Astonishingly, only 0.5% of land in South Africa is forested. And within this, our increasingly rare mistbelt forests occupy an even tinier fraction. On the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal lies one such special place. Ferncliffe. It is the precious remnant of a biome that originally stretched over 2000 hectares. In a largely dry country, Ferncliffe is blessed with high rainfall. Humid, and swathed in mist, it is a magical tangle of vegetation at the edge of the city’s urban sprawl. Although Ferncliffe is small, it still contains an astonishing diversity of life, ranging from large mammals like bushpig and caracal, to unusual millipedes and amphibians, a species of carnivorous snail, and the enormous monkey-catching crowned eagle. It harbours unexpected, often secretive creatures that dwell in, and depend upon, the profusion of indigenous plants that grow there. Unfortunately, a tide of alien plants is threatening the ecosystem’s survival. This environmental degradation is an enormous problem. But you can assist Ferncliffe forest wilding to restore the biodiversity of this mist-drenched wonder. To help fund the registered NPO’s vital work, local fine artist Connor Cullinan is producing a series of original art prints that are sold online as open editions via https://ferncliffe.org.
The world’s grittiest horse race, Race the Wild Coast (RTWC), was won on Friday, 25 October 2019 when Australian rider Emma Manthorpe crossed the finish line at Kei Mouth, Transkei, ahead of 13 other international competitors, claiming victory. The dramatic multi-stage 350km race, sponsored by KTC and supported by Jack Black Beer, was the third iteration of the race, held on the Eastern Cape’s iconic, unspoilt Wild Coast. It took place from 19-27 October this year, with entrants from as far afield as the USA, Hungary, Australia, Switzerland, UAE, France, Ireland, South Africa and the UK. There were two riders from South Africa. Seven male and seven female riders competed against one another. According to race organiser and co-founder Barry Armitage of Rockethorse Racing: “We congratulate Emma – as well as all the participants – and recognise their grit, tenacity, and exceptional horsemanship. The race is always gruelling, despite the fact that the Wild Coast is a paradise of a location.” RTWC kicked off in Port Edward with riders navigating highly technical terrain that consisted of rocky paths and cliff-tops, beaches, rivers and estuaries, and wild vegetation – often in adverse weather conditions. Entrants covered 80km a day and the [...]

This La Lucia beach house perfectly balances luxury and comfort with its uncomplicated spaces. Situated on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast just south of Umhlanga, the house is gently nestled between protected milkwood trees and enjoys beautiful ocean views – both of which inspired the design. Bronze aluminium sliding screens cocoon the house and offers protection from the elements as well as providing a unique the signature look for of the building “The surrounding beauty of the environment inspired so much of the design. As designers we are passionate about creating spaces that reflect both the location and our clients – that is how life-enhancing spaces are crafted.” – Mark Rielly, ARRCC Director. ENTRANCE A sense of arrival is created by two milkwood trees flanking the entrance. A floating timber step platform and pergola lead towards the front door of the home. Upon entering, the panorama is only revealed as one reaches the doublevolume hallway – the aligned timber slat cladded ceilings drawing the eye to the seascape ahead. Ocean views are framed perfectly by the screens that envelope the building. “The owners wanted the project to epitomise the spirit of a contemporary beach house with a sense of sophistication.
