(Stellenbosch, South Africa) – Spier is honoured to announce that its 21 Gables Pinotage 2018 has been named one of South Africa’s top ten at the 2023 Absa Top 10 Pinotage competition. This annual event, hosted by the Pinotage Association, seeks to spotlight the crème de la crème of Pinotage wines, underscoring the immense potential and versatility of South Africa’s signature grape variety. Grown in ancient Stellenbosch mountain soils overlooking the south side of False Bay, the 15-year-old vines used in making the 21 Gables Pinotage benefit from cooling summer breezes.
The Spring Pairing at Spier’s Tasting Room celebrates the new season with four wines paired with an elegant array of canapés. Available from 1 September, each of these tasty treats are made from seasonal ingredients sourced from the Spier farm as well as other nearby, ethical producers: The apple notes and brioche hints of the opulently dry Spier Méthode Cap Classique is paired with a marinated cucumber ribbon stuffed with cream cheese and spring herbs and topped with sourdough crumbs and green oil. The crisp yet fruity Spier Signature Chardonnay/Pinot Noir is matched with a skewer featuring basil and mint-compressed melon, prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella cheese balls. The berry-rich and supple Spier Signature Pinotage is paired with roast purple baby beet, pickled blackberry, goat cheese and black pepper. Lastly, the suavely serious Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc’s gooseberry and fresh asparagus notes perfectly complement mature Gruberg cheese, custard and candied walnut. The Spring Pairing costs just R120 per person and is exclusively available at the Spier Tasting Room from 1 September until 30 November 2019. For more information or to make a booking, please visit www.spier.co.za or contact 021 809 1100

The International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2017 awarded the Spier 21 Gables Pinotage 2014 with a “Gold Outstanding” medal score of 93+ at the 48th annual IWSC awards ceremony, which was held in London in September 2017. In addition, Spier proudly walked away with awards for seven other wines in the 2017 IWSC. Spier’s wines were judged against those from nearly 90 countries, with more than 400 international experts evaluating the wines over a period of seven months, making Spier’s achievement in the IWSC extremely significant. The Spier 21 Gables Pinotage 2014 is richly textured, tannic and brooding, its palate exuding black fruits, dark chocolate, baked herbs and meaty spice. Tautly strung yet fine tannins are evident, offering a luxurious and velvety texture. Expect this wine to peak around 2022 with the ability to keep longer. The Spier 21 Gables Pinotage 2014 also won Double Gold at the 2017 Top 100 SA Wines, Double Gold at the 2016 Veritas Awards and earned 4.5 stars in the 2017 edition of Platter’s Wine Guide. Again on the international front, renowned journalist and Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, has released his much-anticipated fifth annual South African 2017 Special Report, and has rated [...]
