Krone’s newly released site-specific vintage is part of a pioneering series that explores the most outstanding sites for Cap Classique. In 2016 Krone released South Africa’s first site-specific Cap Classique to further underscore its commitment to making vintage-only bottle-fermented sparkling wines. A pure expression of mountain-born chardonnay, the Krone Kaaimansgat Blanc de Blancs 2016 hailed from the iconic Kaaimansgat vineyard near Villiersdorp. The newly released 2018 vintage also springs from this high-altitude blind valley, situated 700-metres above sea level. “Producing a vintage wine from a single vineyard is the purest expression of transparency and authenticity. It is an exercise in courage and passion, leaving no place to hide as the quality of the grapes and the skill of the winemaker are in full view,” says Rudiger Gretschel, Krone’s cellarmaster. “Kaaimansgat is a site of extremes. The old, unirrigated vines are planted on the steep foothills of the mountains. In winter the mountains encircling the vineyards are covered in snow, in summer the day temperatures are warm and sunny, the nights cool to cold – ideal conditions for later ripening of the grapes, producing wines with a strong acidity at full ripeness and low pH, perfect for making superlative Cap Classique,” [...]

Africa has long fused the worlds of spirituality, ancestry and creativity to aid communication with the non-material, divine realm. These practices continue to this day despite colonial incursions and the influence of modern western modes. This rich seam of history and culture is mined by today’s African artists. Their work both affirms and interrogates the traditions and heritage within which they situate themselves, and in so doing, they evolve contemporary art on the Continent. There are seven noteworthy young artists whose work is in this vein, who are currently showing pieces as part of the Tulbagh-based show of 40 young artists, 40 under 40: Asemahle Ntlonti, Sahlah Davids, Ofentse ‘King Debs’ Letebele, Sepideh Mehraban, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Scott Eric Williams and Stephane Edith Conradie. Just one hour and 30 minutes’ drive from Cape Town, you’ll find the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen Estate, the home of Krone Cap Classique, where 40 under 40 is located. The exhibition, which is presented by KRONE X WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery, runs until 28 February 2022. One of the hottest cultural events on the summer arts calendar, 40 under 40 invites visitors to commune with the ancestors, and contemplate past and present, as they wander through the beautiful [...]

“40 under 40“ is a hotbed of discourse and delight, featuring 40 progressive artists under the age of 40. The exhibition runs at Tulbagh’s historic Twee Jonge Gezellen Estate, the home of Krone Cap Classique, until 28 February 2022 and is presented by KRONE X WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery. The diverse works speak of new forms of expression. Participating artists hail from across the African continent, some of whom have already exhibited at museum level, while others show work for the first time in a gallery setting. Placed together, they represent a generation determined to flip the script and manifest new ways of making and being in the world. Of the 40 names selected, five hail from South Africa’s sub-tropical province and the strong KwaZulu-Natal contingent is of particular interest. The vibrant work on show denotes the bright multiculturalism of the region with its melange of surfer culture, Hindu and Zulu influences. This makes its presence felt in bold palates and assured brush strokes as evident in the work of Kylie Wentzel, Sthenjwa Luthuli, Dada Khanyisa, Mia Chaplin and Callan Grecia (the latter three currently reside in Cape Town and George respectively). “Rickshaw Cowboy“, a large acrylic painting on canvas by 28-year-old [...]

KRONE X WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery presents 40 under 40 from 25 September 2021 to 28 February 2022. This intriguing and provocative presentation of 60 diverse works from 40 young artists – all of whom are under the age of 40 – will be installed across seven indoor and outdoor sites at the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen Estate, the home of Krone Cap Classique, in Tulbagh. The six-month-long show represents a celebratory moment on the contemporary art calendar, drawing on rising and established talents from across the African continent and beyond, making it one of the not-to-be-missed cultural events of the South African Spring/Summer season. Selected works are placed together in conversation and were created largely during the pandemic. Collectively, they address a world which demands renewed negotiations of intimacy and sociality. These responses span painting, photography, sculpture, murals, video, mixed media, and installation. The artists – some of whom are up-and-coming, while others are already well established – represent a generation determined to flip the script and manifest new ways of making and being in the world. According to the exhibition organisers: “Through their pieces, the participating artists reflect on the one hand, a deep care for images which bind us to history [...]
