Gourmet burgers, deboned half-chicken, beer-battered hake, and wild mushroom and roasted butternut gnocchi are some of the fresh menu delights that await lunchtime guests at The Hussar Grill.
Spring is in the air and the warming weather often calls for lighter meals. Look to The Hussar Grill’s Halloumi Salad, one of the restaurant’s delicious vegetarian menu options, for a quick and easy stand-alone fix. Alternatively, serve this salad as a tasty course as part of a lengthy weekend feast. The crispy halloumi with a creamy, melty centre adds a rich and hearty counterpart to an assemblage of roasted vegetables and French-style sautéed green beans. We suggest trying it at your local Hussar Grill first to get the inside track for your home preparation. Ingredients: 150g Halloumi cheese, sliced into 4 pieces 1 tsp Butter 75g Blanched green beans 8 Cherry tomatoes, halved 120g Roasted vegetables, prepared in advance 1 Pinch salt & pepper Crispy onions to taste Balsamic reduction to taste Method: Sauté the green beans with tomatoes in a small amount of butter with a pinch of salt and pepper. Place the beans and tomatoes in your salad bowl. Top with the roasted vegetables. A few minutes before you’re ready to serve the salad, shallow fry the halloumi cheese until golden brown on either side. Then add the halloumi to the bowl. Sprinkle crispy onions and balsamic [...]

Hermanus is spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out – as you might expect from a popular holiday destination. A plethora of watering holes, takeaways, concessions and sea-view restaurants hug the clifftop above the old harbour. There’s a restaurant in pretty much every direction you look – and unlike the elusiveness and wonder of whale-spotting, here you are at least guaranteed sight of a waitron without it being a total fluke. While there is a host of refreshment stations, many of these are merely middle of the road franchises that simply find themselves opportunistically located in Hermanus. And there’s nothing wrong with that at all. It’s certainly convenient for a wide range of palates and pockets. But if you’re looking for a restaurant that is special, for a place that speaks to the region, and to the people who love living there, that is of its context and that is above the ordinary; then look to options such as Bientang’s Cave (which offers seafood in a converted cave above the waves), or Dutchies beach restaurant on Grotto Beach. Look to Origins at The Marine. Although The Marine is part of The Liz McGrath Collection, the hotel is open [...]

We were recently treated to a sumptuous High Tea at The Cellars-Hohenort that fulfilled every secret cream bun and finger sandwich fantasy we may have been harbouring. After emitting no small sigh of delight and sinking down into an oversized couch in front of a roaring fireplace, we were promptly offered a choice of bubbly, coffee or tea. Bubbly is indeed a decadent way to start the afternoon’s proceedings! But tea is obviously the appropriate default option and is selected from a range of menu options featuring classics and contemporary tea blends. The selection is so wide it is almost indecision-inducing. But what’s the rush? Take the time to decide what to imbibe. It’s High Tea, after all. The experience needn’t be fast-tracked. While fastening on your choice of beverage, savour the hotel’s tastefully traditional décor with a contemporary twist that enlivens the historic bones of a building that dates back to the time of Simon van der Stel. There are fresh flowers in stately floral arrangements on the interior and views onto the award-winning gardens that surround the hotel. The wait staff are attentive in their administrations and the atmosphere is warm and accessible yet exudes an air of [...]

The long-awaited Open Door restaurant at Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate has finally launched to the delight of diners in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs and beyond. Introducing some of the contemporary edginess for which they are well known, local restaurateurs Neil Grant and Barry Engelbrecht have transformed the space formerly occupied by The River Café – situated at the entrance to the estate – into an exciting destination dining spot. Grant and Engelbrecht, who also own the successful Cape Town eateries Bocca and Burrata, are known for their award-winning, modern take on Italian cuisine, presented in surroundings that make use of innovative design combined with an awareness of detail and the incorporation of traditional elements. Inhouse Brand Architects has successfully worked with the duo in the past and created the interiors for both Bocca and Burrata. The challenge this time was different, though – a far larger dining area, the introduction of a new culinary style as well as the logistics of dealing with a building that is a local heritage site. The heritage of the building was an important factor when shaping the new look of the restaurant. Originally built between 1917 and 1918 as a primary school for children [...]
