Accessed from Kloof Road, which winds along the western slopes of Lion’s Head, this site is positioned in the wind-protected suburb of Clifton. Years before any development was introduced, this slope was conceivably covered by indigenous forest and fynbos. Today, however, the area is developed and enjoys spectacular views over the sandy beaches, boulder outcrops, and Twelve Apostles mountains towards the south and sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean. The first aspect of the project that required addressing was the steep slope that would have to be excavated to accommodate the structure. The home was conceived as an arrangement of staggered blocks that rise along the side of the mountain, with the upper, private levels becoming appropriately shielded from both visibility and street-level noise. ‘The conceptual approach to the design was to reinstate the qualities of a natural landscape,’ says architect Phillippe Fouché of South African architectural firm SAOTA, who lead the project. The lower part of the building, an independent apartment, is then expressed as ‘a heavy stone plinth’, its gabion-walled exterior and cocooning interior of dark-stained oak and off shutter concrete reflecting the strata of the mountainside out of which they emerge. On top of this is a transitional space that is expressed [...]

The winners of the architectural competition for the new Neuländer Quarree precinct in Hamburg have been announced. The jury awarded SAOTA – an architecture and design firm from Cape Town, South Africa, BeL Architecture from Cologne and ROBERTNEUN Architects from Berlin. The brief was to provide design concepts for five components of a site of approximately 44 000 m² set within the formerly industrial context of Harburg inland port in Hamburg, Germany. The project developer CG Gruppe AG sought outstanding designs that were architecturally, functionally, ecologically and economically mature and aimed at promoting long-term commitment to future residents and users. SAOTA were announced as winners of the Residential Apartment building A1, a mixed-use building including rental apartments, restaurants and retail. The jury commented that “SAOTA’s design stood out for its abundance of ideas, its strong interior and exterior reference and orientation to the water.” “Our approach begins with creating an active streetscape providing rich interactions between the architecture and the site for residents and visitors alike. Combined with an architecture which is dynamic and clearly rooted in the historic context – SAOTA’s design will contribute to the architectural quality and the long-term success and desirability of the development,” Christoph Gröner, CEO [...]

International architecture firm SAOTA opens LIFE SPACE LIFE in Zurich, Switzerland this month. More than just a showcase of the award-winning firm’s work, the exhibition explores the synthesis of these core ideas within the work that has established SAOTA as an integral part of the global architectural landscape. LIGHT. The energy that is crucial to human life is also the force that renders form, allowing the observer to perceive colour, texture and space. SPACE. The manipulation of space and the definition of the sequence in which it is experienced has always been one of the architect’s primary tools. SAOTA’s architecture blends and shares space, blurring the division between elements; be it internal or external, sometimes extending to the horizon, or to the sky, to create buildings that invite a powerfully emotive response. LIFE. SAOTA creates architecture that understands human needs extend beyond just the requirement for shelter. They are stages for entertaining, for sharing, for rest, for families and for contemplation. LIGHT SPACE LIFE offers a view into the thinking of an architectural practice that is relentlessly questioning the sense of and what it means to live today. About SAOTA SAOTA, a leading firm of architects, is driven by the [...]

Set on the slopes of Mosman, Sydney, this bold and modern home maximises dramatic views and capitalises on the great climate and indoor-outdoor lifestyle in Australia. Designed by award-winning architecture company SAOTA, this home has been created as a primary home for a young Sydney family. With an international footprint in more than 86 countries, it is SAOTA’s first completed project in Australia. SAOTA teamed with highly respected Sydney-based, TKD Architects to bring the project to life. TKD brings together experts in contemporary architecture and interior design. “As Executive Architects, TKD worked closely with the client, ensuring that SAOTA’s detailed design was delivered and a dream home realized. Their creativity and commitment to design excellence was a key success factor,” comments SAOTA Junior Associate, Erin Gibbs. For interior decorating, design studio Alexandra Kidd Design succeeded in creating sophisticated spaces within the home. The style of the home is strong yet classic and inherently sophisticated. Entering the home, the drama is emphasised by a double volume entrance space with open Eastern views right through the house to Sydney Harbour and beyond. What makes this home unique in the area is its position on two adjacent sites, allowing generously proportioned open living [...]

Luxury island experience in the heart of Miami The setting for this Miami house is on a pie shaped lot on the southern tip of Dilido Island with superb views of the islands, downtown and South Beach. The SAOTA-designed house spills out onto the longer, waterfront elevation and draws on the jet-set lifestyle of Biscayne Bay, to evoke the experience of being on the deck of a super yacht. Multiple events unfold on this versatile terrace whose defining characteristic – the harmonious merging of internal and external living spaces – is a theme carried throughout the house. Entrance from the street, via the Venetian Causeway, is more restrained; lush planting skirts a generous in-out driveway, and a series of wall planes and volumes, held together by a curved screen of etched glass, signal a grand, double-volume entrance hall. Once inside, the splayed nature of the site becomes apparent as masses of programme pull apart to form a dramatic canyon whose volume frames the view out into the bay. This central void is animated with deliberately sculptural elements and artworks – including a bold spiral staircase, and a series of bronze screens which hang from the ceiling to create a double height [...]

Layered views and blurring edges Open plan living and the ability to live in and through your home has inspired this transparent and easy-living family home. Set between the Indian Creek Canal and Pine Tree Drive in Miami’s historic Collin’s Waterfront district, the SAOTA-designed space is expansive and fluid – opening up to the activity of the canal when desired, or contained when privacy is needed. Set on a strongly linear proportioned site, the building is porous, bringing the landscape and water bodies into the interior of the house to create a greater sense of space. Through the introduction of a number of introverted and extroverted courtyards, the house boasts views to the outside in two directions. These views are visible from almost any point in the house, creating a tangible and immediate relationship to the outdoors. “The design is as much about containment as it is about the views through the many living spaces, towards the Atlantic Ocean and world-renowned Miami Beach,” says SAOTA director, Philip Olmesdahl. “While the overall contemporary architectural design is a key focus of the SAOTA design team, the use and connectivity of the spaces is the primary driver – how the house lives.” The [...]

A youthful yet sophisticated contemporary family dwelling on the Sydney Harbour shore Set in a north-facing cove in Sydney’s vast natural harbour, the site borders a recreational park and a public pier which juts out into the bay. This element forms one axis for the site whilst a pristine beach, directly in front of the site, forms another. From the principle park elevation that the new building appears as a collection of planes; a play on space, privacy and threshold. Graphite grey sail screens (made from “Kaynemaile,” a polycarbonate chainmail developed in New Zealand for the Lord of the Rings movies) are rigged just off the house providing privacy from the road. Timber cladding, plastered mass walls, a wood-clad soffit and the exaggerated cill of a bay window punched through the sail screens, are layered into further planes. This game creates depth in an otherwise linear façade and provides privacy whilst maximising light and views to the park. Set into this façade the stairwell is fully glazed; but wrapped protectively in a cloak of timber louvres. This gently curved outline contrasts with the surrounding crystalline box and mediates between the formal entrance and bedrooms above. Entry is at 90 degrees [...]
