Woven Forms, an exhibition of limited-edition handmade rugs created by some of the world’s most interesting designers, will be shown in South Africa for the first time at Southern Guild in Cape Town’s Silo District from 20 September until the end of 2018. The rug collection – a collaboration between New York gallery R & Company and Milan-based carpet producer Amini – was presented to the public for the first time at the 57th Venice Biennale in May 2017. Woven Forms presents unique designs by Wendell Castle, Rogan Gregory, Dana Barnes, the Haas Brothers, Katie Stout, David Wiseman and Renate Müller, among others. Working within the rich history of carpet making in India and Nepal, the countries where the carpets are handmade, the exhibition reexamines the limits of craft and industry by offering the designers the opportunity to explore their ideas through textiles. The project breaks the longstanding tradition of artists making carpets by printing a pre-existing painting, drawing, or photograph on a rug. Instead, each artist has created a unique design that considers the form, material and process while simultaneously reflecting their individual styles. All works are limited-edition pieces that took roughly six months to produce. Evan Snyderman, co-founder of [...]

The Rug Company has collaborated with celebrated British designer Christopher Kane to create an inaugural collection of five handcrafted rugs and one cushion Since its inception in 2006, Christopher Kane’s eponymous label has become renowned worldwide for its ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary with its highly creative and playful house signatures of constant innovation, rebellious femininity and extraordinary skill. Combining multiple inspirations from past collections, Kane’s designs for The Rug Company reflect his immediately recognisable style. Christopher KanePhoto credit: Sophie Harris Photography Inspired by botanical illustrations and his interest in biology, Kane’s Botanical Anatomy cushion depicts an intersection of a carnation, reminiscent of the scientific flower diagrams used in school textbooks. The iconic floral motif, previously emblazoned onto sweatshirts, is finely handwoven from silk yarns and iridescent metallic threads on a matte wool background. The Botanical Anatomy rug takes inspiration from the same collection. Kane subverts and amplifies the traditional floral motif, which is repeated and inverted to create a highly decorative, statement design. Handcrafted from a combination of rich silk yarns and Tibetan wool, the Botanical Anatomy rug is available in two colourways; a dusky blush and soft smoky grey. Rich in dimension and texture, the [...]

From plain textures to abstract ikats and modern geometrics, the new additions feature an array of unique designs to suit all tastes. Embracing simplicity over intricacy, the Studio Collection is home to an array of light and bright pieces at lower price points.
Kelly Wearstler who is best known for her distinctive, sophisticated and luxurious designs, offers some insight into the inspirations behind her recently launched rug collection with The Rug Company. Where do you find your design inspiration? Fashion, art, architecture, Mother Nature. Inspiration is everywhere. The first place I go when I want to get inspired is my library at home – it houses over 2,000 books on everything from fashion and jewellery design to landscape architecture. I collect vintage and out of print titles. What was your first design project? A residential project. I started out with one client. I was referred by a friend and hired to design one room in their home and slowly grew my business through word of mouth. It was 1995 when I founded my studio. My first hotel project was The Avalon, a boutique hotel in Beverly Hills. Tell us about your new designs for The Rug Company. My rug designs are a mixology of classic and modern, from patterns found in nature – the striations of a shoreline, the natural veining of marble – to architectural and graphic art. My new designs are hand-painted art pieces done in my studio. How do you [...]

New York based interior designer Nicole Fuller brings her uncompromising eye for high quality design to The Rug Company with her new Farrah rugs. The large scale sinuous motif of the Farrah design is depicted in hand spun silk against a wool background, lending it a shimmering movement. Available from stock in two colourways, Grey and Ruby, the Farrah has a transitional aesthetic that makes it equally at home in a modern or traditional interior. Nicole says of her design, “Farrah was inspired by the bold 60’s inspired graffiti printed fashion collections of Stephen Spouse. The lines move in an organic way and the bold scale is juxtaposed with the simplicity of a pared down colour palette.” The Farrah design is entirely handmade by The Rug Company’s weavers in Nepal using the finest hand spun Tibetan wool and silk yarns. It can be custom ordered in size shape or colour to suit specific requirements.
Deftly mixing decorative styles and historical eras, Spanish designer Lorenzo Castillo is loved for his individual style that merges the past and the present. His new collection for The Rug Company exemplifies this skill; the rugs take their inspiration from classical references, but are given a contemporary identity with Lorenzo’s innovative decorative style. Segovia Segovia is inspired by a 15th Century Spanish house called ‘Casa de los Picos’, whose distinctive facade of granite blocks carved into pyramid shaped reliefs has been interpreted into the single plane of a rug. The colour composition of blue, grey and white gives the design depth and a contemporary feel. Segovia Isabella continues this theme; inspired by the Renaissance architecture in Florence, in particular the facade of the Palazzo Strozzi, the rug features layers of cut stone. The optical illusion of the design is achieved through Castillo’s colour palette of muted red and grey. Isabella Isabella Escorial echoes the beautiful patterns of 16th Century marble floors found in the Spanish tradition, in a Mediterranean colour palette of ochre yellow and soft greys. The optical hexagons of Graphene is reminiscent of the crystalline structure of its namesake, its angles softened by the pale yellow and grey tones. [...]

The Rug Company has added four new Bamboo Silk rugs to its own collection. The rugs are hand knotted using fibre drawn from the bamboo plant, which has an appearance very similar to silk, resulting in their beautiful lustre. The neutral colourways are elevated to elegant metallics with the natural sheen from the bamboo silk. The luxurious and versatile tones to choose between are Bronze, Graphite, Pale, Gold and Silver. A chunkier knot coupled with the usage of bamboo silk gives these superb silken rugs a surprising affordability at just price band 2. The collection is available from stock in The Rug Company’s Cape Town showroom and worldwide, and can also be custom ordered to fit specific dimensions.

This collection explores a traditional embroidery technique which has been loved for centuries, hand stitched crewelwork. One of the earliest forms of decorative surface stitching, crewelwork is a type of crochet embroidery which lends itself to organic shapes and sinuous designs. The chain stitch creates subtle movement, which imbues any design with a fluidity and lightness. The collection comprises two designs by Suzanne Sharp, Cypress and India, and two designs by Allegra Hicks, Atlantis and Reflections. Suzanne Sharp has designed two classics inspired by her love of travelling and Mediterranean heritage. The diagonal geometric repeat is used to interlock more organic forms, which are brought to life by the superior way in which crewelwork can render curved shapes. Allegra’s designs began as water colours, exploring the beauty of water movement and stillness. Atlantis is the movement: either a gentle rippling or wild ocean waves. Reflections is the stillness: glittering shards of light that reflect from a frozen lake surface. These crewelwork rugs are hand woven by skilled artisans using the finest wool yarns. They are highly decorative and easy to use and are available from stock in a range of sizes.
