Under the helm of founder and creative director Adam Hoets, South African bespoke lighting design company Willowlamp, commissioned by talented project designers, the Rockwell Group, has created two monumental theatrical lighting installations for Cathédrale, the latest Las Vegas restaurant from the award-winning hospitality group Tao that opened on 1 May 2023. At this second iteration of the Cathédrale franchise — the flagship restaurant is based in East Village, New York — Willowlamp was tasked with interpreting and reimagining the design intent of the original restaurant for the newest addition’s ceiling. One particular feature of the original design that served as a point of reference for Hoets was the wire-mesh ceiling installation created by Italian artist Eduardo Tresoldi. Cathedrale Bar Lounge. Las Vegas The initial inspiration behind the flagship restaurant was the Fillmore East, a Yiddish theatre built in the 1920s which then became a concert hall dubbed ‘the Church of Rock and Roll’ that hosted acts like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. With such a historically-rich inspiration, the flagship restaurant’s interior design conveys themes of theatre, glamour, church and rock. This idea of a theatrical rock venue inside a glamorous church was another of the driving themes that informed Hoets’s [...]

Thabisa Mjo has done it again with an incredible new collaborative project that focuses on telephone wire weaving. The acclaimed local designer’s latest collection is called Alfred’s Lights, and is a line of striking telephone wire pendants. Mjo worked closely with Elizabeth Joubert of interior design studio, Tin Lab, together with renowned master weaver, Alfred Ntuli – who is known for weaving geometric patterns with telephone wire, and a range of other collaborators to bring the collection to life. Mjo, the founder of Johannesburg-based studio Mash. T Design, has always been adamant that hers is a practice of African storytelling through design. Over the last few years, as her business has grown, she has increasingly sought out collaborations with artisans who use techniques that are quintessentially South African. “For me, arts and crafts, and anything handmade, represent luxury, and my aim is to merge these traditional production methods with forward-thinking design,” she explains. In this instance, telephone wire weaving is a longstanding local artisan practice rooted in the 1960’s, when Zulu night watchmen started weaving scraps of telephone wire around their traditional sticks. The practice became popular among Zulu communities, and today there is great innovation and creativity in the [...]

Situated in Baden, Switzerland, the newly renovated Grand Casino Baden’s PLÜ Restaurant & Lounge strikes the perfect balance between opulence and natural design. Swiss-based interior design company, Atelier West, was commissioned to modernise the interior of PLÜ Restaurant & Lounge in 2020. PLÜ translates directly to ‘plush’ and this is evident as the inspiration for Atelier West, who curated a modern, luxurious space with tastefully chosen design elements. The restaurant is enrobed by floor to ceiling golden-hued curtains which frame the picturesque views of the greenery outside. The lounge area has a metallic-gold wall that houses a sleek fireplace and is surrounded by minimalist yet inviting velvet armchairs. Velvet-tassled cushions sit atop a burnt-orange velvet booth nestled in a corner. The bar area creates a focal piece in the space. Gold screed floors are cleverly mirrored by a gold ceiling. The bar’s semi-circular countertop is covered with gold and complemented with metallic, glass and chrome elements. However, there are clever and subtle nods to nature within this opulent and elegantly designed space. A dark herringbone wooden floor brings grounding to the space. Wooden beams span the ceiling, interspersed with glowing and warming downlighting. Leather ottomans are scattered among the velvet [...]

The true mark of an artist is their ability to evolve – to expand their concepts and widen their scope in the quest for new vehicles of expression for their vision. When Adam Hoets, Creative Director and founder of willowlamp, conceived his most recent collection of pieces for the brand, it was with the idea of increasing his repertoire to include different slants on his first foundational pieces. “The way people live these days, few of them have room for extraneous objects, and so what is in a space needs to count. I therefore decided to focus my attention on some fabulous works of art,” says Hoets. The Crystal Mandala falls into this category. The Mandala theme has become something of a hallmark for Hoets, whose fascination with sacred geometry and the forms inherent in nature have inspired much of his work. Taking elements from the original designs – their strong geometric influence and graphic silhouettes – the Crystal Mandala develops these concepts further and streamlines them into something more dynamic. “Geometry is how nature is structured, so the more perfect a geometric construct the closer it gets to mirroring nature in its purest abstract form,” says Hoets. The key [...]

