At a gala event held at UJ Gallery on 11 April 2019, emerging Eastern Cape artist Sonwabiso Ngcai was announced as overall winner of 2019 PPC Imaginarium Awards, taking home R150 000 in cash for his sculpture entitled Isigu, or The Snare. A BASA Award-winning programme, the PPC Imaginarium Awards is the country’s most supportive art and design competition with over half-a-million Rand in prizes awarded across six categories – Sculpture, Industrial Design, Film, Fashion, Jewellery and Architecture – to standout entries that express innovation using PPC cement. Ngcai secured both the Sculpture Category prize and the Overall Winner ranking for a thought-provoking entry, which provides an analogy for how certain religious cults are ensnaring their congregants. According to the artist’s personal views on the subject matter: “an isigu, in traditional African society, is a contraption used by young boys to hunt birds. It consists of a downward-facing bowl, with one side held open by an upright stick that has a string tied to it, with a few pieces of grain scattered underneath the bowl. Lured by the promise of food, a bird enters the area – the string is tugged, and the bird is captured. In this piece, the use [...]

Art and design competitions are legitimised as much by the entry talent they attract as by the calibre of the judges weighing in on the winners. The annual PPC Imaginarium Awards, now in its 5 th year, boasts both a plethora of young creatives competing for the country’s most supportive art and design prize and a truly stellar judging panel. The panel comprises industry leaders drawn from across the various entry categories, namely, Fashion, Film, Architecture, Industrial Design, Sculpture and Jewellery. Last year, the PPC Imaginarium Awards judges were tasked with evaluating over 300 completed submissions. For 2019 the formidable task of judging the flood of entries falls to an illustrious panel comprising high-profile personalities, who evaluate submissions at a regional and then national level. The six regional judges who, together with competition director Daniel van der Merwe, will select this year’s finalists, are: Pierre Lombard (Johannesburg), Mary Sibande (Johannesburg), Jay Pather (Cape Town), Jessica Staple (Port Elizabeth), Avitha Sooful (Pretoria), Themba Shibase (KZN), Sisanda Henna (Johannesburg) and Adelheid von Maltitz (Bloemfontein). The judges will be looking for entries that express innovation through the medium of concrete. In doing so, they will bring their formidable experience and expertise to bear when choosing the strongest entries. Sibanda, for example, is one of the country’s [...]

Local beekeeping is currently faced with a range of challenges, including adverse weather conditions and the rapid decline in bee numbers worldwide – which is a global concern seeing as bees pollinate crops that are produced for human consumption. The cheap price of low-quality imported honey is also a threat to South African honey farmers. However, a new type of beehive has the potential to revitalise honey production in this country. The concept sees traditional wooden hive structures replaced with an innovative concrete frame. Although a concrete hive is not in itself a new idea, the new Beegin hive provides several design adjustments that have helped a test group of beekeepers to increase their productivity. The progressive, aptly named Beegin was created by Ivan Brown and was born out of this intrepid industrial design student’s goal to expand local beekeeping and contribute to both job creation and food security in this country. Brown is currently studying for a master’s degree at the University of Johannesburg. His work on Beegin, which started as a research project, has been featured at several international design conferences. He has also co-authored several research papers. Brown came up with the design when he entered the [...]

The PPC Imaginarium Awards champions local art and design and staked its claim with the 21st Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) Awards, partnered by Hollard Group. BASA’s 2018 finalists were announced at a breakfast at Hollard Group’s Villa Arcadia head office campus in Parktown, Johannesburg, on Tuesday, 28 August 2018, and PPC Ltd was named for the Beyond Borders Partnership Award and the Cultural Tourism Award (supported by Nedbank). The annual BASA Awards recognise and reward members of the business sector who contribute to the arts across all genres; these include businesses in the financial, construction, tourism & hospitality, professional services, media & publishing, property, broadcast, information technology and education sectors. “BASA-facilitated partnerships further independent, reflective and critical social commentary,” says BASA CEO Michelle Constant. “This keeps our nation growing and moving forward. It also drives economic growth that, in turn, benefits everybody.” For its efforts in supporting and uplifting local artists, PPC Ltd was named as a finalist for two BASA Awards – the Beyond Borders Partnership Award and the Cultural Tourism Award. In May 2018, PPC Ltd partnered with the National Gallery of Zimbabwe to co-host the first-ever PPC Imaginarium Awards Zimbabwe gala event. For this venture, [...]
