Studio 7.5’s elegant task chair, the Cosm, has taken the design world by storm since launching at Salone Del Mobile in 2018. Celebrated for its sophisticated ergonomic design, the Cosm appears to be simplicity itself, yet it took a decade of form-making, engineering and testing to achieve the support, comfort and aesthetics this revolutionary chair offers today. The Cosm has already received numerous awards – this year, it scooped the Green Product Award and the Red Dot Best of the Best Product Design Award in the ‘Office Chairs’ Now TIME magazine has named the Cosm as one of the 100 Best Inventions of 2019, among a slew of inventions that change the way we live, work, play and think about what’s possible. Nominations across a variety of categories were solicited by editors and correspondents across the globe and also online, with each contender scored for factors like originality, effectiveness and influence. The prestigious list honours innovative thinking across disciplines, with the Cosm one of only three items recognised in the Design category. What makes the Cosm so special? As the world’s first chair with an automatic tilt, thanks to its Auto-Harmonic mechanism – ‘smart’ technology situated in the gearbox below [...]

Global design manufacturer Herman Miller, Inc. has partnered with London-based design company forpeople to create the Keyn Chair Group, a range of meeting and side chairs that offer responsive movement and immediate comfort for collaborative spaces. The Keyn Chair Group builds upon Herman Miller’s depth of knowledge in workplace environments and brings the company’s specific expertise in performance seating to a new category. Stephen Perkins, Herman Miller’s Vice President, International Research, Design and Development explains: “From our research, we know that people move around on average of 53 times an hour when seated. Chairs in meeting rooms tend to be inflexible, meaning a user’s natural movement isn’t encouraged or supported. This results in people being less engaged in the meeting as they become more uncomfortable. The Keyn Chair Group is designed to respond to a user’s movement, supporting their body as they move in their seat.” Keyn provides instant-seated comfort through its sculpted one-piece shell design. Included in the design of the chair is Herman Miller’s unique CradleFlex system, which responds to shifts in posture. The back reclines smoothly up to 10 degrees, while simultaneously moving the seat forward. The Keyn Chair Group was designed by London-based design company forpeople, [...]

For a taste of New York in the Mother City, look no further than the fresh, sophisticated new offices of Urban Lime! Inhouse Brand Architects has unveiled a stylish redesign for the Cape Town branch of this international property management company. The commission was the second from Urban Lime; Inhouse previously refurbished the upper floors and common areas throughout the same building and due to the success of this initial project, was the inevitable choice to fulfil the client’s latest aspirations for the first and second floors. The client’s brief to Inhouse was to recreate the style of a luxurious New York corporate management office. It was important to steer away from the stark character of Urban Lime’s previous offices. The first floor of the Urban Lime building is dedicated to client-facing activities, and also functions as an informal meeting area. The Inhouse design team, led by Creative Director Aidan Hart and Associate Director Moiisha Visagie, introduced more luxurious elements into this area in order to reflect the importance of its function. Inhouse made the space more flexible by incorporating moveable furniture that could easily be adapted to accommodate groups of different sizes. The second floor of the building houses [...]

Global design manufacturer Herman Miller, Inc. has unveiled a new Aeron chair that is now available in South Africa exclusively through long-term local distributor All Office. The Aeron chair first launched in 1994 and was unlike any chair the world had ever seen. Instead of a padded throne, designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick did away with foam and fabric to create a true machine for sitting. Uniting human-centred design with Herman Miller’s leadership in innovative technology and materials, Aeron quickly became the best-selling and most recognisable performance chair of all time. With over 7 million sold in 134 countries, the chair is a vital tool for users around the globe and holds a rightful place in popular culture. Herman Miller’s new Aeron retains the distinctive silhouette of the iconic chair, but every component of the design has been updated to raise the bar for performance seating. With the input of original co-designer Don Chadwick, and a dedicated team of scientists, engineers, materials specialists, and researchers who worked on the project for over two years, Herman Miller has enhanced the chair by combining the latest insights in anthropometrics and ergonomics with two decades of advancement in materials, manufacturing, and technology. The [...]

Inhouse Brand Architects has constructed a sleek, masculine image for the corporate offices of the Berman Brothers Group (BBG) – a leading property development firm in Cape Town. The design concept sees raw construction materials transformed into signature elements that pay homage to BBG’s very own building blocks. When asked to design the new Sea Point offices for BBG, Inhouse Brand Architects took the bulk of its design references from the origins of BBG’s success in the building industry – its raw materials. Basic construction elements such as reinforced steel, exposed concrete and rebars have all been reimagined into iconic statements in a decidedly masculine space. The overall effect is sophisticated and startling for its design ingenuity. Extremely high-end finishes serve to contrast with and elevate raw construction elements, creating an impressive sense of cohesion. The client’s brief was to develop a world-class interior that both reflected the BBG brand and accommodated the company’s various needs. The wishlist included well-appointed private offices for the owners, Paul and Saul Berman; a large, open-plan seating area for staff; informal meeting spaces; private meeting rooms; and business lounge arrangements. For Inhouse Creative Director Aidan Hart, the project was an exciting challenge not only [...]

The Inhouse Brand Architects design team, led by Inhouse Director, Phillip Wyatt, was tasked with Project Real, a plan to redesign the national head office for Regent Insurance in Edenvale. This project followed on from a previous collaboration in 2014 in which Inhouse successfully completed a flagship fit-out for the company in Umhlanga. This involved a major rebranding exercise, the development of an upgraded corporate identity and the subsequent translation of this into a built environment. Having proved a major success, Regent was ready to extend the redesign and once again integrate their new branding into a built environment. Inhouse are specialists in this field and were brought on board to implement this change. Regent Insurance’s GM of Marketing & Corporate Affairs, Michelle Ashen-Abrahams explains, “Our mission was to provide innovative, interactive and inviting open-plan corporate offices for our staff, customers and key stakeholders. With a new corporate identity in place we wanted to bring the brand to life and looked at Inhouse to develop our 3D corporate identity. Inhouse is experienced in taking a 2D corporate identity and translating that into a 3D experience which is what we needed at Regent to complete the newly launched brand.” Prior to the redesign, the Regent head office was spread across six separate buildings with Regent [...]

Leading design agency, Inhouse Brand Architects was recently called in to re-imagine the Cape Town offices of trailblazing advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi. Having previously completed highly successful office refurbishments for other agencies like Ogilvy and 99c, the award-winning Inhouse team was a natural choice for Saatchi & Saatchi, thanks to its experience in changing the traditional structure of the professional environment for the better. Saatchi & Saatchi needed to remodel its Cape Town premises because the Saatchi & Saatchi SA group recently acquired an additional agency, BrandsRock, and as a result, the group’s Cape Town offices located at The Foundry in Green Point needed to expand. Inhouse was briefed to give the space a thorough overhaul that would convey the dynamic creativity for which the agency prides itself. Saatchi & Saatchi’s progressive ethos of “Nothing is Impossible” infused Inhouse team leader, Annelise Botes’ design concept from the start. Bright and bold colours contrast with the more sedate; irregular lines immediately lend an air of unconventionality to the space; and playful pop culture references abound. The ground floor reception area was the focus of the project, needing to instantly signal a contemporary corporate culture that welcomes dialogue and collaboration. The collaborative spirit that underlines the Saatchi & Saatchi brand is consistently referenced through the use [...]
