattle to humans, to gender, identity, belonging [...]

Over 80 portraits form the opening show at the new Jaffer Modern art gallery in Green Point, Cape Town and these proverbial “windows into the soul” are set to captivate viewers. Entitled Gathering: A Community of Portraits the exhibition showcases the many faces of Africa. “This first exhibition aims to showcase a diverse outpouring of creativity,” says the show’s guest curator Margie Murgatroyd of Africa Nova. After seeking out artists from across the continent and looking beyond, to the African diaspora, Murgatroyd has selected works hailing from as far afield Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria and right across South Africa, from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng. As a result, the new show makes for fascinating viewing. The works on the show are wide-ranging, but are linked by a central theme. According to gallery director Shafina Jaffer: “The theme refers to the deep human need to congregate and the desire to commune. It is about our diversity, cultures and common humanity.” Gathering opened to the public on 21 December 2020 and runs until 28 February 2021. Expect to see anything from painting to photography to sculpture. The artists featured include South African Masters such as Cecile Skotnes and Peter Clarke and contemporary artists such as [...]
