The Rug Company has collaborated with celebrated British designer Christopher Kane to create an inaugural collection of five handcrafted rugs and one cushion Since its inception in 2006, Christopher Kane’s eponymous label has become renowned worldwide for its ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary with its highly creative and playful house signatures of constant innovation, rebellious femininity and extraordinary skill. Combining multiple inspirations from past collections, Kane’s designs for The Rug Company reflect his immediately recognisable style. Christopher KanePhoto credit: Sophie Harris Photography Inspired by botanical illustrations and his interest in biology, Kane’s Botanical Anatomy cushion depicts an intersection of a carnation, reminiscent of the scientific flower diagrams used in school textbooks. The iconic floral motif, previously emblazoned onto sweatshirts, is finely handwoven from silk yarns and iridescent metallic threads on a matte wool background. The Botanical Anatomy rug takes inspiration from the same collection. Kane subverts and amplifies the traditional floral motif, which is repeated and inverted to create a highly decorative, statement design. Handcrafted from a combination of rich silk yarns and Tibetan wool, the Botanical Anatomy rug is available in two colourways; a dusky blush and soft smoky grey. Rich in dimension and texture, the [...]

Acclaimed interior designer Sandra Nunnerley, known for her high-end residential and commercial projects, debuts her inaugural collection with The Rug Company. Her new designs juxtapose contemporary and traditional design and include subtle details which meld form and function. Elegant and architectural, Madison and Gramercy are inspired by Manhattan’s angularity and cosmopolitan point of view celebrating the city Nunnerley calls home. The designer’s thoughtful approach to composition allows for maximum versatility, whether the rugs are used in the city or countryside. Every rug is entirely handmade by The Rug Company’s Nepalese weavers, applying ancient techniques passed down through many generations. Using silk and wool, each handknotted rug is available in various sizes and is customisable.

The Rug Company will unveil its latest collaboration with award-winning German Designer Sebastian Herkner in Autumn 2018. Known for his outstanding talent as a product designer, Herkner is continually innovating with new avant-garde creations and famously combines new technologies with traditional craftsmanship to design contemporary furniture and objects. The collection includes two designs: Mainland Light and Mainland Dark. The designs feature quadrilateral layers and structures which are inspired by the connections, junctions, overlaps, transits and free spaces within a city. Using a combination of handknotted silk and Tibetan wool, both designs feature four intersecting, intriguing textures in a range of pile heights, giving the rugs a three-dimensional effect. Herkner says: “There is a sensitivity and clear identity to my collection. I was inspired by cityscapes and transported characteristics from various contexts to create these dramatic and unique designs.” Herkner’s passion and respect for traditional materials and craftsmanship resonate in the creation of both designs which have been handknotted in Nepal by highly-skilled craftsmen using the most traditional weaving techniques for which The Rug Company is renowned. Both rugs will be available in various sizes from The Rug Company’s showrooms , prices start from R44 420 (1.83m x 1.22m)

Renowned architect and long-standing collaborator with The Rug Company,David Rockwell has added three new designs to his collection of bold and contemporary rug designs. Moonlight Tidal,Lola and Misty represent a synergy of design and craft, the subdued, yet enigmatic designs accentuate the architect’s passion for nature, from which Rockwell draws much of his inspiration. Moonlight Tidal is a new take on the original Tidal rug.Handcrafted in bamboo silk.its painterly and rich expression of natural light represent a shimmering reflection across the surface of a bay, renderedin cool andwarmgreys. Misty, also uses bamboo silk to depict a deep.rich indigo blue ombre motif that fades to white at its edges.Reminiscent of a watercolour brush stroke, the silky ink pile shimmers as thelight hits the threads. Lola was inspired by the glazed ceramic vessels that David and his daughter Lola decoratedin the studio of Montreal ceramic artist Pascale Girardin.Girardin used this same brushstroke approach to create hand-thrown sake vessels for Rockwell Group’s new Nobu Downtown restaurantin Lower Manhattan. The abstract rug composition expresses the same spontaneous movement and flow of brushstrokes that appear on the vessels. Every one of our rugs is entirely handmade by The Rug Company’s Nepalese weavers.applying ancient techniques passed down through many [...]
