Walter Train – Peke Boo Screen The search for the country’s hottest screen designs is nearing completion as Nando’s HYD announces its top five finalists for 2024. Kirsty Moolman, Tanisha Neill, Simphiwe Mlambo, Mpumelelo Nyuswa and Walter Train will now participate in an intensive ‘Laboratory of Learning’ before one stand-out candidate is selected to receive ongoing mentorship and business coaching. Facilitated by Clout/SA, the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search is a bi-annual staple on South Africa’s design calendar. This time around, entrants were invited to answer a ‘Screen Dream’ brief to create a screen or room divider that is not only relevant and functional, but also decorative and distinct, adding to the overall ambiance of a Nando’s restaurant. Tanisha Neill Entries closed in June 2024 and just fewer than 200 emerging designers from across the country submitted screen designs for initial consideration. A shortlist of 10 promising designer-makers was selected at the beginning of August 2024, namely, Nicky van den Aardweg, Josh and Pia McFindlay, Margo Kritzinger, Annabelle Brown, Sarafina Maluleka and the aforementioned five finalists. All were invited to a one-day immersion at Nando’s Central Kitchen in Lorentzville, Johannesburg, on Friday 6 September 2024. ‘The HYD programme [...]

Entries are now open for the fourth compelling iteration of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search. This face-off seeks to unearth saucy new designs for Nando’s restaurants around the world, and fire up the careers of emerging local creatives. This time around, entrants have been tasked with designing a condiment unit which will display the brand’s acclaimed Peri Peri sauces. The challenge is to do so in such a way that these sauces and their piquant ingredients, which form an intrinsic part of the Nando’s experience, remain visible and accessible to customers throughout their visit. Clout/SA is a creative agency and business-to-business market-maker for South African design. The competition is sponsored by Nando’s. The end goal is to list the winning condiment unit on The Portal to Africa – Nando’s online marketplace where interior designers working on Nando’s restaurants around the world can shop for original pieces of furniture and lighting that are designed and manufactured in South Africa.
Come 28 October 2021, and for one trailblazing day only, some of South Africa’s brightest young design talents will gather at Johannesburg’s historic Constitution Hill for the Nando’s Design Conference. The conference forms part of programme for Day One of the three-day Basha Uhuru Creative Uprising Festival, and will feature a combination of workshops, talks, and an exhibition of selected furniture and lighting pieces. Joburg audiences will be privy to stunning new prototypes of pieces designed by the Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search (HYD) 2020 finalists. These pieces have come to Gauteng after having been exhibited for the very first time as part of Right Here, Right Now!. This South African art and design exhibition was held in June 2021 in Cape Town, and marked the public launch of Clout/SA. Among the inspiring pieces on show at Constitution Hill will be benches by HYD winner Katlego Tshuma, and fellow finalists Christian Botha, Siviwe Jali, Anele Vezi, as well as a server design by Sipho Twala. Twala’s innovative Gimba server was “inspired by the Swati tradition. When I was designing it, I didn’t want to go for the regular rectangular shape, like a cabinet with four legs and all that, [...]

Johannesburg’s Constitutional Hill is the new home of the strikingly designed and just-launched Flame Studios. Named for the Flame of Democracy, this world-class music recording studio opened its doors in February 2021. The interior design demonstrates stellar creative direction by Tracy Lynch of Studio Lee Lynch and the Nando’s design programme. Flame Studios is more than just a music studio – it’s a culmination of design, architecture and art. Flame Studios has a distinctive and authentic South African aesthetic. There is a decided vibrancy thanks to Lynch, who was commissioned by Nando’s, the sponsor of this new space. She conceived of the scheme and selected key pieces from local designers such as TheUrbanative, Mash. T Design Studio, Pedersen and Lennard, Dokter and Misses, Glorinah Mabaso, Siyanda Mbele, Naturalis and others. The first impression is the bold use of colour. In the rehearsal room, the corrugated wall panels and geometric ceiling panels used for soundproofing appear in a deep blue. In another room, these same blue panels find their counterparts in lush green velvet couches. In the recording booth, black, white and grey elements are offset by bold red accents. Yellow is used only once – a modern yellow server stands in front of a window [...]
