Over 100 000 visitors were treated to an outstanding display of South African design, sponsored by Nando’s, at the recent Milan Design Week, held from 9-14 April 2019. The international food franchise supported a collective of six local designers who exhibited their work at Ventura Future Base in the Tortona District as part of a striking installation entitled Sacrosanct. The exhibition was curated by Thabisa Mjo of Mash T Design Studio, with mentorship from Tracy Lee Lynch, Creative Director of the Nando’s Design Programme. Ventura Future is a platform for bright young stars from across the globe, offering the best of contemporary design from a mix of international academies, designers, brands and labels. Mash T was invited to exhibit as part of Venture Futura by its organizer and curator Magriet Vollenberg of Organisation in Design. “It was a big success,” Vollenberg says. “We sold over 26 000 multi-entrance tickets and over 90 000 individual tickets to Ventura Future” during the fair. Sacrosanct was viewed by an impressive guest list including international media, interior designers who travelled to Milan for the annual fair and visiting dignitaries such as the South African Consul-General in Milan, Italy, Ms TSD Nxumalo. The latter came to see [...]

willowlamp will take part in Euroluce at the Salone del Mobile for the first time this April. Renowned on the South African decor scene for its design-forward and inspiring creations, the company has previously showcased at African and Middle Eastern trade shows. Now expanding its reach into Europe’s illustrious design elite, willowlamp will be introducing the Milanese audience to a careful curation of its most striking designs. As the first South African designer lighting company to show its pieces on this prestigious platform, willowlamp cements its status as an innovator and market leader. Founder and creative director Adam Hoets studied architecture which gives his works a complexity and sophistication of structure and concept. ‘My journey began as an architect, which has been invaluable in shaping my ‘design’ mind. I decided on architecture because my reasoning was that I could be an architect and also be an artist but not the other way round,’ he says. Hoets made the transition from architecture to lighting design in 2005 due, in part, to his goal in developing a marketable design-related product. The variety of projects that Hoets has overseen since the inception of willowlamp is evidence of his confluence between architectural and artistic [...]

Sacrosanct, supported by Nando’s will see six SA designers boast their afro-contempo designs to the world International food franchise Nando’s, which has outlets in over 35 countries, is adding a new item to its menu of exciting social investment projects that accompany the spicy Portuguese-style flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken so loved by consumers the world over. This April, Nando’s will support a collective of six South African designers at a showcase from 9-14 April 2019 at Ventura Future Base in the Tortona District as part of the annual Milan Design Week. Sacrosanct was conceptualised by Thabisa Mjo of Mash T Design Studio, who approached Nando’s for sponsorship support after she was invited to exhibit as part of Venture Future Base. Mjo also designed the Sacrosanct installation architecture – an unusual structure that takes the form of a room-sized pod extrapolated from a Mash T Design Studio server. Visitors will need to enter Sacrosanct in order to experience the array of products on exhibition, which Mjo is curating. Mjo enjoys an ongoing collaborative relationship with Nando’s, having previously won the Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search Lighting Design Competition in 2016 for her Tutu 2.0 light. The pendant has since been exhibited [...]

REVEALED: CAESARSTONE X SNARKITECTURE 2018 The annual prestige of Milan Design Week is around the corner. It’s the affair that sees design norms challenged and Caesarstone experimenting with their dynamic surfaces in collaborative projects. In 2017 we welcomed a folkloric playground by Jaime Hayon, and before that Tom Dixon brought us the Elemental Kitchens. This year we delve into an offering by New York design moguls, Snarkitecture, titled ‘Altered States’, which has everyone intrigued… Centered around today’s kitchen must-have, Snarkitecture have created four, highly conceptual takes on the kitchen island. Using Caesarstone’s surfaces as the golden thread, each one utilizes a different Caesarstone colour. Crafted with reference to water in various states, the islands take form with stratified layers that resemble natural topography. Each one will be exhibited in Milan as part of Fuorisalone, in large-scale. “The theme of the kitchen island resonated with us from the very beginning because of the understanding that the kitchen is the social hub of the house.” – Snarkitecture partner and co-founder Alex Mustonen. The venue that will home the collaboration is an outstanding example of industrial chic, and has an energy like no other. The Future Establish Hotel, Corso di Porta Romana 10, seen below: While creating environments and experiences that are designed [...]
