Design Indaba’s yearly lineup is a highly anticipated event on the creative calendar. Having established itself internationally as one of the premier multidisciplinary programmes in the world, it consistently draws the globe’s luminaries to its stage. But it’s not just inspiration for inspiration’s sake that the conference advocates. With ‘a better world through creativity’ as their guiding principle, founder Ravi Naidoo and his team have continually shown their commitment to positive change through design-led thinking. In line with this powerful impetus, they’ve created a legacy for including speakers in the programme whose work seeks to better the world we live in – whether through technological advances, environmental advocacy, or simply social change that fosters healthier communities. The event can boast star-studded speaker alumni – leaders and achievers in a variety of fields – that constitute the who’s who of international design. Anyone from Thomas Heatherwick to Patricia Urquiola, Tom Dixon, Brian Eno, Yves Behar, Jaime Hayon, and scores of other global luminaries have graced Design Indaba’s stage to share their progressive work in genres as diverse as business innovation, product design, costume design, performance art, architecture, food design – and many more.
99 Juta is a new development in Braamfontein. This refurbishment is the collaborative vision of property developers Consolidated Urban, Play Braamfontein and product designers Dokter and Misses. It is conveniently situated in the popular neighbourhood of Braamfontein, close to the Gautrain, major circulation routes and local amenities. Architects, Local Studio headed up the refurbishment with interiors and fittings designed by by Dokter and Misses who’s showroom occupies one half of the first floor. This new design-focused address’ pink and emerald green tiled facade is sure to turn heads. Two colourful inner courtyards flanked by high-rises provide sanctuary inside one of Joburg’s stand-out neighbourhoods. Transparent partitioning connects eight spaces over four floors, optimises natural light and encourages visitors to explore by means of the original steel and timber staircase that remains intact. 99 is the new home to local product designers Joe Paine, Mash.T Design Studio, Monique Vee and The Urbanative. Alongside these permanent fixtures a program of design-centric pop-ups will run; currently featured are wood-masters Houtlander, Common Threads a textile exhibition curated by The Ninevites and ceramic showcase titled 99½ Vases. Little is known about the building’s history as the original plans had been lost and with it, any record [...]

Would-be jet setters need not check into hip hotels in London, New York, Sydney or Tokyo in order to pick up on the freshest global trends in hospitality design. But they should definitely make a point of checking out this year’s 100% Design South Africa, held in association with Dauphin HumanDesign® Group. The show takes place from 6 to 10 August 2015 at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, alongside Decorex Joburg. Now in its second year, South Africa’s only international design show is again presenting a superbly curated showcase of leaders in the field. A definite highlight, whether for globetrotters or simply armchair travellers with a love of design, is the exhibition 100% Hotel. 100% Hotel is being presented in collaboration with esteemed Johannesburg design business Generation, founded by prominent designer Julia Day some 25 years ago. Invited to showcase “a cutting-edge and unique hotel space”, the Generation team has partnered with iconic Italian furniture brand De Padova. “For our interpretation of a hotel space, we have decided to feature a lobby area,” says Day. “The lobby is an essential part of the overall design because it is the first space that hotel clientele are exposed to.
The best of inspiring South African and international design is set to be showcased at 100% Design South Africa, which takes place from 6 to 10 August 2015 at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, alongside Decorex Joburg. South Africa’s only international design show, 100% Design South Africa, in conjunction with headline sponsor Dauphin HumanDesign® Group, promises to enthrall visitors with its superbly curated displays and a lineup that comprises top global design brands alongside local design stars. Among the highlights of this year’s show is the exhibition, 100 Beautiful Things, which will artfully showcase the creations of 100 different designers working across a variety of platforms. Criteria for selection includes the products having to be made or designed in South Africa, and to be in production in 2015. 100 Beautiful Things is curated by 100% Design South Africa Programme Director Cathy O’Clery, who says the story behind the object is always highly influential when making her selection. Likewise, there are pieces that simply resonate because they “instantly touch the heart”. The purpose of 100 Beautiful Things, O’Clery explains, is to share “the phenomenal array” of design in this country, which is accepted and appreciated at a global [...]