As an innovator, willowlamp is constantly developing its product range and creating new forms of expression via its lighting installations. Creative Director and founder Adam Hoets’ strength lies not only in the aesthetic beauty of his creations, but in their conceptual gravitas. As such he’s always conscious of offering beauty with a backstory. Historically, willowlamp’s chandeliers have often spoken to a love of the organic, the spiritual, the fantastical and the romantic, and have largely been prompted by forms found in nature. But this is by no means Hoets’ only source of inspiration. As a trained architect, his respect for the built world and innate understanding of geometry give many of his pieces a striking structural impact. It is to this point of departure he looked when formulating his most recent design. Known as Lineal, this new addition to the willowlamp family pays homage to the formality and purity of modern lines. With Lineal, Hoets delves further into the new ground he broke with two strong-lined pieces from the willowlamp 2018 collection, the Geometric Storm and the Link. ‘I think these pieces draw more directly from my background as an architect and my love for modern architecture. They are also [...]

willowlamp’s citrus-inspired statement piece Known primarily for its signature large-scale art pieces, willowlamp’s most recent designs were conceived to cater to smaller spaces and offer the same design impact in a more versatile way. ‘I decided that the new collection needed to include beautiful and sculptural lighting designs that were accessible to a wider audience – not everyone who wants a statement piece has the space for something on the larger end of the scale,’ says Adam Hoets, Founder and Creative Director of willowlamp. For these new smaller pieces he looked around him for cues, the result of which is a collection of forms inspired by the exciting design capacity of nature. The A-Peal pendant is proof that creative impetus can be found in even the most commonplace of objects. The inspiration behind this particular design was the simple everyday beauty of a naartjie peel – the irregular rind of the peeled fruit inspiring the playful curved shape. The design process too was organic. ‘While we were working on the piece in the factory I noticed how when the chains were cut and dropped down they created another tier, so we decided to do two versions – a single and [...]

willowlamp Founder and Creative Director Adam Hoets draws ideas for new designs from all forms and media; enter The WindChime from the 2018 collection. The WindChime concept came to life after Adam watched a film about ninjas. Hoets says the design was one of the fastest-completed that he has ever created. “It took me less than three days. Sometimes I sit on ideas for years, and sometimes they just appear in an instant.” The creative process varies greatly, as do the many different moments that can take an idea to the next level. While Hoets cannot recall the title of the film, one scene in particular made quite an impression, showing an elongated light made of tiered bamboo windchimes, mimicking the shape of the traditional instrument. “I’ve always liked these forms and thought it would be interesting to interpret windchimes in a classic chandelier design.” The WindChime is one of two new chandeliers among the larger statement pieces in this collection, while at least half of the remaining 2018 lights are smaller designs with consideration given to more compact spaces. The WindChime represents what willowlamp has become known for – large, show-stopping pieces that pack a punch. All willowlamp creations [...]

Forming part of award-winning lighting design company willowlamp’s expanding collection of exquisite pendants and chandeliers, the Love Clover range is a suite of charming yet elegant hanging lights that pay homage to the botanical beauty and keepsake; the four-leaf clover. Each of the four distinctive designs in the new range conveys the serendipitous feelings associated with finding a four-leaf clover. According to willowlamp’s Founder and Creative Director, Adam Hoets, the Love Clover range was inspired by a run in the mountain where he and his fiancé [now his wife] happened across fields of clovers. “Since that day, she encouraged me to use the shape of the four-leaf clover in my work.” Baby Love Initially, only one lighting design bearing this distinctive motif was planned, but then Hoets decided to expand the range to three pendants and one chandelier. The challenge came in when trying to capture the sense of joy that is associated with clovers, while still creating sophisticated designs. “As cute and cheerful as four-leaf clovers are, it took me a long time to translate them into three-dimensional objects that were interesting,” Hoets says. “Eventually, through trial and error, the solution presented itself in what is now a four-piece [...]

Award-winning South African lighting design company, willowlamp, has launched an accessible ‘Small Space’ collection, the perfect lighting solution for compact urban spaces. The new pendants vary in design and range from the small Babylove, styled on a four-leaf clover, to the array of Moroccan-style lamps that invoke the beauty of North Africa. Each has been created to hang beautifully in a small home or apartment, whilst still creating the same impact as one of the larger willowlamp statement pieces. “We have enjoyed a great success with our original designs and are still producing our traditional larger installations but we also wanted to expand and create smaller lights that elevate more compact spaces,” Creative Director, Adam Hoets, said of the new collection. “The new designs give clients a level of creativity in their homes as well, the smaller installations can either hang on their own or can be grouped together to produce something entirely unique. We also see this as a great opportunity to move out of the residential market as the smaller pendants would work equally well in a commercial space, such as a restaurant.” The willowlamp success story began with a single simple idea: the willowlamp notch system that [...]
