Owing their reputation to the historical reverence of the Bordeaux region of France (the largest fine-wine producing region on earth), Bordeaux Blends traditionally combine several ‘noble’ grape varieties native to the region, most notably Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. While they may not originate from the famous region itself, versions of these blends are made all over the world, earning the name ‘Bordeaux-style’ Blends and dominating the market. ‘Are we simply schooled into assuming Bordeaux Blends are better, or are they really better than other blends?’ is the pointed question posed by Cape Wine Master and Vinimark’s Wine Education and Training Manager, Ginette de Fleuriot, playing devil’s advocate. Bordeaux Blends made in South Africa are celebrated for their adherence to traditional viticulture, featuring the prominent varietals such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that are known for their structured sophistication and ageing potential.
CHEERS TO THE NEW YEAR WITH SPIER’S NEW RANGE OF CHOCOLATE FLAVOURS FOR THEIR CHOCOLATE & WINE TASTING Stellenbosch – Spier’s Chocolate & Wine Tasting was one of the winelands very first wine and food pairing innovations, and is still one of its most popular. This season, Spier introduces a delectable new offering, ideal for anyone looking to refine their pairing palate a little further—or simply seeking a bit of indulgence. In collaboration with the renowned local chocolatier Von Geusau, Spier has created three handmade chocolates that perfectly complement and accentuate the subtle flavours of each award-winning Creative Block wine. Your tasting journey is presented in a handcrafted chocolate box, served alongside a trio of Creative Block wines – each excellently paired with speciality chocolate – and complemented by the palate cleansing and refreshing Cap Classique Brut. The Creative Block wines are named after the art project that provides a platform for both emerging and seasoned artists, launched in 2004. The resulting ‘Creative Blocks’ adorn the Spier Tasting Room and are available for sale, providing a valuable platform for exposure and income. This initiative harmoniously aligns with the Creative Block wines, which are a collection of Rhône- and Bordeaux-inspired blends. Mirroring the collaborative spirit of the art project, Spier’s winemakers craft these wines [...]
