September is a month of celebration in South Africa. We return to roots, we gather, and we celebrate that which makes us quintessentially South African. South Africa’s heritage is deeply rooted in its distinctiveness. While it is rare for a country to have both a diverse cultural and natural heritage, we find ourselves blessed with both; an abundance of cultures framed within a deep and wide natural and historical context. The cultural diversity that comes from being the Rainbow Nation, set against the backdrop of the Cape Floral Kingdom, Karoo, spectacular coastlines, breathtaking mountain ranges, and awe-inspiring desert regions, gives an unmitigated sense of uniqueness. And with uniqueness, there is also that lingering sense of luxury, of taking part in something that cannot be experienced anywhere else. Interestingly, the new global sense of luxury has shifted away from broad material acquisition towards the attainment of limited editions and one-of-a-kind experiences. The kind that South Africa offers in abundance. Indeed, there are several local luxury brands who have intimately understood this shift, and accordingly, have tapped into South Africa’s heritage and placed it at the core of their brand proposition. They have recognised our country’s exceptionalism and manifested it into ultra-premium [...]

Luckily, South Africa is blessed with epic, world-class tourist destinations, the kind that attracts a steady flow of foreign travelers under “normal” circumstances. Fortunate locals are spoilt for choice when it comes to planning a local breakaway. One such famed attraction is South Africa’s verdant Garden Route – a spectacular stretch of coastline on the eastern shores of the country that is peppered with must-see sights and hotspots. Spectacular views, misty indigenous forests, nature reserves, seaside resorts offering excellent cafés, curio shops, and fresh seafood, and a wide selection of outdoor adventure activities, are just a few of the reasons this east coast trail is so well-loved. The charming coastal towns of Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Wilderness and Sedgefield are all a short drive from George Airport, approximately six hours drive from Cape Town and twelve hours drive from Johannesburg – perfect for a long weekend or an extended stay. But the veritable jewel in the Garden Route crown is undoubtedly Plettenberg Bay, affectionately known as “Plett”. It is not hard to understand why, thanks to Plett’s incredible natural surroundings, beautiful and pristine beaches, plentiful marine life, leisure pursuits, adventure activities, wildlife sanctuaries and luxury accommodation destinations. When staying in Plett, [...]

The international fashion brand, renowned for its biannual collections of luxury scarves, has launched a range of fine leather accessories. Lalela Scarf has now extended its existing product range to include gorgeous leather accessories that show off inspiring artwork created by at-risk youth who participate in NPO Lalela’s arts education programme. The new leather range includes handbags that double as clutches and bright, funky luggage tags. The eye-catching pieces are practical and functional – the handbags can be toted around via a stylish metal handle, or can be folded and kept under one’s arm as a clutch. The size is large enough to fit an iPad yet elegant enough to take to a dinner party. With affordability in mind, Lalela Scarf has also created a line of luggage tags perfect for customers of all price ranges. The luggage tags have a nifty airplane motif and are sure to stand out on airport carousels. Initially, the brand was looking to create something less expensive for corporate gifting; however, the luggage tags became so popular that they were added to the line. “They make great housewarming gifts, perfect stocking fillers, and are a delight for travellers as they are bright and fun,” [...]

Glamorous new hotel Labotessa on Cape Town’s heritage Church Square has just opened to the public, along with a brand-new outlet of Claremont “café crush”, Starlings. Labotessa, an elegant seven-suite space within a charming historical envelope, embodies the essence of what a boutique hotel ought to be – intimate, considered and personal. Starlings matches this locale in both personality and panache and is set to become the city’s new go-to for a quick brekkie for the early birds or a lengthy lunch looking out on the “piazza”… Given the hotel’s prime position in the CBD – close to a multitude of cafes, restaurants and bars – and considering the fact that guests (both local and international, business and leisure) would want to explore the area during their stay, the duo decided to offer a pulled-back dining element in favour of suites that allowed for in-room snacking, and an inhouse restaurant that catered to a daily neighbourhood crowd as well as hotel guests. Most importantly, they wanted to focus on a level of quality in line with the hotel’s beautiful interiors and service standards. Du Plessis’ vision for how guests would use and experience the space included casual dining that had [...]

The Southern Suburbs’ much-loved breakfast destination, Starlings Cafe, has set its sights on the Cape Town CBD and will soon open a city-centric hotspot within LABOTESSA (www.labotessa.com), a new luxury hotel like none other. Opening in August 2019, LABOTESSA is a unique hospitality offering boasting just seven distinctively appointed luxury suites with one of the largest penthouses in the city centre at their apex. It is the only hotel on historic Church Square in Cape Town, within reach of the monumental Groote Kerk and the Slave Lodge set beneath the unmistakable mountainscape of Lion’s Head. LABOTESSA itself occupies a landmark building: a 17th century townhouse that has been lovingly restored. It is at this auspicious destination – at 5 Church Square – that the new branch of Starlings Café will make its nest. The first Starlings Café in Claremont occupies a Victorian cottage on Belvedere Road and is famed for beautiful breakfasts and bountiful bakes that are served against a backdrop of charming, nostalgia-driven décor with a contemporary bent. Fine, seasonal ingredients are key and ethically sourced products, such as free-range meat and eggs, feature. Jams are homemade by Margaret; the cheese is naturally matured Montagu cheddar made from unpasteurised [...]

The darling of Plettenberg Bay hospitality, the eponymously named The Plettenberg, has updated its old world glam in a recent refurbishment. The five-star Liz McGrath Collection hotel has overhauled its newly renamed Garden Room, Blue Room and Villas to embrace contemporary cachet whilst retaining tasteful charm. Situated on a rocky headland, The Plettenberg is gifted with the most spectacular site overlooking the ocean and offers the best 270-degree view in the bay. It was the site itself that provided the inspiration for the new interior direction. One of the main aims of the revamp was to bring the Garden Room and Blue Room up to the minute and create continuity throughout, as the previous style of these rooms was not in keeping with the rest of the hotel. The interior redesign was headed by the daughters of the late and much-loved Liz McGrath, Lesley Kelly and Susan Nathan, who co-own the hotel along with their brother Michael McGrath, the Liz McGrath Collection’s current chairperson. Lesley and Susan add their aesthetic style to all three of the group’s hotels, including the Marine in Hermanus and the Relais & Châteaux Cellars-Hohenort in Constantia. The duo has had extensive experience in interior design through [...]

Kelly Wearstler who is best known for her distinctive, sophisticated and luxurious designs, offers some insight into the inspirations behind her recently launched rug collection with The Rug Company. Where do you find your design inspiration? Fashion, art, architecture, Mother Nature. Inspiration is everywhere. The first place I go when I want to get inspired is my library at home – it houses over 2,000 books on everything from fashion and jewellery design to landscape architecture. I collect vintage and out of print titles. What was your first design project? A residential project. I started out with one client. I was referred by a friend and hired to design one room in their home and slowly grew my business through word of mouth. It was 1995 when I founded my studio. My first hotel project was The Avalon, a boutique hotel in Beverly Hills. Tell us about your new designs for The Rug Company. My rug designs are a mixology of classic and modern, from patterns found in nature – the striations of a shoreline, the natural veining of marble – to architectural and graphic art. My new designs are hand-painted art pieces done in my studio. How do you [...]
