As our cities evolve in response to global urbanization and climate change, urban developments need to be sustainable, adaptive, diverse and resilient to meet the demands of market creation, resource consumption, and spatial equality and efficiencies. Under the theme ‘WeTheCity: Memory & Resilience’, the #AZA18 programme will focus on different scenarios of change as to how we live, interact, and survive both as individuals and as part of a collective, within the urban environment. Enrique Browne Three of the prominent and award-winning speakers who will be sharing their experiences at #AZA18 are Chilean architect, Enrique Browne; Mexico’s Gabriela Carrillo; and Mumbai-based Sameep Padora. Gabriela Carrillo Hailed as ‘Architect of the Year’ in the 2017 Women in Architecture Awards by The Architectural Review and the Architects’ Journal, Gabriela Carrillo is co-director of the multi-award-winning practice Taller de Arquitectura Mauricio Rocha + Gabriela Carrillo. Using every project as an opportunity to develop her thoughts on space, light and shadow, perspective, warmth and atmosphere, Carrillo intends to share with the #AZA18 audience, the strategies that she has developed while working in a place always in crisis, together with the opportunities that these scenarios can afford.
South Africa’s most supportive contest for emerging creatives, The PPC Imaginarium Awards, will be hosting a pop-up show with its Eastern Cape finalists at the artEC Community Art Centre in Port Elizabeth. The exhibition is open to the public and will run from 6-8 March 2018. The show features a range of artworks that have been entered into the annual PPC Imaginarium Awards in the categories of fashion, sculpture, jewellery and industrial design. In keeping with its ethos of exposure and representation, artEC continues to include open shows in its annual exhibition calendar to provide opportunities for unestablished artists. Their ethos aligns with The PPC Imaginarium’s vision in its attempt to nurture, promote and establish young artists and designers as leaders in their respective fields. First launched by the innovation department of the renowned cement company PPC Ltd, the PPC Imaginarium is an art-and-design competition that challenges emerging artists and designers to demonstrate their knack for innovation by incorporating concrete into their respective disciplines. Now in its fourth year, the PPC Imaginarium has established itself firmly as South Africa’s top career-launching platform for up-and-coming artists and designers. With a cash prize totaling R500 000, entrants of the 2018 PPC Imaginarium Awards [...]

‘Concrete’ and ‘innovation’ are two words which are seldom used in the same sentence. Many consider concrete to be a material that cannot advance further in its use. But this is not the case at all. There remain myths around concrete and its limitations, but with technology advancing at such a rapid pace, innovation in concrete may become a commonplace occurrence. At this point in time, however, concrete innovation is still a tremendously stimulating and relatively new field. The latest trends in concrete bear witness not just to the unlimited application of design thinking, but also to the flexibility of concrete itself – especially when combined with other materials. “Cement Gardening”, a popular trend in concrete innovation, is known for ‘greener’ living in urban gardening and is built around the idea of plants growing in cement. It is exciting as it is a successful way in which to create a vertical garden and living wall. Cement gardens capture rainwater, and the multi-layered cement encourages and sustains the growth of specific mosses and lichens directly onto the cement material. Another forward-thinking trend in concrete innovation is known as “Translucent Concrete” – a fibre-reinforced concrete which is used for aesthetic and [...]
