The opening evening forms part of First Thursdays and all are welcome to attend. For more information please see http://www.barrysalzman.net/ and www.deepestdarkestart.com.
South African artists Karen Stewart and Ed Suter were among the 38 selected artists chosen from 350 applications received for the second iteration of the Lagos Biennial entitled: “How to Build a Lagoon with Just a Bottle of Wine?” The Lagos Biennial 2 was touted by the New York Times as one of two international Biennials worth travelling for. The title was adapted from the poem, “A Song For Lagos” by the Nigerian writer Akeem Lasisi. The curators framed the title as a provocation for artists and the public to meditate on the history and present construction of a city’s built environment. According to the curators, the title conjures the impossible, and speaks to the city’s “can-do” spirit in the face of seemingly insurmountable social, political, and economic obstacles. The curatorial panel consists of Antawan I. Byrd, Tosin Oshinowo and Oyinda Fakeye whom come from diverse art backgrounds and have made significant contributions to the popularity and rise of contemporary African art internationally. The forthcoming biennial will take the city of Lagos as its epicenter and point of departure for a broader investigation on how contemporary artists, designers, and other creatives are responding to the challenges and possibilities of environments [...]

Barry Salzman is an award-winning contemporary artist who currently works in photography, video and mixed media. His projects have been shown across the globe and his work widely published. He is the recipient of the 2018 International Photographer of the Year award in the Deeper Perspective category of the International Photography Awards (IPA), for a project entitled The Day I Became Another Genocide Victim that addresses the Rwandan genocide. Salzman’s latest exhibition The Other Side of Christmas will be shown at Deepest Darkest art gallery in Cape Town, South Africa from 7 November to 28 December 2019. This substantial body of work documents everyday scenes across the American South between the 2014 USA mid-term elections, the precursor to the divisive 2016 Presidential elections, and Christmas. It is Salzman’s personal exploration of what it means to be ‘American’. “The work is a critique of the American Dream. It’s my personal analysis of what I saw and experienced, but is in no way intended to present a factually comprehensive analysis. However, the American Dream was predicated on a certain ethos – democracy, liberty, equality, opportunity. In order for its historical notion to prevail, you need a sense of economic prosperity and upward [...]

STEVENSON is pleased to present Zanele Muholi’s new exhibition of photographs. In contrast to her life-long project of documenting members of her community, one in which she normally has the privilege of witnessing her subjects presentation of themselves according to their own self-image, with this new work she turns her camera on herself. This exhibition will be a presentation of new self-portraits of Zanele Muholi. Experimenting with different characters, Muholi portrays herself in a highly stylised and performative language that references the history of black and white fashion photography. During an exchange with Agustina Zegers of DIS Magazine (12 May 2015), on whether photography can help personal development in stages of transformation, Muholi states: “There are parts of us that we don’t want to confront. There’s a me that I might not be connected with, and there comes a point where self-loving is key. There are people who just don’t see how images could help them heal. I treat photography as a way of healing because I have to love myself. Nobody will do that job for me. There are insecurities that we deal with, moments where I look at the image of myself and ask myself “who is this?” [...]
