Adam Court, responsible for all furniture design by artisanal luxury brand OKHA, immediately fell in love with the “Verde Magnifico” marble when he saw it; the marbles visible layers of history speak to OKHA’s South African locality of cosmopolitan, polyglot and multi-cultural charm. Court conceived of Magnifico side and Magnifico coffee table together. A pair of hand-crafted tables, whose varying sizes and weights represent OKHA’s small artisanal position as well as its global expression; their irregular shape of perfect triangle and perfect square cut off at the edges are testament to the vast natural geologic surroundings of Cape Town and South Africa which inform OKHA’s design process and choice of materials. Marble is a metamorphic rock; it forms the backbone of empire and artefacts, it is created when sedimentary limestone is compressed by movement of the earth’s crust; the intense heat and pressure causing the stone’s crystals to grow and interlock forging a new and denser type of stone, marble as we know it. The Magnifico Coffee table’s Mars red “Flame Travertine” distinctly reveals the original sedimentary layers, most likely deposited by hot springs. Made from the wood of the Larch tree, a conifer dominant in the boreal forests of Siberia and Canada, the table legs are over-scaled, intentionally [...]

Realised through meticulous hand-crafting of brass and tinted glass, the Bijou is an elemental play of reflection. Designer Adam Court says “The Bijou is the result of a fascination with eroded stone and gem forms found in nature as with a piece of bespoke of jewellery. It is a play on asymmetry, reflection and the beauty of organic form.” The Bijou has two shelves or hemispheres. The top shelf is made of tinted glass, which does not fill the whole surface and gives way to “windows” either side. The effect rendered is that of diamond set in gold. This elemental and luxurious effect is further articulated by the bottom shelf made of mirror polished brass. Solid brass legs step and taper to a fine profile, the upper section brushed, the lower sections fine polished. Upon Request: Custom oxidized and patinated brass finishes available as well as optional granite or marble inserts.

Located in the leafy suburb of Higgovale, set below the iconic Table Mountain, House Invermark overlooks the city and harbour of Cape Town. Forty seven years after receiving a medal for excellence, House Invermark has been awarded a prestigious Commendation from the Cape Institute for Architecture (CIfA), in recognition of noteworthy contributions to architecture. Designed originally for himself by respected South African architect Gilbert Colyn in 1969, it was inspired by two iconic modernist houses, namely that of Phillip Johnson’s 1949 Glass House and Mies van der Rohe’s 1951 Farnsworth House. The house was purchased by architect Stefan Antoni, director at SAOTA, in 2013. By this stage it had reached a poor state of disrepair and featured numerous inappropriate alterations and additions totally out of character with the language of the building. Had it not been for Antoni’s intervention, it might have faced demolition as its heritage status as being a fine example of contemporary architecture was not recognised. SAOTA’s careful and sensitive alterations and additions have returned the threatened building back to its original state, enhanced its overall composition and significantly refined the living experience to bring it up to date with contemporary living. In the living area, kitchen, [...]

DESIGN Quintessentially Ellerman House, BAR ROC’s tailored interior has a tangible sense of distilled calm and languid luxury; here time is irrelevant, the art is sentience. The precisely articulated material palette is raw, brutal, sumptuous. Exacting design allows each finish to express itself with clarity and integrity, revealing and accentuating the linear, rigorous elegance of the space. BAR ROC emits an evocative lustre truly in keeping with the attitude and resonance of Ellerman House. A relaxed, contemporary space for friends to gather at the end of the day and chat about the incredible adventure they find themselves on. A space for the classic raconteur to wax lyrical about his or her African escapades. A space to say goodnight to another glorious day while watching the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean. This is BAR ROC. ELLERMAN HOUSE Ellerman House is the ultimate urban retreat for discerning luxury travellers wanting complete exclusivity and privacy in Cape Town. Located in Bantry Bay, it offers spectacular Atlantic Ocean views against the dramatic backdrop of Lion’s Head. Clifton’s beaches are within walking distance, while the best local attractions are a 10-minute drive away. The historic Cape Edwardian-style mansion has 11 rooms and 2 suites, [...]
