As the first fine-art physical NFT gallery in South Africa, USURPA lives up to its namesake — ‘usurp’ means to take a position of power or importance by force — by staking its claim as the bold new name in African art. On Thursday 4 May 2023, the USURPA Gallery in Riviera, Johannesburg, opened The New Medium group exhibition, a unique intersection of technology and fine art featuring twelve South African artists – Seth Pimentel, Baba Tjeko, Naledi Modupi, Sinalo Ngcaba, Mncedi Madolo, Nene Mahlangu, Mark Draws, vonMash, Oliver Pohorille, Terence Maluleke, Samurai Farai and Navel Seakamela. NFTs (non-fungible tokens, or digital assets based on blockchain technology) may not be what you associate with fine art, and yet, at its core, an NFT is just a digital certificate of ownership of art — just as you could own a one-of-a-kind physical painting such as the ‘Mona Lisa’, therefore an NFT is the ownership of a piece of digital fine art. The provenance of each work can be captured on the blockchain, and secured through individual smart codes. USURPA has taken the somewhat intimidating concept of digital art from the constraints of computer or phone screens into a [...]

Copenhagen Cartel is thrilled to announce the opening of its newest retail stores in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The Danish sustainable luxury fashion brand focusing on swimwear and activewear is expanding its international reach with a pop-up store at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town and a store opening soon in Johannesburg. Copenhagen Cartel is one cartel that’s made up of good guys, and they’re working hard to achieve the truly admirable goal of saving the ocean. Discarded fishing nets continue to float in the ocean’s currents, killing fish, turtles, whales, dolphins, sharks, seals, birds and other marine creatures. Copenhagen Cartel contributes to reducing this silent killer in our seas by creating bathing suits and sportswear using recycled nylon made from recovered nylon waste such as waste nets collected from harbours and fishing industries preventing the nets from being discarded into our oceans as well as pre-consumer fabric scraps. This ECONYL® regenerated nylon yarn is spun together with elastane to create a soft, stretchy material that retains its shaping effect when you move in it. (The company has also created an innovative and durable OCN WEED Collection, made of 30% seaweed and 70% organic cotton – seaweed, ‘the bamboo [...]

With incredible design projects such as curating Littlegig 24H Festival and editing a major decor magazine under her belt, Bielle Bellingham’s next project has been unveiled: Decorex Africa 2022. Bellingham will steer the Decorate section of the Cape Town and Joburg shows and 100% Design Africa, together with the contribution of esteemed local architect Theo Bothma, who will curate the Build section of the shows. When asked about the “why” of her involvement with RX Africa’s dynamically recharged exhibition platform, Bellingham enthuses: “I am beyond passionate about the role of art and design as catalysts for positive change. Having spent the majority of my career serving the one percent who can afford exceptional design, I now want to champion making decor and design relevant and accessible to everyone – in a format that reinvigorates, reorganises and commercialises change in the industry.” On the forefront of decor, design and lifestyle trends for almost three decades, Decorex Africa is poised to ignite the country’s top-performing cities – Johannesburg and Cape Town – with fresh vision and purpose. Using the radical power of curation and combining exceptional content with hard-working mechanics, the brand is transforming into a hybrid marketplace and growth accelerator in [...]

The RMB Turbine Art Fair marks the third stop of the travelling exhibition of the PPC Imaginarium Awards, after showing in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Lwandiso Njara envisions the Engineering the New Jerusalem Lizamore & Associates showcases a solo exhibition by Lwandiso Njara; Engineering the New Jerusalem II. This body of work is a reflection of his own understanding of the renewal of identity. The exhibition is sponsored by PPC and Stuttaford van Lines and opens on 31 May 2018 at 18:00. Growing-up in a traditional Xhosa household, Lwandiso Njara’s Catholic schooling by nuns from India and Switzerland exposed him to different ideologies and technologies. In Engineering the New Jerusalem II, Njara depicts his understanding of a changing identity – as influenced by his upbringing and education. This body of takes form in pen, graphite & charcoal drawings and sculptures in PPC cement, resin, animal bone and steel. The artist portrays a cross-pollinated sense of identity which emerges from the physical hybridity of his sculptures and drawings. “I believe that my work resembles or explores the new contemporary robotic or technological African urban identity” says the artist. He often blatantly merges polarities in one body through using the lamb, the goat and the cow fused with mechanical gears and engines, all acting as signifiers for the artist’s own hybrid sense of identity. This exhibition opens on Thursday [...]

99 Juta is a new development in Braamfontein. This refurbishment is the collaborative vision of property developers Consolidated Urban, Play Braamfontein and product designers Dokter and Misses. It is conveniently situated in the popular neighbourhood of Braamfontein, close to the Gautrain, major circulation routes and local amenities. Architects, Local Studio headed up the refurbishment with interiors and fittings designed by by Dokter and Misses who’s showroom occupies one half of the first floor. This new design-focused address’ pink and emerald green tiled facade is sure to turn heads. Two colourful inner courtyards flanked by high-rises provide sanctuary inside one of Joburg’s stand-out neighbourhoods. Transparent partitioning connects eight spaces over four floors, optimises natural light and encourages visitors to explore by means of the original steel and timber staircase that remains intact. 99 is the new home to local product designers Joe Paine, Mash.T Design Studio, Monique Vee and The Urbanative. Alongside these permanent fixtures a program of design-centric pop-ups will run; currently featured are wood-masters Houtlander, Common Threads a textile exhibition curated by The Ninevites and ceramic showcase titled 99½ Vases.
From the organisers of the highly-acclaimed timber trade expo, WoodEX for Africa, a new, specialised trade expo targeted at the residential, commercial and industrial flooring and decking markets will soon make its debut. The Deck & Flooring Expo, co-located with WoodEX for Africa 2018, is set to host its inaugural instalment from 11-13 July at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg. As the first and only expo in decking and flooring in Africa, the Deck & Flooring Expo 2018 offers exhibitors the opportunity to bring their products, services and technologies to a highly specialised and tuned-in audience that has been cultivated for over six years. Stephan Jooste, Deck & Flooring Expo organiser, comments, “We have deep roots in the timber industry and detected a niche in the market for manufacturers and suppliers of decking and flooring materials, from raw timber, composite and WPC decking, all the way to coatings and sealants, to have better access to their customers and their markets.” “Our market research showed that there is no real trade expo on the continent that serves the decking and flooring markets in this way, which is why we are proud to announce the launch of the Deck & [...]

When the owner of a private aviation business first sat down at a small, non-descript coffee shop in Kyalami, Johannesburg, he certainly never imagined that this would one day become the site of his very own Café Hemingway’s, the inspirational foodie establishment he founded in 2015. But when that little hole-in-the-wall café Jonathan Wolpe had been working from for years was on the verge of closing, he bought it and turned it into the acclaimed artisanal bistro, bar, pâtisserie and private events venue that it is today. Café Hemingway’s, as the reference to the great American writer Ernest Hemingway suggests, incorporates literary, cultural and historical tributes into its customer experience. The interior, designed by the eatery’s Creative Director Ingrid Irsigler in collaboration with Philippa Rose-Tite from Purple Raindrop, is the first indicator of this tribute, being reminiscent of both prohibition-era New York City and France during the Belle Époque. “The purchase of the café came shortly after a trip to New York City and a stay at the luxurious, but loft-style Soho House”, explains Irsigler. “The entire period in which Hemingway lived was also an inspiration. [F Scott] Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, the entire ragtag bunch of literary stars [...]
